[3200 to 5600K] I originally purchased this light for illuminating foreground objects during long exposure night sky Milky Way images.
I have not yet tried it for this purpose.

However, during this stay-at-home period I have been participating in a local camera club daily photos from home challenge. Since my camera does not have a built-in flash (Canon 6Dii), I have been using this light to provide additional lighting to photograph small objects around my house in less than ideal conditions. I don't have to increase the ISO setting so high that noise is introduced into the images.

I think this is a very handy light (small, light weight, and not very costly) to have with me for a variety of lo light situations.

[99] I've been shopping for a while for an affordable LED light to use for interviews. A salesman at B&H recommended this light and I've been very impressed. It's much brighter than I expected and I love the ability to dial in the exact brightness and color temperature that I want. Plus, it comes with barn doors, batteries and a charger.

[17.8 lb] I was approached about using these lights from a producer on a recent feature film. I was pleasantly surprised with how well the lights performed. They were easy to use and allowed for quick changes on a shorten production schedule. The quality of light was so good that the leading lady had remarked several times on how well she looked on camera. It’s important to me that equipment you are using is not only meeting your expectations, but also exceeding them.

The versatility of the Onyx OYB10 allowed us to move very quickly from one lighting style to another. Having AC/DC options allowed us to move from practical locations in a house and restaurant out to the desert where power was limited to V-mount batteries as the main power source.

I recommend these lights on any project where you need a high-quality light source without having to break the bank. This was my first experience with them and it won’t be my last.

[1x Barndoors] All in all this light is a solid value. It gives you the option to put out a lot of hard light or add your choice of diffusion levels with your own materials. Bi color makes it flexible and the Sony type batteries make powering it affordable. Two of the larger bats will run it about a half a day if you turn it off when not needed.

[17.8 lb] These are a huge improvement over our Ikan iLed 312s. They are great, but in smaller settings where you aren't fighting light. The Onyx kit is great, plenty of light for interviews, and they can work outside! They're no HMI, but they throw more light than other LED lights we've used. Battery life is pretty good with the supplied batteries - about 50% down with about 75 minutes of full power on time. The Presto soft boxes are nice touch and soften the light well. They're harder to fold up than your bounce panel, but it all fits nicely in the bag. The only drawback is that this is no 'light' kit. Pretty heavy bag, even with the stands in the smaller bag... but it pays off with the quality of the lights. There is no lack of sturdiness in the lights or the stands.

[17.8 lb] I purchased this for our team after 8 years with our previous LED lights. It's smaller, but brighter; runs longer on the same batteries; has a diffuser and barn doors; has a proper yoke for mounting onto 3/8 studs; is very well built; has a great set of controls; and the remote was an added bonus.

Love the size because it fits into tight places and is easy to pack and carry. The AC power cable is LOOOOOONNNNNGGGGGGG which is a good thing. And as others have said the remote works anywhere. We never packed it at first but when we started mounting these overhead we found we can't live without the remote to adjust a light while it's four feet above our main subject.

The only drawbacks we've found so far are the locking mechanisms for the barn doors and diffuser. Sometimes they lock sometimes they don't, but we're not going to lower the rating because of it. There is some .... some bleed out from the sides but again, that's controllable and nit picky.

We have dropped one from about 6 feet and the light survived, but the barn doors were TOAST. ikan has informed us that the light is so popular that ordering a replacement will take a week.


But that's it! Those are so far the only issues we can find with the Onyx OYB5 so far and they're all small compared to what we get with the unit.


Compared to the competition everything is about on par. Some will cost more and give you V-mount or Gold Mount power options. Other brands will make slightly larger units. During our research we found the casing being used for another brand but the LED count was really low (as was the price)
