The white Genelec 8050B is a single 2-way active studio monitor designed to provide accurate mix referencing for audio engineers, musicians, and producers in commercial studios, mastering control rooms, broadcast trucks, or editing suites. It features a 150W amp driving an 8” woofer and a 120W amp pushing a 1” metal-dome tweeter, producing a frequency response of 35 Hz to 21 kHz.

A proprietary waveguide enhances imaging while the bass reflex port extends the low-frequency response. The aluminum enclosure is shaped to minimize diffraction. It supports a balanced input via an XLR 3-pin connector. Room compensation options include high- and low-frequency adjustments. There is a selectable power-saving mode that enables automatic power up/down via a signal-sensing circuit.

The 8050B offers multiple mounting options including threaded holes for compatibility with OmniMount and K&M brackets and an Iso-Pod isolation stand.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Do I get a pair if i make this purchase?

A: You have to order 2 to get a pair.

Q: 2. Would this be a good choice to pair with the 8050A (LRC) and the 8040A (Ls,Rs) for a 5.1 setup in a 15x10 room?

A: The Genelec 7360APM would be a better choice by the specs because it goes down to 19Hz, giving you a lower frequency response. However, your room is not too large, and you may not be driving the 8050 and 8040 monitors to their full volume potential. Since the 7360APM is a SAM sub (DSP/GLM-network enabled and ready for 7.1) it's price point is higher.

Q: 3. What is the best way to attach this to my MBP? I'm doing video editing and I don't have any Mixers / USB audio interface stuff. I just have the 1/8 inch headphone jack....

A: You can use a cable to connect from the headphone jack in your Mac Book Pro to the back of this monitor. However your audio will sound nicer if you intergrade a audio interface to the setup. The cable you will need to connect two of the Genelecs to the computer is in the link bellow. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1102499-REG/hosa_technology_hmx_010y_1_8_stereo_mini_to.html

Q: 4. Are these monitors shielded?

A: No, the Genelec 8030C 5" 2-Way 100W Active Studio Monitors are not shielded. The Genelec models that have an "M" at the end of the manufacturer's item code (MFR#) are magnetically shielded.

Q: 5. Is this a good monitor for everyday use on a computer with built-in sound card and 1/8" to dual XLR splitter cable?

A: The Genelec 8020D Studio Monitor (Producer Finish) is an excellent choice for everyday monitoring, and it can be used with your computer's built-in sound card if an audio interface or monitor controller is not an option.

Q: 6. Which do you recommend 8240APM or 8040BPM? ( I'm not mixing engineer. It's for my own project from composing to mastering by myself.?

A: the genelec 8040b i bought a pair and it was the best decision of my whole life the sound is flat but is the real sound obviously you need to start to fix your room with auralex and accoustic things

Q: 7. Cables needed to connect to a Focusrite solo

A: That will depend on which generation of Scarlett Solo you have. Assuming you have a pair of the Rokit 5 G4's, if your Solo is 2nd Generation will need two rca to xlr male cables like these B&H # COCRMXM6. If your Solo is the newer 3rd generation, then you will need two trs to xlr male cables like these B&H # PEPMTRSXM06.

Q: 8. Can these monitors be paired with a non-Genelec subwoofer without trouble?

A: Yes, you can pair a non-Genelec subwoofer with the 8020D monitors.

Q: 9. Can I connect two of these speakers to a Scarlett Solo Preamp?

A: Yes, a pair of Genelec 8020D Studio Monitors can be used alongside and receive signal from a Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2x2 USB Audio Interface with the proper cabling. The Hosa Technology Balanced 1/4" TRS Male to 3-Pin XLR Male Audio Cable (BH #HOHSX005) is an example of the type of cable required to feed each speaker: https://bhpho.to/3R26bkP

Q: 10. Can the ISS be disabled? I see that there's a DIP switch for "ISS" on the back, so I assume that's for enabling/disabling ISS, but I'd like confirmation. ISS is not a feature I need or want. Thanks!

A: An ‘ISS Disable’ switch is located on each product’s back plate next to the other room response controls. First, when the mains power switch of the loudspeaker is set to “ON”, the ISS™ auto-start function (low-power sleep state on/off) of the loudspeaker is active. If this function is not desired, the ISS™ function can be disabled by setting the “ISS Disable” switch on the back panel to “ON” position. In this mode, the monitor is only powered on and off using the mains power switch. I hope this answers your question. Thanks.

[White] The 8030C is a fine speaker but it struggles below 90Hz and is hopeless below 60. The 7050C works perfectly with a pair of 8030C. Setting up the phase and sensitivity took maybe 5 minutes. Getting it out of the box took longer. If you have a set of Genelec monitors, especially the 8030 or smaller models, this sub is a no-brainer.

[23 x 16 x 16"] Buy it. You won't regret it. For playback these are wonderful. Sounds so clear and for well produced/mixed music you hear everything. Vice versa for things that aren't. You hear everything. I still use headphones to properly mix/edit with.

[Active 2-Way] The sound you are getting for your money with these is spectacular. If there's any downside it's that they can sound phenomenal with the right listening position and maybe not quite as phenomenal if you site somewhere else. The vertical alignment is particularly noticeable. Luckily the rubber foot makes it easy to adjust the vertical angle, not something you are going to get from most monitors or bookshelf speakers that are in prismatic cases.

The only other slight con may be some hiss if you stick your ear right in the tweeter, but if you sit a meter away you can't hear it. I turned the sensitivity all the way down and that also reduced the hiss. With pro-level sources (my reference level is +13dBu) you don't need the gain these speakers offer.

[120 dB] Just marvelous! Crystal clear. Loud enough to blow the house down. Too bad they’re unaffordable for most of the musicians I know…!

[23 x 16 x 16"] I bought these for my small home office. The headline is that these speakers sound close to perfect. Genelec is one of the few companies that provides accurate measurements of their speakers. These measurements have been validated from third parties. The 8030c model measures almost perfectly flat from about 50 Hz to 20 kHz. Horizontal dispersion is also near perfect with smooth downward sloping response. This means that reflected sound will not introduce tonal imbalance if you're listening non near field. It also means that you can equalize these speakers to whatever response you prefer. There are a few minor downsides. First, low bass has significant distortion at high volumes. This is just physics: volume will always be limited by enclosure size and driver diameter. If you use a subwoofer like I do (crossed with 24db slope at 80Hz) and use them in a relatively small room this issue goes away. Second, vertical dispersion is not as good as horizontal. You need for the tweeter to point to ear level at the listening location. Luckily the bottom mount makes this easy. If you want better vertical dispersion you should consider the more expensive coaxial models like the 8331. For my case this doesn't matter.

If you want to research these further just google them. A popular science-based audio review site has these speakers #1 among around 100 tested, if you use them with a subwoofer. They compute a suite of measurements and run these through a preference model developed at Harmon that takes this data and predicts listener preference in a blind speaker test. The model explains 86% of listener preference variance.

Anyway, these are some of the best speakers around and I highly recommend them.
