This 86mm Coarse Tiffen 86mm ND Filter - 4-Stop Coarseis a solid ND filter with a filter factor of 16x that provides a 4-stop exposure reduction. Its 1.2 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this Tiffen 77mm Variable ND filter be stacked onto another nd filter to allow more stops while still using the variable? If so can someone add a link to a filter that would work underneath this one? I am trying to do slow exposure in bright sunlight and I cannot reach the desired results with this filter alone.

A: Not sure why you need another ND. This variable ND allows you to completely block all light even from full sunshine. I have this filter. Plus you never should stack these types of threaded filters as they can become permanently stuck. The threads are very thin.

Q: 2. What is the thickness (in mm) of this filter?

A: The Tiffen 4 x 5.65" Water White ND 1.8 Filter (6-Stop) is 4mm thick.

Q: 3. I'd like to add this filter to the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens. Is the 58mm filter the right size? Also is there a way to use a lens hood with the filter in place and if so what type?

A: The filter is the right size. The lens hood for the 18-55 is called the ew-63c made by Canon. There is a possibility that they could work together but i wouldn't bet on it. The hood would have to be applied before attaching the filter, and even if the filter could fit on with the lens hood attached it would be near impossible to tighten it on the filter ring. But the good news is that isn't really a problem. With modern coating on lenses, lens hoods, which prevent lens flare is practically not an issue unless you are shooting right in to the sun or bright light source. A lens hood wouldn't be able to prevent lens flare anyways when shooting into a bright light source. Basically, a lens hood will not have a large practical purpose so there's no reason to shoot with one on while using the neutral density filter.

Q: 4. What size lens cover works? Bought 85mm push cap but it was far too small.

A: The Kaiser 100mm Push-On Lens Cap, BH #KALC100, is large for the Tiffen 82mm Variable Neutral Density Filter. However, adding gaffer tape around the inside edge could make it fit.

Q: 5. Can these filters be stacked on b+W uv filters. Planning on using them for 58,72, and 77mm lenses I have with the uvs On.

A: I only stack this with an adapter to accommodate the smaller lenses. When I was looking at this filter, I chose the one for my largest lens and then bought adapters to use it on the smaller lens. This is the last filter I use in a stack and have used it stacked on my uv filter in 77mm.

Q: 6. Does this filter come with a carry case of any kind?

A: Yes, it is supplied with a protective carry case.

Q: 7. Which filter best work in a canon 6D?

A: Filter sizing depends on the lens, not the camera. Check your lens to see what the filter thread diameter is. Regarding which filter works best ... it all depends upon what you want to do. Each filter is designed for something different, see the link below for more information:a href= http://www.tiffen.com/tiffen_edu_camera_filters.html target= _blank http://www.tiffen.com/tiffen_edu_camera_filters.html/a

Q: 8. Will it fit onto Tamron 28-75mm f 2.8 lens and sigma 85 mm f1.4 DgDn Art lens?

A: The Tamron lens takes a 67mm filter and the Sigma 85mm takes a 77mm filter. If you get a 67-77 step up ring, then you can use the filter on both lenses. Click the link below to view; https://bhpho.to/2Y9DzNO

Q: 9. Anyone has issue with out of focus when zoom lens is zoom all the way in while using a variable ND filter?

A: In a DSLR, since autofocus primarily works better in better lighting conditions and because some zoom lenses with variable apertures have smaller apertures at the long end of the zoom, your camera might not have enough light to autofocus well. However, without knowing all the specifics, this is an issue that might be hard to troubleshoot. The Tiffen VND by itself would usually not greatly contribute to autofocusing issues.

Q: 10. Does it have IR protection ?

A: It is not rated for IR, This is a Neutral Density filter, but I yet have to come up an IR issue using it with my Sony A7RII. If you have IR issues with your sensor often like color shifts I suggest you correct those with a proper IR filter first. A Variable Neutral Density filter works by juxtaposing 2 polarizing filters so there is a highly modified light spectrum left, I wonder if you should be worring about IR at the end. Enjoy. This filter is a game changer specially on travel and run and gun.

[Solid ND] I use this for daylight video with a LUMIX LX100. Because the lens is fast, I needed a 4 stop to tame the shutter for video. It can also be used to get long exposures for movement in still photo if needed. By the way, I could not find a good value 43mm 4 stop ND. Thus, I use a 43-52mm step-up ring and problem solved. It's build well, portable, and easy to clean.

[0.35 lb] Back when I shot nothing but film I used Tiffen filters and I'm happy that the quality is still here. There doesn't appear to be any strange diffraction in my shots even way out in the corners like I have found before in economically priced filters.

[6 x 5.5 x 1.3"] The Tiffen filters are very reasonably price, the product is middle of the road for quality and the glass is very good. Tiffen has a great name and their products are of good quality. I go to Tiffen for my products because they are consistent in quality for the price. Always confident using Tiffen filters.

[6 x 5.5 x 1.3"] I bought this ND filter to help with photographing waterfalls. Although I haven't found it as useful on very overcast days for my needs, it has allowed me to have more success in photographing waterfalls in brighter sunlight. If not for this filter I would not have gotten one of my better recent shots where the sunlight was shining through the trees onto a small waterfall. It also helps with getting the swirl pool around waterfalls. It can also be stacked with a CPL filter, which comes in handy. I haven't found any negatives so far and I've used it several times. I should have bought it a long time ago and I wouldn't have to go back and redo several falls.
