Featuring a slender profile and a slightly wider-than-normal focal length, the black-rimmed Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIS Aspherical Lens Nikon Ffrom Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIS Aspherical Lens Nikon Fis a versatile prime well-suited to everyday shooting. The double Gauss optical design employs a single aspherical element, as well as ultra-high refractive index glass, to produce well-controlled, sharp imagery void of spherical aberrations. Its slightly wide focal length pairs with the bright f/2 maximum aperture to benefit making shallow depth of field imagery as well as working in low-light conditions. The smooth manual focus operation also contributes to controlling focus position, and both depth of field and focus distance scales are featured on the metal lens barrel to aid in pre-focusing or setting hyperfocal distance. This lens' physical design also features a scalloped focus ring to recall classic lens designs of the 1960s as well as afford more secure handling during use. Mixing the classic-inspired design with contemporary usage, the lens also sports an AI-S type CPU to permit in-camera adjustment of the aperture setting for faster, more intuitive exposure control.

Slightly wider-than-normal prime, this 40mm f/2 lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 60mm equivalent focal length.

Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field when using selective focus techniques.

Double Gauss-type optical design uses ultra-high refractive index glass and incorporates one double-sided aspherical element to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for greater sharpness and clarity.

Manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 9.8" away with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.

Nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.

All-metal lens barrel integrates both focus distance and depth of field scales to aid in using pre-focusing and hyperfocal focusing techniques.

Scalloped focus ring and smooth focusing action affords precise control when handling.

Built-in CPU permits using in-camera controls for adjusting the lens' aperture setting.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this lens be compatible with both D7000 and Z50/FTZ?

A: Yes it is.

Q: 2. Where is this lens made?

A: This lens is made in Japan.

Q: 3. How long is the focus throw of this lens? I have the Nikon 35mm 1.4 AIS which I use almost exclusively for cinematography and I am considering changing for this just out of this information. Thank you.

A: The focus throw on my new 40mm f/2 is long, rotating 280 degrees from infinity to the minimum marked focus distance at 0.25 m, slightly under 10". I find it excellent for fine focus.

Q: 4. Aside from the obvious difference in size and focal length, how does this lens compare in image quality to the Zeiss ZF.2 35mm f/2 Distagon

A: There is very little difference in the focal length but the Zeiss lens has better optical quality in my opinion. However the Voigtlander is much smaller in size so if you are looking to keep your camera small and discrete, the 40mm is a better option. Both lenses have their positive points.

Q: 5. can it be locked in the f 22 spot, so that it doesn't accidentally change away from being able to use the dials on the body, instead of on the aperture ring, to change aperture?

A: NO

Q: 6. Will this work correctly with a Nikon F2?

A: Yes.

Q: 7. Will this work with my Nikon F3HP?

A: I works on my F3HP. It actually works on all Nikon SLRs & DSLRs from the F up to the D850 because it has the pre Ai bear claw, the AI ridge and a CPU.

Q: 8. Does it works with Z6 FTZ?

A: Yes with FTZ adapter

Q: 9. Does it come with 52-39mm Adapter, 39mm close-up, and 39mm cap? It should be included in the original box, please confirm.

A: Sadly it does not, the previous version did but not this one.

Q: 10. Will this work on the Nikon f

A: Yes, it will work on the Nikon F.

[f/2] Voigtlander and Zeiss have been offering superb quality manual-focus lenses in M-mount for ages, but they also have more offerings for DSLR and mirrorless camera mounts, and this is one of them. A great light weight walk-around lens for my Nikon Df (the smallest and lightest FF Nikon DSLR). If you need auto-focus all the time, this is not for you.

[f/2] What a hidden gem! I have no idea why this stellar lens doesn't get more exposure on the net.. Grabbed this guy up while it was on sale and I couldn't be happier by the sharpness, contrast and build quality. I put this lens on a D850 and it is truly amazing.. Highly recommend!

[57°] Perfect size and weight on both my Fuji X-T4 (w/ adapter) and my old Nikon F2. Color rendering and sharpness are top-notch. It's just a marvelous all-purpose lens that I've used on everything from portraits to a news assignment.

You wont regret buying this coz the lens is very good particularly very sharp on all sides. Even though manual focus, its easy to focus you can see it clearly. Thumbs up for this product

[57°] In two words...BUY IT...
This lens is just amazing. Fantastic build quality...all metal...Smooth as butter focus ring...aperture ring but can be controlled using modern DSLR's at 1/3 stops (have used on Nikon Z6, D800 and D7000). I love the results. My only complaint is that Voigtlander does not make more F mount glass.

[Manual Focus] This has been just the lens that I've been looking for that I adapted to my A7r. My first Voigtlander was the 58mm. That lens is also a well-made lens. However, the rendering of the 58mm was a bit too painterly, as I think I read one review describe. I was looking for a more natural image, something that I don't get with my Sony-Zeiss lens. This glass provides that. It is sharp, has beautiful natural colors, and the black and white works well too after some post processing. 40mm is a perfect focal length and is wonderful compromise between 35mm and 50mm. If you're looking for one walk around lens then this is it.

[0.25x] Everyone comments on how well made this lens is, and its true. Focus and aperture are precise and silky smooth, even better than the vintage Nikon lenses it resembles.

The front element is deeply recessed. I dont think a hood is needed in most circumstances.

One feature that isnt mentioned enough is this lens focuses really close - under a foot - making it even more versatile.

This lens is really a joy to use and will become part of my travel kit.

[f/22] I use this lens on my Nikon Df. It's good for everything except what might call for a speciality lens, ie Micro/Macro and telephoto.

[52 mm (Front)] I don't say perfect lightly but these are the finest Nikon mount lenses that strike a balance between image quality and practical size. I have owned and used a wide range of top Leica, Zeiss ZF and Nikon lenses. Love the Zeiss ZF but they are huge and heavy. Love the newer Z lenses but they're plasticy. Love vintage Nikon F lenses but their image quality fails a modern DSLR. These VC primes are just right, image quality is comparable to my Zeiss, build quality is significantly better than Nikon of any era, size and weight are ideal for travel and EDC. Also much improved bokeh and IQ to the earlier pancake VC 40/2 that I had a few years back (sharp but harsh). VC is on a roll.
