Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Arista 76 film developer powder. I need developing times for FP-4, FP-5 Plus X, Trix 35mm and 120?.

A: This should be used the same way as Kodak D-76. At 1+1 Dilution Both Ilford FP4 Plus 35mm and Ilford HP5 Plus 35mm are 11 minutes. You can see details on developing times for the Ilford FP4 Plus here. https://bhpho.to/3jm4TSg. And details for the Ilford HP5 Plus here https://bhpho.to/2YKT3rw For Kodak Professional Tri-X 400 a starting point is 6 3/4 minutes. You can see more information for this film here. https://imaging.kodakalaris.com/sites/prod/files/files/products/f4017_trix_320400.pdf

Q: 2. The old D-76 produced a clear solution. When I mixed the new D-76 with water, it produced an opaque dark brown red solution. Is that normal?

A: Unfortunately, Kodak chemistry lately has a brown color to it, whether it is Dektol or D76, Kodak knows about this and are working on it but they say it actually has no ill affect on processing.

Q: 3. To mix D-76 you put all the contents of the package in 1 gallon of water to make the stock solution, correct? Then when it comes time to develop a roll of film, do you dilute the stock solution? Do you reuse this developer after you develop 1 roll of film or do you discard? Thank you!

A: Hi, Arlen:You can either dilute the stock dilution 1+1 with water or use it straight. My preference for roll film is to use it straight, although I know that some photographers use it diluted. I dilute this developer 1+1 when I develop 4x5 film.Remember that D-76 reduces the film speed by almost 1 stop. For instance, when I shoot Kodak T-max 400, I shoot at 320. For 35 mm film, my developer of choice is Kodak XTol because in my experience it doesnt reduce the speed film, so I can shoot at 400 ASA. These are my personal preferences, and they work for me. Other photographers may think otherwise. May you have any other questions, dont hesitate to ask.

Q: 4. If I buy this chemical, can it be imported to Mexico ?

A: Yes, we can ship this developer to Mexico. If you add your items to a B&H shopping cart, you can calculate the items costs, shipping methods, time for delivery, any taxes and total costs very quickly.

Q: 5. what is te weight of this item?

A: The 1 liter packet of D-76 powder weighs 100g (it's on the package!).

Q: 6. How long is it safe to store an opened bottle after squeezing out the air?

A: It is safe to store the Arista Film Developer Liquid (12 oz) in that state for 6 months.

Q: 7. what temp do you mix it at, is it the same as D76?

A: It is the same as D76. Water temperature needs to be 105°F. The mixing instructions are on the package label.

Q: 8. Using D-76 to develop Tri-X 400 pushed to asa / iso 1600. How much extra time to develop film? 35mm 36ex

A: Hi Kelly, I made an error. Please use times 10.5 and 7 respectively. Sorry chuck

Q: 9. Whats the formula for mixing this to develop just one roll of film at a time? I dont shoot film very often and if I made the entire batch, it would expire before I used it all.

A: There's no way you can mix just a portion of the package and get consistent results. In your case a solution could be to use a liquid developer like Rodinal or T Max dev.and prepare just the needed amount when you are going to develop. Rodinal is the best option because is very concentrated and have a long shelf life.

Q: 10. I want to ask what is a 1:1 solution? Adding the contents of the bag with a gal of water makes a stock solution, so how much extra water to add to make it 1:1, 1:2 and so forth.

A: Stock solution is prepared with 1 gallon of water. After that, you can use it straight stock or mix down with water at different ratios. So, a 1:1 ratio would be made with one part stock solution and one part water. A 1:2 is one part stock solution and two parts water. So for example, if you are making 900ml of solution at 1:2 it'd be 300ml stock solution with 600ml water. I typically use diluted solution (anything other than the stock solution) as a one-shot solution, that is, one run through the tank and then disposed.

[0.93 lb] This is identical to D-76 or ID-11. Mixes and works reliably/predictably.

[0.93 lb] Packaging and shipping was perfect. The item was easy to use and would happily purchase again from B&H

[0.93 lb] This works identical to D-76. A gallon develops around 32 rolls of 35mm film at 1:1, costing only 20 cents/roll which is slightly less than HL-110 (.21/roll), so this would put it in the economical category.

The main setback is that you have to pretty much use it within 6 months of mixing it, so be sure to have 150' of film ready to shoot!

[0.93 lb] After twenty-seven gallons used I can confidently say this: Arista 76 is consistent, easy-to-mix, and far, far more reliable than today's Kodak formulation.
