Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I see that I would need an FCC license. How do I get this license. Can I buy and operate these with out a license? Thanks

A: As per the Midland GXT1000VP4 manual: "The radios operate on GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) frequencies which require an FCC (Federal Communications Commission) license. You must be licensed prior to operating the radio. Serious penalties could result from unlicensed use of GMRS channels, in violation of FCC rules, as stipulated in the Communications Acts Sections 501 and 502 (amended). You will be issued a call sign by the FCC which should be used for station identification when operating the radio on GMRS channels. You should also cooperate by engaging in permissible transmissions only, avoiding channel interference with other GMRS users, and being prudent with the length of your transmission time. To obtain a license or ask questions about the license application, contact the FCC at 1-888-CALL FCC or go to the FCC's website: http://www.fcc.gov and request form 605."

Q: 2. Do I need a license to use this walkie-talkie?

A: No. These radios operate in the public air wave spectrum, so no FCC license required.

Q: 3. Can I get another charging base to charge units in different locations?

A: Extra chargers are available for this radio. The model number is AVP10 for $20.

Q: 4. Can you use a single ear w/ mic headset?

A: Yes. This walkie talkie is great.

Q: 5. What is the transmit power watts ?

A: The T77VP5 is rated a little under 2 watts, so it can be sold into Canada as well as the US.

Q: 6. Can I ask if these come with the charging docks or do they need to be purchased separately?

A: This does not include charging docks.

Q: 7. The page says that these are UHF radios and that a license is required, while midland's website says they are licence-free FRS radios. Is the description here up to date?

A: There is no license needed for these radios. I will have the site corrected. Thank you for pointing out the error.

Q: 8. Do you have to use the headset for the radios to work? Specifically, can you use just the handset?

A: No, the headsets are an extra asset, but not necessary to use the radio.

Q: 9. hi, Can this be used in Singapore?

A: All two-way radios will work anywhere, however they may not be legal there. This radio is only authorized to be used in the United States. You would have to check with the government of that country to make sure the channels and frequencies are legal and public to use.

Q: 10. do you need an FCC license for this radio ?

A: Yes, an FCC license is required to use GMRS radios such as the Midland X-Talker T290VP4 Two-Way Communication Radio.

[38] I love these radios. I am a full time RVer and am frequently in areas with no cell signal, but I can always count on these radios for reliable communication. I have used them in all types of terrain and weather, and they have never let me down. Crystal clear reception!
My favorite feature is the weather radio. It's great to be able to get a complete extended forecast with the push of a button. I'm also very impressed with the battery life. I can use them for days without having to recharge, making them essential during a power outage or the like. I would suggest everyone have a set of these given the current events.

[38] Camping in an isolated area behind a large hill was the perfect place to review these radios. However, with the hill as an obstruction our range was limited. The Midland's instruction booklet is easy to follow, buttons are easy to operate, radio is comfortable to hold, and the belt clip is very tight (exercise care unlatching to prevent breaking). The NOAA Weather Radio is a great feature too. The radios can be charged while positioned on the charging stand or via a charging cord plugged directly into the radio and to an electrical source (such as a portable power bank). We are very impressed with the clear reception and convenience of the Midland X-Talker Two-way Radios. We are looking forward to using these radios during our future no-cell service camping, fishing, and hiking adventures.

[Screw-On] These walkie talkies worked great and were simple enough for anyone to use. They worked more then a mile away through the suburbs. The clips were very sturdy and will make it very hard for the radio to fall off. The private channels worked well even with all three. Overall this is a great quality product for anyone.

[Screw-On] Purchased these radios a few months ago for use on my property. They were easy to set up and use right out of the box. The sound quality is good and they are loud and easy to hear. Excited to try them on some hunting trips this spring!

[Screw-On] Midland Radios are perfect for a hike, in a campground, and between cars! These radios stayed charged for a long time and can even be plugged into a USB in my Subaru to charge once off the trails. I used this product in three different settings. First I tried this product in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The radios worked well communicating on the trail. They fit nicely on my hiking pack strap, stayed charged the whole trail, and worked most of the trail within a couple miles of the other group. It is also a great product for caravan’s on a trip and communicates vehicle to vehicle with ease. Lastly, within a campground the product is useful in communicating with other groups around the campground or on trails. There are a couple things to know ahead of buying the product. Although it says up to 28 miles, know that this means on flat open sighted ground. There are three radios and only two slots in the charging station. Overall, these radios are great, light, tough, and great for hiking, camping, and long road trips!

[22] Pros:
-Clear audio. Used in primarily close range but at most was a football field's length apart and the sound quality was super clear—no static or fuzzy transmissions.
-Good distance. Obviously the number of objects between radios can affect your distance but they transmitted between and through a metal barn, lots of cars, PA system, and lots of other interfering things, and I would feel comfortable having the radios farther apart and still be able to use them.
-Easy to use. These radios have so many functions and abilities that it could get overwhelming but navigating the functions was very easy and the owner’s manual was clear.

Not tested fully:
-How long the batteries last on one charge. I tried to put it through the paces during a 6-hour wedding that I needed to communicate with my second shooter and the battery meter didn’t waiver at all, so that’s promising.

If I were to add any functionality, it would be to add a backlit screen to be able to maneuver through channels with ease in the dark

[22] I bought these radio's a few years ago and have enjoyed them ever since.
Very easy to use menu functions and great range. I am thinking about doing a review of these walkie talkies on my youtube channel. Thanks
