The black body Heil Sound PR 77D is a large-diaphragm dynamic microphone designed to provide focused directionality, full-range frequency response, and a vintage appearance for use on vocals and instruments in podcasting, radio, broadcast, recording, and live stage applications. It features a classic side-address design based upon popular RCA microphones from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Its cardioid polar pattern delivers 40 dB of attenuation 180° off-axis, resulting in a tight pickup area and minimized bleed.

With a high maximum SPL of 146 dB, it can handle a range of sources from vocals and horns to close-miked drums and guitar cabinets. It offers a 40 Hz to 18 kHz frequency response with a selectable high-pass filter at 80 Hz. The integrated microphone mount allows you to attach it directly to a mic stand without the use of an additional clip or shockmount. The PR 77's standard XLR 3-pin output ensures compatibility with most microphone preamps.

[Mono] Needed a desk mic for my Yaesu FTDX101 transceiver. Works well out of the box. Used the eq settings found on https://heilhamradio.com/ to make it sound even better. Get good audio reports. No complaints. Fine product.

[Low Cut/HPF] Clearly a quality foam. Perfect fit on my Heil 781. Does the job very well.

[Black] Excellent microphone with balanced sound from low to high with smooth, flat mid range. Looks expensive with a durable finish. HEIL stands by their stuff with good service after the sale. While it is overkill for ham radio, it does sound good on a transceiver and looks good in the shack. This microphone really shines on straight vocals, whether singing or speaking, with rather good clarity and articulation. This mic compares well with the Sennheiser e835 and has a slightly more open, airy high end than the e835, which has a slightly smoother, richer lower end. The Pr20 is especially good for female voices, while the e835 is slightly better for male voices - especially speech. But, hey, you be the judge! This is a solid, well made product that looks exceptionally good with fine fit and finish. At least that is MY take ... your mileage may differ. TT

[Side Address] Best snare mic I have used so far! There is a lot more bottom than with my B56a. Used it on vocals also and it's great! Looking to try it on guitar amp soon. It's kind of a go-to mic, just like a 57, but with something more, probably due to its large-diaphragm. Check the review on Recordinghacks! Be aware that you better use it on a stand tho, there's a lot of handling noise. For less handling noise, check out the pr-22.

[Cardioid] Ive owned my Heil PR-780 for over ten years. The original windscreen was more getting to be more gray than black.

Its nice to have it looking like new again.

[Black] This windscreen replaced the big gorky black windscreen id been using.  The sound was not muted at all.  Now I can see my reads more clearly.

[Low Cut/HPF] Burned out on SM57's for guitar micing. I heard nothing but good things about this mic and hasn't disappointed. Nice chunky balanced sound. Using it live to run my Suhr Badger through the PA.

[Side Address] The performance is as good as any other quality foam windscreen. It fits the PR40 perfectly even when used in the Heil prsmb elastic shock mount.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How big is the hole

A: The brass insert accepts a 1/2-inch stem.

Q: 2. I'd like to mount this on the side of my desk. Can you tell me the distance from the flush/mounting side to the centre of the hole where the boom arm goes? I need to know if it will clear my dest top's overhang.

A: Hi. It is about 1.5 from the wall to the hole.

Q: 3. Can the shock mount elastic string be replaced? Mine is stretched and nneds to be replaced. Thanks!

A: Replacement elastic bands can be ordered from Heil Sound.

Q: 4. will this fit an re320?

A: Yes, the Heil Sound PRSMB Shockmount for PR40 / Black will work with the Electro-Voice RE320.

Q: 5. Can I use this with blue Yeti?

A: The Blue Yeti can be mounted to a broadcast arm with the use of the optional Radius II shockmount.

Q: 6. Does that fit for any microphone arm?

A: I have the Heil Riser and use it with the Rode PSA1 Studio Arm. It fits perfectly. The hole is 0.5 inches in diameter, is slightly less than 1.0 deep. There is a stop at the bottom of the risers mounting hole to prevent the stub from going all the way through. The PSA1 mounting stub rests nicely in the riser and will rotate with some gentle pressure due to friction. There is a nice brass bushing and a locking screw in the riser. Very well made and sturdy. I'm not sure if other brands will fit as nicely, but the Rode arm works very well with this riser.

Q: 7. Where is it made?

A: The Heil Sound PL2T Overhead Studio and Broadcast Boom Mount is made in China.

Q: 8. How deep does this grip the desk? My desk has a beveled edge about 1.5" in. Would this reach far enough to grip past that?

A: While we do not have specific measurements regarding how far the grip would reach on this clamp, our estimation would be that this may be too short for a table with a beveled edge 1/5'' in length. In which case you may want to consider mounting the broadcast stand directly into the desktop, or using a desktop mic stand like this BH #KMTMSSBBK.

Q: 9. The top of my desk has molding directly underneath so that a clamp-style mount doesn't work for me. My question is, can the clamp be removed to allow a direct mount (i.e. a plate with screw holes in it)?

A: You would require the compatible rise for it to be able to do that. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/616745-REG/Heil_Sound_RS_1_RS_1_Riser_Mount.html

Q: 10. What is the thickest desk the clamp can hold?

A: This clamp would fit desks up to 1.5" thick.
