A fast and bright wide-angle prime, the Sony E-mount Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D Lens for Sony Efrom Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D Lens for Sony Eis a rectilinear lens with a sophisticated optical design to effectively limit distortion. The bright f/2 maximum aperture makes this lens especially useful for astrophotography and low-light use, and when paired with the 5.9" minimum focusing distance, distinct shallow depth of field imagery can also be produced. The optical construction includes three extra-low dispersion elements and two aspherical elements to control both chromatic and spherical aberrations for greater sharpness, clarity, and reduced color fringing. A Frog Eye Coating has been applied, too, to repel dust and moisture from the front element of the lens to benefit working in trying environmental conditions. Additionally, the manual aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture changes to suit video applications, and the front of the lens is threaded to accept 72mm screw-in filters.

Ultra wide-angle prime designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, this 15mm f/2 can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 22.5mm equivalent focal length.

Relatively fast f/2 maximum aperture benefits astrophotography and low-light shooting applications.

Rectilinear design renders subjects with minimal distortion in order to suit landscape and architectural applications.

Three extra-low dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color neutrality. Two aspherical elements are also featured to limit spherical aberrations for improved sharpness.

A Frog Eye Coating has been applied to repel both dust and moisture for added protection when working in inclement conditions.

Manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 5.9" away with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.

The manual aperture ring can be mechanically 'de-clicked' for smooth, silent rotation throughout the aperture range; making it ideal for video applications.

Five straight diaphragm blades are used to render crisp 10-point sun-stars when photographing point light sources with smaller aperture sizes.

Despite its ultra-wide design, this lens can accept 72mm screw-in filters on the front of the lens.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the Laowa lens a weather resistant design like Rokinon's 14mm f/2.8?

A: I'm sorry, this lens does not have weather sealing.

Q: 2. Why does it say auto focus yes on the spec section but it's a manual lens?

A: Err, the spec section is wrong? :-)

Q: 3. does this have infinity focus marking?

A: Yes, the Laowa 15mm has an infinity mark. On my copy, the rotational stop is just slightly past the center of the infinity symbol.

Q: 4. how does this compare to Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2?

A: The Zeiss has motors, the Laowa is manual. The Zeiss will have superior image and build quality. The Laowa is very good as it is. If you wish manual focus, good image and build quality and save some money get the Laowa.

Q: 5. Will you still get an exposure preview with this lens?

A: you wouldn't be able to see the aperture on the metadata , because the camera is electronic viewfinder you will see how the exposure looks like

Q: 6. Does this lend have art stops? Is there a cinema version?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa 15mm F/2 Zero-D for Canon RF has hard stops. They make a cinema version with a smooth aperture ring. Please take a look at the following link: https://bhpho.to/3AZPrDM

Q: 7. would anyone recommend this lens for video on a gimbal with the sony a7sii? my big concern is that since it's all manual focus it will be a bit annoying having to constantly focus on it

A: This lens is good for video and focus is not difficult but a follow focus motor would be ideal. Click the link below to view; https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q=motorized%20follow%20focus&sort=PRICE_LOW_TO_HIGH&filters=fct_category%3Awireless_lens_control_systems_23192

Q: 8. Is the lens hood for the Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/2 Zero-D Lens for Nikon Z removable like the lens hood for the 12mm f/2.8?

A: Yes the lens hood is removable.

Q: 9. Anybody have experience using this lens for astrophotography?

A: This lens will do a great job with astrophotography with f2 and manual focus and sony low light performance

Q: 10. There is vignetting when using 77mm slim filters and a step-up ring?

A: With a step up ring to a 77mm filter you should not have any vignetting.

[f/2] I use this lens for both interior real-estate and mountain landscapes. Works perfect and would recommend if this is what your shooting.

[Manual Focus] This lens is sharp, the aperture is large, and the focus ring feels smooth and easy to operate. Will definitelyrecommend it.

[Manual Focus] Tested against the 16-35 f4 @ 16mm, the Laowa has incredible clarity and sharpness (and I liked the zoom better than the Batis 18 I had a while back). Flare has not been an issue either. I was also surprised at how compact the lens is, even after comparing it at the camerasize site. It's similar in size to the Loxia and 55 1.8 with just some extra width near the front. Build is great, focus ring is firm.

I've read from several users that infinity is right in the middle of the infinity marker, that is also the case with mine and is convenient for landscapes without a very close foreground element. However, with astro, I have found setting it to the middle of the right infinity loop (focused just slightly closer than infinity mentioned above) is ideal. The coma demonstrated on review sites isn't bad in my opinion, but when I focus like this, the coma is even further reduced with insignificant changes to the central frame. And any foreground will also be a bit better as a bonus.

[0.25x] This lens is a winner for my real estate photography. I love it.

[Sony E] I wasn't crazy about the price, but once I put it on my a7s, I was very happy. Sharp. Minimal distortion. And though I keep seeing people say it doesn't matter on a wide angle lens, the bokeh is gorgeous. Oh and a UWA with a 72mm filter thread...awesome!

This is going to replace my 14mm Bower that I've flown FOREVER. I gave the 16-35's a quick look, but they seem even more over priced. Plus there's always something special about a prime. I recommend. Happy shooting!

[f/22] Upgraded my kit from Sony Nex-7 and a6500 to the marvelous a7iii.  For UW had been shooting the aps-c format Sony 10-18 f4 and Samyang 12mm f2.  For the a7iii first I tried a Tokina Firin MF.  It was decentered.  Replacement Firin was better, yet corners were unacceptably blurred at all apertures.  Ordered a Zeiss Batis 18, but cancelled as I really wanted faster aperture for auroras.  Received the Laowa shortly before 4th journey to Iceland.  Travelled with three lenses, the Laowa, a Batis 40mm CF, and a Sony 24-105 f4 G.  Could have done the entire trip with just the Laowa.  Images are superb, even wide open and out to edges.  center cropping, when needed, remained sharp.  Manual focus with a mechanical ring is an asset when shooting night skies.  Infinity on my sample came out just shy of mid point of infinity emblem, same as reported in many reviews.  To minimize coma at f/2 its written that focus should be just a smidge short of infinity, which I endeavored to do.  Was prepared to shoot panoramas but with moving clouds, flowing water and waves, and shifting aurora shafts single exposures worked best.  Nevertheless, the Laowa is my first lens with location of entrance pupil is marked on outside of barrel, and when installed on my PocketPano this facilitates adjustment.  So I am delighted with the Laowa, dont mind lack of electronic EXIF data, and believe I had the best (also smallest and lightest) rig of all with whom I traveled.

[15mm] Disclaimer: I am not a pixel peeper. New to the A7iii scene, I was not sure how to activate the Focus Magnifier, so my first few test shot was just trying to focus using the LCD screen, and focus peaking. No matter, the picture came out sharp (to my satisfaction) anyway. Then I found out the nearest focus distance was crazily short, so I started taking close-up shots of flowers, those came up sharp too! (The Ultra-wide angle helped to keep everything sharp). By the time I discovered how to set Focus magnifier on the A7iii, I was already sold. This thing is a keeper. Did I mention it perform quite well in low light too? Can't wait to use this for astro-photography. How much more versatile can one lens be? (Con? No EXIF. If that doesn't bother you, grab one!)

[72 mm (Front)] Great lens and great value. The lens is very sharp and has minimal distortion. It's hard to beat this lens anywhere near this price point.

[72 mm (Front)] Debated a long time between this the Zeiss batis 18mm to round out my other batis primes. The trade offs in price, wider aperture, low distortion and closer minimum focus distance won me over.

There is heavy vignetting, but I dont find it much of an issue for this type of lens as I rarely shoot large open landscapes, and from what I saw playing with the raw files, it corrects just fine. I do prefer the color rendition of the batis lenses more, but I can get to a similarly happy spot with this in photoshop, just takes a little extra effort.

Overall, a great addition to my prime lens kit, and would buy again. It gives some cool perspectives.

Only cons I see are the weight, and Im not confident in its weather sealing compared to the batis line.
