The white, 60" Photek GoodLighter Umbrella 7mm 8mm Shafts White 60"from Photek GoodLighter Umbrella 7mm 8mm Shafts White 60"is a redesigned classic umbrella with a fiberglass frame and white reflective fabric that is free from contaminates that might add an unwanted color cast to your light output. The 10-panel construction (instead of the usual 8) gives the fabric tighter support that results in more controllable output and refined circular catchlights in the eyes of your subjects. The umbrella's black backing is removable allowing you to shoot through the translucent white fabric for snappier contrast. This GoodLighter umbrella ships with a removable 7mm shaft for lights that require it, but an 8mm shaft is also included to give options to the user.

Q: 2. Another question about the 46 softlighter... what light stand do you recommend using to support the weight of the light?

[2.8 lb] This umbrella has become a favorite of mine for portrait photography. The quality of light is amazing when using the diffuser and our Profoto heads. This helps to reduce the reflections on skin that can be a issue with soft boxes.

[Black] I have been using the 46 version of this setup but added the 60. I use it with a Canon 580II strobe with a diffusion dome attached. The standard panel has a sock to wrap around a studio head, but I find it clumsy with a hot shoe strobe. The hot shoe diffusion panel has a velcro opening that fits around the flash head but allows the control panel to be accessable. The photek softlighter as it is referred to is extremely portable without the need for a cumbersome bracket. This is important to me since I work on location and want an easy unit to setup, breakdown, and transport. It's a standard umbrella that collapses as such. The front panel is removed and easily folded into a small ziplock bag (mine, not theirs). You just need a standard cold shoe mount with opening for an umbrella shaft and you're good to go. Beautiful large soft light source. I shoot beauty and glamour, so an ISO of 400 at f4 yields good exposures with fast recycles with a battey pack attached.

[White] This is the cheapest, easiest light mod I've used for creating big, soft light. For location portraiture, it's a no-brainer. Note that, although it's silver, even with the diffusion fabric off, it still makes very soft light, in part because the interior is not silver foil but more like a silver satin. If you're looking for contrasty light, this is not the one.
