The Tiffen 52mm Warm Black Pro-Mist Filterhelps to reduce the value of the highlights while slightly lowering the overall contrast. This filter is especially useful for smoothing out and softening facial wrinkles and other blemishes. While designed for use with movies, this filter can also be used for fashion and beauty applications. Unlike a traditional diffusion or soft focus filter, Pro-Mist filters provide little loss of detail across the image. The 1 density provides a subtle amount of contrast and highlight reduction and allows for a soft, pastel-like quality of light.

This filter also combines the diffusion effect with an 812 warming filter for providing a general warmth to the image and for improving skin tones. This warming effect also helps to reduce blue sensitivity and for cutting through overly cool tones within the scene.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the filter front-threaded to allow lens cap to be placed on it?

A: Yes it is. I had no problems utilizing my lens cap.

Q: 2. How many stops of light does this filter induce? And are the elements made from glass or resin?

A: I am sorry the element looks like glass but does not say glass on any literature on the plastic container. Also did not test for stop reduction.I purchased the filter for our trip to Yellowstone last June and provided some nice photo's of the springs and Geyser's. Not good for sun sets.

Q: 3. In the digital age is there anything a warm polarizer can do compared to a regular polarizer and warming the image when editing?

A: No not really, you can achieve similar results in post, but it is almost always better to expose the image as intended in the camera compared to in post. It gives a more authentic/natural and cleaner look.

Q: 4. Do these filters still use the 58mm lens cap?

A: Yes, filters with 58mm threads will use a 58mm lens cap.

Q: 5. Is this filter likely to cause vignetting if used on a Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 lens?

A: Between 10 to approximately 17 to 18mm, you will experience vignetting.

Q: 6. To be honest I have not researched lens composition. I read about this filter in a magazine many years ago and now have one for every lens. Does it make a difference? I have always assumed the lens was glass. As to light loss, I agree with another response and have never faced major light loss. If used in daylight it has never altered stops. Further, I would agree that light loss would be almost nothing to maybe 1 to 1.5 stops although the latter seems rather extreme. Not sure what you are looking for to render a decision, but I would never be without this lens, especially in the fall and doing landscapes/mountains.

A: I am 73 years old, have had one since they first came out. Now I have four.C.B.

Q: 7. how do these tiffen lens stack up to Coken filters?

A: Cokin are square or rectangular and you need to use a filter holder and adapter ring. These you just screw on the lens, not need to carry extra parts. The advantage of the Cokin is if you want to stack many filters and you are using a wide angle lens, there is less chance of vignetting with the Cokin in that situation. Also in the Cokin if you use a graduated neutral density you can raise and lower the filter to place the horizon anywhere. With a round filter if you get a graduated ND the horizon will always be in the center.

Q: 8. So you can put all 3 ND on each other and make a 9 stop ND filter? Will these all stack with each other with a step up ring on? I have a 55mm thread filter lense I want to use this for to but I want them to stack with all of my lenses with step down rings

A: You can stack all three of these filters to create 9 stops, however by doing so you are increasing barrel length. This may result in vignetting as your camera may see the filter rings when shooting at wide focal lengths. A step up ring from 55 to 72mm may help with this, a step down ring would have the opposite effect and result in severe vignetting.

Q: 9. Do these filters have screw on threads so you can stack filters?

A: Yes, the fronts of the filters are threaded at 77mm size also so you may stack them upon one another.

Q: 10. Does this filter have any coating for protection?

A: The Moose Warm Circular Polarizer is not coated.

[4.4 x 3.5 x 1"] WOW! So happy with the dreamy effect of this filter. Very efficient in video to create a more cinematic look. For photo, sometimes a bit too much mist.

[4.4 x 3.5 x 1"] I use this softening filter in certain landscape situations, not necessarily for portraiture. And guess what, that can be lots of fun! I use it with my 105 Nikor micro lens occasionally and can get the most dreamy look, just gorgeous. No kidding. I also have the 77mm size, pro mist 3 for the 70-200 zoom. Really can't tell much difference between the #2 and #3 strength. Get the black version if you don't want some halos around the highlights. I like the halos personally. The more backlighting or highlights with light areas, the more halos

[4.4 x 3.5 x 1"] Adds a nice low/medium glow to highlights. Not overpowering in my eyes. Using it on Photos and Video. Has a nice soft mist appearance on the surface in between the glass that looks like a fine mist of varying sizes/opacity. The warm 812 filter is very slight and adds a nice cinema feel. Will probably get the 1 next. Use it on 24-70 2.8 Zooms and Fast Primes. Added the Schneider Hollywood Black Magic 1/2 it has a soft black promist and tiny lenslets but not wavy like soft f/x, and True-Net Beige 2 feels like Warm California, will get Gray-2 and Black-2 next also in 77 for all my 2.8 zooms and Primes. Great quality. Tiffen - Check the lens and wipe with a clean microfiber cloth before use as they have a slight suction cup residue on the surface from installation. Thread with a brass ring on both sides to ensure future clean threading. Has threads on both sides is a nice feature.

[4.4 x 3.5 x 1"] I bought the 1/4 and 1/8 Black-Pro-Mist filters for myself recently but I have been using them for years on a number of productions and they always help in achieving the 'look' that so many modern filmmakers desire. There's a reason why their diffusion filter is so trusted and praised even years after the competition has had time to catch up.

You get so much value for your money and you can honestly never go wrong with using either of these filters.
