The Tiffen 5x5" 85 Linear Polarizer Filtercombines both an 85 color conversion filter with a linear polarizing filter to blend the effects of both filter types into a single, convenient solution.

The 85 color conversion aspect of the filter provides a warming effect and decreases the color temperature from 5500K to 3400K, allowing the use of tungsten balanced film in daylight conditions.

The linear polarizing aspect of the filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. This results in a noticeable increase in the saturation of skies and foliage, as well as clearer imagery when photographing in hazy conditions. A linear polarizer differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not supports use of a camera's autofocus or auto exposure functions; it is best suited for use with manual cameras, such as view cameras, that are not dependent on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering settings.

There is a total filter factor of about 6x, requiring an increase of 2.6 stops for normal exposure. Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter measures 5 x 5" / 127 x 127mm.

Linear polarizer and 85 amber color conversion filter combination.

Total filter factor of approximately 6x requires 2.6 stops of additional exposure for normal results.

Warming 85 color conversion filter decreases color temperature from 5500K to 3400K for using tungsten-balanced film in daylight conditions.

Polarizer helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.

Strongest polarizing effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I have a Nikon Coolpix L340. I am aware that it's lens is 35mm. Is this polarizer applicable to that particular camera?

A: The Nikon COOLPIX L340 digital camera does not have filter threads on the lens. So you cannot use any filters on this camera.

Q: 2. Is there one or a quantity of four filters per package?

A: This would be one linear polarizer measuring 4 X 4.

Q: 3. Can I screw on and attach a metal hood to this polarizer?

A: The, the front of this filter is threaded and can accept any other 49mm sized hood or filter.

Q: 4. Will this fit the LEE filter system holder (used with the LEE hood)? If not, can the rubber/plastic edge in the picture of the filter be removed so it could fit?

A: The Lee filter system has to be modified slightly to allow 4x4" filters to fit. The edge is actually glass so cannot be easily removed.

Q: 5. I'm looking to buy this filter to hold in front of the Rokinon 14mm wide angle lens I will buy soon since this lens does not have threads to screw on a circular polarizer. Will there be any adverse effects to my images by holding the filter in front of the lens?

A: If you plan to use this on a digital camera, I advise you to reconsider - a linear polarizer is designed for film cameras, and this will not be compatible with digial sensors. Unfortunately, there are no filter holders made that can currently accommodate the Rokinon 14mm.

Q: 6. What does turning the filter do? How can the effects be seen if it is used on a twin-lens camera?

A: Spinning the front of the Hoya 43mm Linear Polarizer Filter effects the level and angle of polarization. The only way to see the effect is to look through the lens that the filter is used on.

Q: 7. I'm buying a polarizer for manual focus lens, will focus peaking work with a linear polarizer? I'm using a Sony a6300.

A: Yes-focus peaking will work.

Q: 8. How many stops does this reduce the exposure?

A: 1.5 to 2 stops.

Q: 9. Can someone tell me the difference between this product and Tiffen's product?(a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/457543-REG/Tiffen_67LLPOL_67mm_Low_Light_Polarizing.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/457543-REG/Tiffen_67LLPOL_67mm_Low_Light_Polarizing.html/a)

A: The Hoya linear polarizing filter was designed for use on older film cameras - See the following description of a linear polarizing filter - (Two kinds of polarizing filters are the PL (Linear Polarizing) andPL-CIR (Circular Polarizing) filters which have the same effect ofreducing glare, however, there are differences in the way each worksin combination with your specific camera so it is important toresearch and choose the correct version of filter for your camera. Many of today's cameras use semi-silvered mirrors or prisms to splitthe light (a.k.a. beam) entering the viewfinder in order tocalculate exposure and focusing distance. PL filters can sometimesinteract with these light controlling devices to give unpredictableexposure or focusing. If your camera, whether auto or manual, isequipped with this kind of device, we recommend using a PL-CIR filter. Both types of filters allow you not only to remove unwantedreflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc., butalso filter out atmospheric haze enabling colors to become moresaturated and appear clearer with a much sharper contrast. These effects will prove to be invaluable to photographers at anylevel of interest.)

Q: 10. How do I use 2 linear polarizes as a ND filter on my Canon 6D ? Also will it be compatible with this camera ?

A: Two liner polarizers rotated with the polarization of each at right angles to the other can make a very effective ND filter. The problem is that any undesired rotation of either of the lenses, either by screwing them on or by rotating the polarized glass accidentally, will change the density to something you were perhaps not expecting. Why not just buy a ND filter of the desired density? They don't cost that much. If your lens has a 77 mm objective, the filters should be compatible, no matter what camera you are using.

[0.55 lb] In summer, when sun angles are high, it is difficult to get nice blue skies. But with this cheap polarizer filter, one can restore those washed out colors by reducing glare and improving dynamic range. A must have for anyone who does landscape photography.

[Glass] I photograph vehicles most of the time and this product is great at reducing (if not removed) the glare or reflections in the photos.

[0.55 lb] Completely satisfied with this product; cuts down on haze, cuts through reflections, and gives me a slightly more saturated, rich color on my camera. Should note that the filter comes in a standard hard plastic case which can be used to store it.

[0.55 lb] I still have Tiffen filters from my father's camera from the 1970's, they are that good. This polarizer is no exception. It is useful for taming reflections on water and controlling over-bright sunny skies, helping the blues look bluer.

[0.55 lb] I bought this polarizing filter to go on the new Canon T1i camera I bought recently from B&H. I shopped all over for this particular camera and B&H ... had the lowest price! Love my camera. The colors for my sunny daytime shots were a bit washed out and I realized that I needed this polarizing filter. It arrived in just a couple of days. I can see a great difference in the before and after shots. The polarizer really helps to deepen the colors and remove unwanted reflections. This is one of the least expensive items you can buy that will give you very visible results in your photos along with protecting your lens. I'm very pleased with it.
