The Tiffen 72mm 81A Light Balancing Filterhelps to decrease the color temperature by 200K in order to warm the image slightly in order to match the color quality of illumination. When using an 81A filter, you will be able to attain 3200K balance when the prevailing light source is 3400K. The warming effect of this filter requires a 0.3-stop increase in exposure for normal results.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. can this be used as solar filter?

A: This filter is not designed for use as a solar filter.

Q: 2. I'm using my canon 60D for video. How much, if any, vignetting will there be when using this filter with a zoom lens? I'm using a 24-70mm lens and a 70-700mm lens. Do I need to worry about distortion?

A: When shooting the Tiffen Variable ND filter with wide angle lenses you may experience a color shift which appears as an X bar in the image. This is a common issue when combining two polarizing filters due to the laws of physics. To avoid the X Bar effect adjust your focal length and reduce the density (stop value) of the VND filter until the X Bar disappears. The Tiffen Variable ND filter has a thin profile to avoid vignetting which is most common when shooting with wide angle lenses. Due to the vast number of combinations of cameras, lenses, sensors and other factors we can not predict under what circumstances vignetting will occur and to what degree. We suggest simply adjusting your focal length, position and/or composition to remove the vignetting - use your digital camera's display for reference.

Q: 3. Is this 67mm filter compatible with Tamron 16-300 lens?

A: Yes , this is the right size .

Q: 4. spectrum?

A: This filter is designed to block yellow sodium-vapor light. Unfortunately the manufacturer does not provide spectral curve charts for their filter. We do have some test examples on our site where you can see how this compares to similar filters. Please check the article here to see the tests. https://bhpho.to/3xeHXuA

Q: 5. Can this be used on the FUJIFILM XF 56mm f/1.2 R Lens?

A: Yes, the 77mm version of this filter will fit the 56 1.2 with the addition of a 62-77mm step up ring.

Q: 6. Can I use this filter with step down rings for my other smaller 52mm, 58mm, 72mm lenses?

A: Tiffen's 77mm Variable ND filter can used on your smaller diameter lenses provided you have the appropriate stepping rings (ie - 52mm to 77mm, 58mm to 77mm, etc.)

Q: 7. Will this work on a canon xf100? And will this variable ND blur out the background of shots if necessary?

A: Yes, the XF100 has a 58mm thread. The nd filter cuts down on light thereby opening up the aperture to let more light in and giving less depth of field and blurring the background, and will only do that if you can adjust the aperture of your lens.

Q: 8. Will this work on the Sony 24-70mm 2.8 GM and will the hood and lens cap work on it?

A: Not sure. My Canon 24-70 mm take 72 mm filter, not 82.

Q: 9. If I have a sigma 18-35 f/1.8 will I still be able to attach a lens hood to the front with this ND filter on?

A: Noah... the Tiffen VND filter ring is larger than the diameter of your lens. This is done to prevent vignetting in images. Unfortunately, it will not allow a lens hood to attach.

Q: 10. Would this filter fit a Sigma 24-70 lens for canon?

A: This filter will fit any lens with a 77mm filter thread. Please check your lens to confirm the filter thread size before purchasing. If an 82mm VND filter is needed it can be purchased at a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/821128-REG/Tiffen_82VND_82mm_Variable_Neutral_Density.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/821128-REG/Tiffen_82VND_82mm_Variable_Neutral_Density.html/a

[0.18 lb] I use the 81B all the time on my DSLRs with the WB set to daylight, for scenics where it cuts haze, for flash, backlit and in-shade people-pictures, and in overcast. The light-loss is small and the effect seldom if ever too warm.

Incidentally other colour-correcting/-balancing filters are still useful, keeping the same daylight WB. That setting is right for interiors lit by incandescent or fluorescent, with an 80A or FL-Day over the lens. Those two really come into their own with mixed lighting, e.g. an interior with daylight coming through the windows.

B&H's price was reasonable for this large size and the shipping prompt and efficient.

[0.18 lb] this is a good filter. I've used 81A filters for years. I know lots of people don't like 'em but this helps punch up my images besides warming them a tad. I use these on most of my outside lenses.

[0.18 lb] A nice slim filter in new condition.

Contrary to what is often supposed by younger photographers, the 81B balancing filter is the best way of dealing with shade or overcast lighting in digital photography, as opposed to changing WB to accommodate those conditions. The human eye does not detect the blue, but it's there all the same. It also works well for backlit subjects that are effectively in shade, improving the tonality: the subject will be lightened & warmed, and to avoid overall overexposure gentle underexposure may be set. Pleasing people-pictures in what amounts to mixed lighting are one effect. The lighting in Interior shots is frequently shade, while any exterior lighting within the frame is sunlight or daylight, so the same remarks apply.

If the interior lighting is Fluorescent of course an FL-Day with WB set to Daylight works the same as a warming filter; but this is perhaps not quite the spot for that observation.

I use warming nowadays for all my c. 5000K landscape shots, not to cut UV to which the electronic sensor is insensitive, but to cut the haze in distance (which is by no means all visible to my eye-brain combo), define clouds and darken blue sky. That way what I saw is more nearly what I get.

The WB should of course be set to Daylight every time, the meter will take care of the quite modest factor.

[72 mm] The use of an 81A warming filter was recommended to me by a pro photographer and this lens by Tiffen did not disappoint. It really enhanced the contrast between a blue sky and the images. With good lighting, the addition of this lens made some of the images appear as though it was 3-D. The lens was clear and crisp. This was a great addition.
