Q: 1. Will the de-clicked iris work well with the video on my d780, or does it still need to be locked on like f16 for the Nikon CPU not to Fritz out. If it works well I will probably grab this and an 85 for my film making

A: The aperture of the ZEISS Milvus 35mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F has a de-click feature specifically for filmmaking applications. To use the manual aperture on the lens, you will need to set this in the camera menu (go to F5 customize command dials, aperture setting and change from sub-command dial to aperture ring).

Q: 2. Hi, I have nikkor 24-70 f2.8 and I am wondering if there is a clear and basic difference between this lens and my nikkor for upgrading

A: There is not a straight forward answer on this one. You are comparing a zoom work horse with autofocus to a fixed 35 with a stop of light gain and manual focus. You have to really enjoy manual focus to love this lens. But as far as images, they have a unique look that can only be seen/ experienced. When i first got it I agonized over samples and pixel peeped to try and justify it's price. At pixel level this image will not blow you away, however when you look at the overall image (combinantion of sharpness, color, contrast, bokeh) it's amazing. The bokeh is the best I have seen of any 35, it just looks natural. and you can put people at the edges and shoot wide open knowing they will be sharp and not distorted. Really a great lens that I love shooting with once i looked at the images and not the pixels.

Q: 3. Is this lens made in Germany?

A: The Zeiss Milvus 35mm f/2 ZE lens is made in Japan.

Q: 4. Do i get the distance scale on my evf with the adapter for EOS-R?

A: No distance scale in the EVF will be shown.

Q: 5. Are there different versions of this lens with model numbers?

A: The ZEISS Milvus 35mm f/1.4 is produced in two versions, The ZE which utilizes Canon's EF mount and the ZF.2 which utilizes Nikon's F mount. These two versions of the lens have different model numbers which indicate their mount type.

Q: 6. When used on A7Rii with adapter, does it provide focus confirmation? Thanks

A: I'm using my Zeiss manual focus lenses on an a7R iii and find the focus peaking assist on the camera indispensable to sharp, sharp...sharp images!

Q: 7. Does this lens have hard stops?

A: Yes the lens does have hard stops and you can use the aperture ring manually if you so choose; however, there is also an option to de-click the aperture ring using a tiny tool that is included with the lens. It is very simple to do. So if you are shooting video or you just prefer to not have hard stops than you can use the lens this way. If you prefer hard stops it can do that too! Best of both worlds

Q: 8. I'm wondering whether to go for the Tamron 35mm 1.8 VC and benefit from its AF and VC or to get the Zeiss Milvus 35mm f2 distagon. I use the D800e and own the Nikon 24-70 f2.8. I am looking for a prime lens with this focal range, i.e. the 35mm, to use for street photography, and really don't want to carry the weight of the 24-70. I don't mind a manual lens and I am more inclined to get the Milvus, but it's also around 650g and I'm not sure if the manual focusing will stand in the way. So Tamron vs. The Milvus? Thanks. One more thing, if you think the Milvus is a better option, should it be Milvus or the Zeiss classic f2 zf2 diatagon?

A: Hi there,I am a big fan of the Milvus Zeiss Family. My latest purchase which is from B & H is the Milvus 35mm F2.0 which is used for portrait and street photography to me this is a gain for a lense that is tac sharp point to point. I have no regrets over my purchase and please allow me to put you at ease on the manual focusing which is fast and accurate as I am using the Nikon D810 to pair up with the Milvus 35mm f2.0. This lense is light and worth carrying around. My advice to you is to get the Milvus and not the Classic ZF2 Distagon because the Milvus are considered the next generation of new lenses produced by Zeiss with better coatings and newer technologies to reduce flare, ghost and also barrel distortion. The Bokeh produced by the 35mm f2.0 is fantastic. Last and not least the 35mm f2.0 is also weather seal. You will not regret buying a lense with so many positive comments with a plus.Laurence

Q: 9. Does this lens have an aperture ring? With all these product images, there is not a single picture that shows apertures

A: No, you control the aperture through the camera body.

Q: 10. I have a Canon 6D, I know there is the EF mount version of the milvus, but I really like the manual aperture nikon mount offers for this lens. If a buy an adapter nikon to EF canon, would the image be affected (In a negative way)? Or it is best going safe with the EF mount version but not having the manual aperture feature? Hope somebody can help, thanks.

A: I adapt Nikon mount lenses to EF mounts all the time without issues. It will not effect image quality at all. I do suggest buying good adapters though so there's no play in the lens mounts.

[Bayonet] Excellent contrast and wonderful renditioning of landscapes. I own the previous Zf.2 and although its isolation and draw at 1.4 was world class I have to admit I like the new Milvus version better as there is less CA. Looking forward to putting it to work this Autumn here in the Tetons.

[Bayonet] I've done a number of reviews of this lens. Very sharp. I've been lazy and shooting my landscapes at f8 and very pleased. But shooting the Maroon Bells after peak sunrise color I played around with f4-7.1. The f4-5.6 was noticeable much sharper. This is with 5dmkiv. Moving to 5dsr to get maximum sharpness from this beast. Just a note, it ilso going back to zeiss for substantial decentering. Even so, excluding decentered corner, exceptional sharpness.

[0.3 lb] I’m using all zeiss milvus primes. The 25 blows the 21 out of the water. And the 21 is amazing. The 35 1.4 testing blows the exceptional 25 away. Editing this week had me in shock with the clarity and detail on canon 5d mkiv. Was a landscape close to distance. Shockingly sharp. I have used the 28 Otus. At f1.4-2 Otus wins. At smaller apertures the 35 is equal. A finer contrast vs heavy handed. Great landscape lens. Does exceptional focus stacking, too.

[Bayonet] I do love this lens.
Background. I shoot landscapes/cityscapes semi pro. I upgraded Canon 5d mkiii to mkiv, replaced my Canon trilogy zooms and 24mm tse ii to all Zeiss.
I had used the Z21 on the 5dmkiii and was totally in love with my prints up to 24x36.
Research told me that my old lenses were not up to the standards of a 36-42-50 megapixel sensor, which is my next bump.
I went to Zeiss Milvus 25,35 f1.4,85,135, and kept 21 Distagon.
That is a lot of weight to hike with for a 63 year old guy with bad back, knees, and feet, but I have no regrets. The 85,135 are world class lenses in every category-except focus stacking.
I am still testing the 25 and 35. The 25 is extremely good and is my most used lens. The 35 stands out as exceptional. The clarity, transparency, contrast, border to edges sharpness, and color, deliver images that are very noticeably better than any of my old lenses, and makes me keep my old favorite, the Zeiss 21, in the case more often. A recent cityscape in an often photographed location just blew me away. I also like using the 35mm focal length to keep subjects larger in the image.
It's big, heavy and worth it for me.
B&H has supplied the vast majority of my gear for 12 years. Great organization.
