When you turn it clockwise, the spike is extruded, but does not appear removable. Turn the rubber foot counterclockwise, the spike retracts into the rubber foot. It looks like it can be used either with the rubber foot, or with the spike extruded; the inner channel of the rubber foot does not have the female threadings you are looking for.
