The Tiffen 5x5" Soft/FX 4 Filter for Photographycan be applied to purposely reduce the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles in portraits or to apply a general soft-focus effect while maintaining overall sharpness. An array of small lenses distributed within the surface of this filter smooths fine lines and textures, which can be useful for creating a more flattering result of a subject.

This filter has a grade of 4. Grades of 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 3, and 5 are also available where this filter type's effect becomes approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase. When higher grade numbers are applied, a halation effect around highlights can be created to further enhance a subject's appearance or produce a desired effect.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity and is compatible with filter holders that can accommodate 4mm-thick, 5 x 5" rectangular filters. It is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this filter fit the Benro master series?

A: I'm sorry, no. The Benro Holder takes 100mm wide filters. You would have to go with the Formatt 85mm filter holder or get the Formatt 13 stop filter, which comes in 100mm.

Q: 2. Where is this filter made?

A: According to our records, the Formatt Hitech 77mm Firecrest ND 1.8 Filter (6-Stop) is made in the UK. Please note that this is subject to change at any time.

Q: 3. Is this filter stackable with another circular filter?

A: It is with a filter of the same size or with a step up or down ring to the same size in this case 77mm.

Q: 4. What are the rings made of?

A: I would say light weight metal. Not 100% sure. Very nice filters. I have 6 of them.

Q: 5. Does this filter have threads on the front ring so that you can add another filter?

A: Yes.

Q: 6. Are the stops marked clearly?

A: Formatt Hitech 67mm Firecrest ND 1.8 Filter (6-Stop) is a solid ND so it only blocks 6 stops. A variable ND filter would have marked stops on the ring such as this Tiffen: https://bhpho.to/2SR9RfT

Q: 7. What is the difference between this lens filter & the Formatt Hitech Ultra version? [Formatt Hitech 77mm Firecrest Ultra ND 0.9 Filter (3-Stop)] Thanks.

A: The Ultra Firecrest series filters exhibit greater clarity and have lower reflectivity than the original Firecrest filters. Borrowing from the range of Firecrest cine filters, the Ultra series filters undergo a secondary lapping and polishing process after the initial polishing and bonding stage. This additional step helps to ensure flatness and consistency for improved image quality.

Q: 8. Any problem with vignetting with the 77mm diameter at wide angle like 16mm? I am thinking of using it for canon 16-35mm f4

A: You shouldnt see any vignettes from the filter at 16mm.

Q: 9. Does this come with pouch or case?

A: Its packaged in a case but the case itself i found too big to stuff in your bag.

Q: 10. Will this protect the sensor of a D7000 when taking sunrise, and sun pictures? Will use Live View and not optical for viewing.

A: You will want a 18 stop Solar filter https://bhpho.to/2MFxXFU.

[0.55 lb] As standard practice in the portrait studio I like using the Soft/FX1 because it provides just enough help to take the hard edge off a portrait. Now that I have the FX2, I find it's my choice for some faces. Its effect is still fairly subtle, but can sometimes be too soft for a younger customer's portrait when it is to be used in professional publication. I can't say I notice any flare or fog effect. Technically the FX series filters aren't a translucent milky material. It would be more accurate to describe them as clear glass with hundreds or thousands of very, very small bubbles trapped inside that act as lenses.

[6.75 x 6.5 x 1"] I will be using this for filmmaking purposes and based on my first test it appears to give a nice film like look as opposed to video, which is what I was hoping for.

[0.55 lb] Having worked with filters extensively when shooting with my film cameras over the years, I knew that if the softening feature on my new camcorder proved unable to do what I needed that a filter or combination of filters might just save the day. Although the Tiffen soft fx filter #3 is not sold for use with video, the results were exactly as expected. Once again, Tiffen came through 110%

[0.55 lb] I bought this filter to use with my Sigma 105 mm macro lens for flower photography. The filter produces exactly the dreamy, ethereal look that I often aim for in my flower photography, with a beautiful soft glow when a flower is backlit. The filter is solidly built and screws onto the lens smoothly. I'm totally pleased with this product.

[6.75 x 6.5 x 1"] This is a very nice diffusion filter that effects small line without softening the overall image. I use it mainly for video productions. The only caution you should take, is if you're using a still camera lens on a video camera, and thus only using part of the lens. This will actually increase the strength of the filter and diffuse the image even more, maybe more than what you want.

[0.55 lb] I wanted to try out a soft filter and enjoyed the results I got from this. I was able to keep the details in my portraits and still soften up the skin.

[0.55 lb] Just enough softening to relax the hardness' in a portrait. Does not create any fog or flare. Love using this filter in the studio for both women's and men's formal portraits.
