Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I run 4 shotgun mics through the xlr inputs and 1 lav through the line input and have 5 separate tracks in post?

A: Yes, you can input 4x phantom powered mics with the MixPre-6 II XLR inputs and 1x Stereo/2x Mono Mic/Line level signals into the 3.5mm Aux In jack. The Aux In does not provide phantom power, but does have a preamp to boost signals.

Q: 2. Would the front pocket accomodate zaxcom qrx recievers?

A: Thank you for your question. You should be to fit a QRX receiver in the front panel.

Q: 3. Does this work with the Sony Battery Sled?

A: Multi-battery flexibility accommodates 4 and 8 x AA sleds, L-Series sled options, plus NP-1, Remote Audio, and various USB-C type power options

Q: 4. How does "timecode support" work? How is the timecode generated in the MixPre-6 synchronized with or connected to the camera(s) (Canon EOC Cxxx for example)? I presume when this is done correctly I don't need to record scratch audio on the cameras for sync'ing in post?

A: The MixPre can work with TC a couple different ways: You can set the 3.5mm TRS Aux Input as Timecode in (although that means you won't be able to use channels 5&6 for audio); You can set the 3.5mm TRS Stereo Output as timecode out (although that then means you won't be able to use your mixer's line out); or you can input timecode via the micro-HDMI if you connect your camera's video output (although I've had trouble with introducing interference noise messing around with the HDMI port). So, you've got a few options here. If you don't mind being tethered, you can connect your camera to the mixer and feed timecode one direction or the other. Of course, that will burn an input or output on your mixer and you'll be tied down, so that might not be preferable. The other option (that doesn't require more gear, and won't require you to burn an input/output) is to "jam" sync. Basically, before you start shooting, connect them up and jam timecodes to get them in lockstep. Then you can detach, and even change your settings on your mixer to get your inputs & outputs back. I'm not a huge fan of this method, because some devices lose their sync when you power off & change batteries, so if it's a complicated, hectic shoot and you lose sync for some reason, you might not know till later. Plus, if you've decided to use your 3.5mm in/outs for a different purpose, now you'll have to unplug things and menu-dive to re-jam, which may not be workable in a rush. The third option, which is what I'm planning on doing for my next shoot, is to use an external device (like a Tentacle Sync or UltraSync or Locket Box or Deity BPTRX) to feed consistent timecode into both devices. That way you can set your timecode on your TC boxes, then mount those to your devices and trust that they'll keep everybody marching to the beat of the same drum. For me, this is the best compromise, because I don't want to send TC out of my MixPre (because I need the stereo output for monitoring and I don't want to re-configure on set), and I don't need my aux inputs on 5 & 6, so I'm okay burning that input for my TC in. That said, there's still nothing wrong with getting a scratch track for reference on your camera. It's probably a good idea to have *some* reference audio there for a multitude of reasons. Hope this helps.

Q: 5. Does this case work with a shoulder strap?

A: Yes. It does come with a "harness"

Q: 6. It states this can accommodate L series sled option. Will it actually fit with 1 or t2 np batteries in sled while using the Mixpre-6?

A: Yes it does. I just picked up the L-series sled and two Watson NP-F770 batteries (4400mHa) and have them installed on the Mixpre-6 in the Strut case. It's hard to tell from the picture, but there is a slot in the bottom of the case through which the sled protrudes, allowing you to install / swap batteries, and two velcro flaps that wrap around the whole assembly. The flaps are long enough that they would easily wrap around two of the biggest L-series batteries (7800 mHa). The batteries recess quite a bit into the sled, so they don't stick out as much as I expected . . . and actually allow you to stand the mixer up on a flat surface which is a nice happy accident.

Q: 7. Does this bag fits the MixPre 6 II?

A: Yes the Strut STR-MP6 Custom-Fit Field Case for Sound Devices MixPre-6 is compatible with the MixPre-6-II

Q: 8. Do you still need a Cloudlifter for the Shure SM7B or does this device eliminate that need?

A: No, a Cloudlifter is not needed for this combination. The Sound Devices MixPre-6 II 6-Channel / 8-Track Multitrack 32-Bit Field Recorder provides up to +76 dB of gain, which is more than sufficient for the Shure SM7B Vocal Microphone.

Q: 9. Will this also fit a MixPre-3 first gen?

A: Yes, the Strut STR-MP3 Stealth ii Custom-Fit Field Case for MixPre-3 II is also compatible with the MixPre-3 I.

Q: 10. Will this work with a Sound Devices 302?

A: This bag is made specifically for the Sound Devices Mix Pre 3, which is smaller than the 302. The Porta Brace Silent Audio Organizer Case for Field Recorders, B&H # POAO15SILENT would be a great option.

[Black] I talked to John at Strut before I bought this. https://strutcases.com/index.html I mean they make two versions of the STR for the MixPre 6 and the MixPre 3 because they are different by maybe an inch! This is thinking from folks that know what they are doing.  Its so well made and well thought out. And the price is sooo reasonable. And its from Vermont. Super. Super. Super.

[Black] A well-made bag that fits the MixPre-3 perfectly. Easy access to the sides through zippered and Velcro openings. Clear rain cover can be removed from top. Bottom is adjustable to fit even the battery sled with large batteries. Straps hold the unit in place. Material seems durable. Front pocket is handy or collapses when not in use. Very nice!

[Empty] I am not a professional sound mixer. I'm a doc DP and often need to run my own sound off of my hip. I was looking for a very small profile bag for a MixPre3 II, 2-3 Lectrosonics LRe receivers, Tentacle box, and an Anker PowerCore+ 20100 USB battery pack. This bag met all my needs.

It's true that there isn't much space, but that's because this bag was cut so precisely to the specs of the MixPre 3. You can't get a tighter package than this bag.

I have the Lectrosonics receiver packs wired to the mixer using low-profile XLR plugs, which are easily configurable through the velcro side closures. Plugging in headphones or adjusting the encoder knob is easily accessible through the zipper openings. Velcro is thoughtfully placed to attach/remove covers and to roll flaps out of the way. Adding a strip of velcro to your USB battery bank will attach directly to the bottom flap and keep it in place. Comes with a shoulder harness.

My only complaints (and these are pretty minor in my opinion) are that it can be difficult to get to the on/off switch on the mixer. And I wish the belt loops in the back were larger (they measure 1.5 wide, I wish they were 2 wide to fit more standard padded production belts).

Overall this bag exceeded my expectations.

[0.72 lb] I tried a few sound cases that claimed to be suited for the mix pre 3, but they all offered a lot of padding and spare space, this is a nice tight fit, with one medium sized front pocket.

[0.72 lb] I bought this field case for my MIxPre-3 Recorder a few months back and have used it a few times already. I have been very happy with the Strut field case. It is well fitted and does the job quite well.
