Unlike many white-light solar filters that produce views of the sun with a red-orange, bluish, or yellow tint, the 100mm ASTF Baader AstroSolar 5.0 White-Light Solar Filterreveals the sun in its natural white color. With an optical density of 5.0 for safe solar viewing though an optic like a telescope or spotting scope, the filter shows more surface details with greater clarity versus other types of solar filters. The filter is mounted onto a clear-white IR-rejecting plastic ring, which acts as a stabilizing element for the filter cell, and the ring is in turn mounted onto the aluminum front frame. The thermal expansion coefficient of the plastic and the film are similar to minimize thermal stress on the film for increased resistance to developing pinholes or tears.

With the ability to be installed on the outside or inside of an optical tube assembly, dew shield, or corrector plate retaining ring, this filter provides a safe way to view the sun through conventional nighttime telescopes. Recommended for apertures from 90-110mm, the filter is engineered with three centering bolts that can fit OTAs, dew shields or corrector plates with an outside diameter of 120-160mm, or an inside diameter of 150-190mm. Due to the shallow depth of the corrector plate on most catadioptric OTAs, for secure and safe use, Alpine Astronomical only recommends outside mounting on Cassegrain-style telescopes.

  • For the correct fit, measure the outside or inside diameter of the dew shield/lens housing - including hardware like retaining rings and screw heads - and choose the size that matches the measurement with some extra room
  • When used on Schmidt-Cassegrain, Maksutov-Cassegrain, or other catadioptric OTAs, outside mounting is required as the limited depth of the front inside diameter prevents full and secure engagement of the centering bolts
  • Recommended for 90-110mm apertures
  • 150-190mm inside diameters
  • 120-160mm outside diameter

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Why do you need the filter if you are wearing proper safety glasses?

A: You need the filter to protect your camera's sensor before and after totality. You should remove it during totality. Also, use the camera's display screen and not the viewfinder to protect your eyes.

Q: 2. My Nikon Action EX 16x50 binos have an outside diameter of exactly 60mm. Should I order the 60mm filters or the 70mm?

A: The Alpine Astronomical 60mm Baader AstroSolar White-Light Solar Filter for Binoculars (Single) would be too large to fit 16x50 binoculars. This Daystar kit would fit instead: https://bhpho.to/3qFnkJe

Q: 3. Could I put this on a Micro 4/3rds camera w/Flip out OLED display (and telephoto lens)??

A: The Celestron EclipSmart Universal Solar Filter for Optics 75mm to 100mm, is technically too big a filter for most Micro Four Thirds camera lenses. If you had a lens that was as big as 62mm- 72mm filter mount , you could use the Celestron EclipSmart Universal Solar Filter for Optics 75mm to 100mm.You may need to use some gaffers tape to keep it in place.

Q: 4. how can I adapt the Baader U-Filter 2" to a Nikkor AF-S 50mm 1:1.8G Lens?

A: 2" is the outside diameter of the filter, not the thread. It's an M48 thread as stated on the manufacturer website, baader-planetarium. Use a normal step-up ring.

Q: 5. Is the diameter of the actual filter part?

A: The diameter of the actual solar filter on the Celestron EclipSmart Universal Solar Filter is 63.5mm.

Q: 6. Will this fit the ASTROMASTER 70EQ Telescope?

A: Any chance to fit Sky-Watcher 70mmDo u know ?

Q: 7. Will this solar filter fit the Nexstar SLT 127? It is advertised as an accessory but in the description is states otherwise.

A: Yes

Q: 8. What size would you recommend for a Zeiss 20x60 IS binoculars? Are these the safest filters to use? Thanks.

A: The Alpine Astronomical 60mm Baader AstroSolar White-Light Solar Filter for Binoculars (Single) BH #ALASBF60 • MFR #ASBF-60 would be the appropriate sixe for the Zeiss 20x60 IS binoculars.

Q: 9. Can I use this on a Nikkor 200-500mm lens on a Nikon Z6?

A: The outside diameter of the Nikon 200-500mm lens is too large to fit the Celestron filter. You can use this Haida instead: https://bhpho.to/38vHAQw

Q: 10. Any chance to fit Sky-Watcher 70mm ?

A: We created the Eclipsmart Solar Filters to be perfectly fit on Celestron telescopes. I can not say with any certainty that they will fit another telescope outside Celestron's

[0.8 lb] I was able to successfully photograph all phases of the recent total eclipse with this filter. (You remove it for totality.) I like that it looks black with white and not orange.

[0.8 lb] Used this for 2017 eclipse and it worked very well. Sun was not tinted at all and came out perfectly white. I even got images of sunspots on the sun at the time. Great product for amateur use. Upload Photo feature not working. It does not let me browse my files.

[0.8 lb] The Baader Filters have been the 'Gold Standard' for both Visual and Imaging.

However the thin film material must be carefully handled.

[190mm] I purchased this filter to be able to use my telescope on the solar eclipse. I've tested it and it seems to work as advertised. I got a clear image of the sun through the telescope with it and no worry about eye problems.

[0.8 lb] This solar filter is a great buy. I am going to use it on my astroseeker 70az during the Aug. 21 eclipse. It didn't fit perfectly (probably because it is made for the power seeker models) but still fit on and i secured it with 3 strips of duct tape so it wouldn't pop off accidentally. I had no problems with it in the heat but I wouldn't recommend to use it on a really hot day for to long as it can warp and eventually break. Just remember to be safe.
