Ideal for documentaries, podcasting, audio for video, and professional sound design, the Zoom H5 Recorder with Waterproof Case Kitportable handheld recorder lets you quickly record up to four input signals regardless of your audio experience. With a swappable stereo microphone capsule, versatile 2-channel inputs, and up to 4-track recording, the H5 is both user-friendly and easily expandable.

Like other H-Series Handy recorders such as the H4n Pro and H6, you can hold it in your hand, attach it to a mic stand or tripod, or mount it to a camera (shoe mount available separately); the H5 packs an impressive array of features into a rugged, rubberized body that's more than ready to meet the varied demands of musicians, videographers, sound designers, content creators, and news shooters.

From the plentiful battery life to the powerful audio processing functions, the H5 is well equipped to handle anything from tracking live performances and podcasts to recording interviews, dialogue, and sound effects. It can supply phantom or plug-in power for condenser mics, or accept direct connections from synths, keyboards, drum machines, or +4 dB line-level mixers. No matter the source, selectable auto-recording and pre-recording ensure that you'll never miss the start of a take, and stereo safety track recording provides duplicate tracks at a lower level to avoid distortion.

The H5's front panel is ergonomically arranged with its most essential and commonly used controls—transport buttons for record, play/pause, stop, back, and forward operations, individual record-arm buttons that double as mute switches during playback, and large gain knobs. For added safety, a hold switch disables all front-panel buttons to prevent accidental operation during recording. Day or night, view vital information such as audio levels, recording time, battery status, and more on the large, monochrome backlit LCD.

Each H5 input has its own dedicated gain control knob, located beneath a protective bar that prevents accidental movement during handling. There's no track selection or button pressing required to optimize your recording levels; just turn the dials (clearly labeled from 0 to 10) anytime you need to adjust the gain. If your XLR-1/4" input source is so loud that you need even less gain than the preamps provide at the "0" setting, use the menu system to activate the -20 dB pad (selectable per input).

Leave your external mics at home and travel light. The H5 is outfitted with Zoom's XYH-5 interchangeable stereo microphone that provides clear, phase-accurate capture in a classic 90° X/Y configuration for a tight stereo image. The matched unidirectional condensers are housed within a specially designed shockmount that employs rugged external mic wires and rubberized material to minimize vibration and handling noise. With nothing more than the H5, you're set to record speech, practice sessions, concerts, or ambient and environmental sounds, even ear-rattling ones up to 140 dB!

The Zoom mic capsule input on the H5 accommodates Zoom's line of separately available interchangeable capsules, which can be swapped out as easily as the lenses of a camera. With mid-side, X/Y, and shotgun mic capsules to choose from, you can be ready to record music, dialog, or sound effects without carting an external microphone setup. Opt for the EXH-6 combo input capsule to accept two additional mic/line signals via XLR-1/4" jacks.

Equipped with two XLR-1/4" combo inputs and a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack input, the H5 can accommodate condenser microphones, +4 dB balanced line-level sources, or signals from unbalanced instruments with active electronics. Turn on 12, 24, or 48 VDC phantom power to the XLR jacks, or 2.5V plug-in power to the mini jack. Whether you plan on recording studio condenser mics, a stereo feed from a mixer or wireless receiver, or a lavalier mic for an interview, the H5's preamps (identical to those found in the H6) are ready to deliver low-noise (-120 dB EIN) performance.

If you happen to setup external microphones in a mid-side configuration, the integrated MS decoder allows adjustment to the perceived width of the stereo image, which is beneficial for sound design, broadcasting, or general stereo-to-mono compatibility.

The H5 boasts multiple recording modes, and is capable of up to 24-bit / 96 kHz resolution. Record in stereo from the X/Y mic capsule or input jacks, or use Multi File mode to simultaneously record the X/Y mic and two external sources (great for getting the room sound and a stereo feed from a mixer). Alternatively, Multi File mode can be utilized for overdubbing in case layers of instruments need to be added after an initial recording. The H5's internal mixdown function lets you adjust levels and pans as you blend four tracks down to stereo.

Maximize portability by recording directly to an SD card (up to 2GB capacity) or SDHC card (up to 32GB capacity). A 2GB SDHC card will yield approximately three hours of 16-bit / 44.1 kHz stereo recording time using the BWF-compliant WAV format for uncompressed audio quality and industry-standard file compatibility. Note that media cards are available separately, and larger capacity cards will increase startup times.

Alternatively, use the H5 as a 4-in/2-out USB 2.0 audio interface at up to 24-bit / 48 kHz. For audio interface operation with an iPad (Apple Camera Connection Kit required and available separately), select USB Stereo mode, which offers two channels in and out at up to 16-bit / 48 kHz. The USB port also enables fast file transfer and firmware updates.

The H5 boasts 3.5mm line and headphone mini-jack outputs for simultaneously feeding your camera/DSLR and a pair of headphones. In addition to the dedicated side-panel headphone volume control, the level of the line output can be adjusted via the menu, allowing you to optimize the signal level being sent to your camera without the need for an attenuator cable. For quick playback reference, a built-in monophonic speaker is also provided.

Power the H5 via two AA batteries, or plug it into a wall outlet with an AD-17 AC adapter (available separately). Alkaline batteries can keep the H5 running for up to 15 hours of continuous 16-bit / 44.1 kHz recording using the built-in X/Y mic. When using the H5 in the stereo USB audio interface mode, USB bus powering is possible.

The rubberized, ergonomic body lends itself naturally to handheld use. Should you need to mount it on a mic stand or tripod, a threaded hole on the back of the H5 obviates the need for stand adapters. Obtain a hot shoe adapter (available separately) to attach the H5 directly to a DSLR.

The H5's onboard effects allow you to add polish to your recordings. Compression and limiting compensate for fluctuations in input level, while a low-cut filter helps eliminate wind noise, blowing, and other kinds of low-frequency rumble. Normalize files for maximum gain, split them into smaller chunks, and even insert up to 99 marks per recording.

There's an onboard metronome and tuner, and you can loop playback and adjust pitch and speed independently, making the H5 an ideal tool for phrase training.

The H5 offers selectable recording functions designed to prevent you from accidentally missing the start of a performance. By keeping the previous two seconds of audio whenever you press the record button, the pre-record option ensures that you'll never cut off the beginning of a great take. Auto-record can automatically start recording when a user-set sound level is detected, making it great for voice-activated recording.

Backup record enables the H5 to automatically record a duplicate set of stereo tracks with 12 dB less input gain. Even if your original track is distorted, chances are the backup version will be fine!

Use the RCH-5 remote (available separately) to control the transport, arm tracks, and adjust volume at a distance while eliminating handling noise.

The H5 comes with free download licenses for Steinberg's Cubase LE music production software and WaveLab LE audio editing software, representing a complete audio production toolkit.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does the H5 compressor/limiter send a live compressed signal to the line output? For example: when connected to a camera, does the H5 compress the line out to prevent a clipped in-camera recording?

A: If the compressor/limiter on the H5 is engaged, your output signal will be compressed. However, clipping in the camera is not determined by this alone. If one connects a line-level output into a mic-level input, distortion in the camera is inevitable. Also, if the input level is set too high on the camera, one runs the risk of clipping as well. If plugging into a mic input, using a cable with built-in attenuation is ideal; B&H # SEL2MZH4N6.

Q: 2. I'd like to record myself talking for a podcast. Does the mid/side capsule point towards the front or the back?

A: Consider the MS like ur face and ur hands open. so the M is your face and the S is the sides of ur hands. we would record MS typically for capturing ambience as well within the recording on a separate (S) track. I wouldn't advise it for podcast . The best thing you can for podcast is the following: direct one of the Stereo mic that comes with the H5 towards you so the other would be actually rejecting ur voice. on any editing software separate the left from right and cancel the one rejecting your voice. This way, you will maximise your direct sound. do not forget to put the sponge filter of course.

Q: 3. I tried using the Rode Videomic Pro with my Zoom H1 in a DIY boom setup. H1 maxes out (100) to hit -12db, which obviously isnt a good way to record and evidently sounds hissy/hummy/noisy. Would Zoom H5 be a significant improvement over H1 in that regard? Are its amps more powerful? Would it record much better/cleaner audio (hitting -12db) at maybe 60-70 as opposed to 100 on the H1, which would be kinda ideal I guess?

A: The Zoom H5 would definitely be a huge improvement. Not only are you getting xlr inputs, but Zoom made better quality/cleaner/less noisy mic pres in those xlr inputs. Even comparing the H5 to the old H4N which has xlr inputs as well, you can clearly hear a difference in sound quality. Less gain is required before noise starts.

Q: 4. Battery types seem to be restricted to Alkaline and NiMH. Can the H5 accept AA Lithium batteries?

A: No problem at all. The Lithium AA will offer hours of extended performance over standard alkaline types.

Q: 5. My zoom h5 after 1 year is giving little electronic hum in the xy capsule. Is it because of static? or is it because i used the AA battries of my photo flash?

A: Please contact Zoom customer support for further assistance: https://www.zoom-na.com/contact

Q: 6. Does this come with the MS mic as well as the X/Y mic ?

A: The Zoom H5 4-Input / 4-Track Portable Handy Recorder includes the Zoom XYH-5 - X/Y Microphone Capsule with purchase, but does not include the MSH-6 Mid-Side Microphone Capsule (BH #ZOZMSH6). This item can be added separately and used interchangeably with the H5 as desired: https://bhpho.to/39sjhHP

Q: 7. do i need special adapter cable to connect DSLR Canon 60d camera?

A: you can run a 3.5mm m/m cable from the Zoom to the 60D - makes it easier to sync audio - at least that is how I do it

Q: 8. Can I plug into a multbox or other conference room audio systems for clean audio?

A: Yes, the Zoom H5 Portable Handy Recorder can be connected to a multibox or other conference room audio system to capture clean audio.

Q: 9. This H5 currently offers an Auray remote free but I need to also get an AC plug and only see one for this unit offered in an accessory kit that has a remote which I would already have. Is there any way to buy just the AC plug for this unit?

A: Allison, i just opened mine a few days ago and have been impressed. If you read the directions it says that the usb that comes with it will power it which surprised me. I havent tried it yet. It also acts as a two or four mic usb interface for recording. So i plan to test that soon.

Q: 10. I have the Zoom H5 and love its performance in the field. My question is, is there a cable that could connect the H5 directly to the new MacBook M1 Max (USB-C ports) to use for things such as voiceover, podcast, or even Zoom/Teams? Has anyone used this as a "plug-and-play" style microphone, if it's even capable of doing so?

A: The Zoom H5 4-Input / 4-Track Portable Handy Recorder with Interchangeable X/Y Mic Capsule is specified as compatible with M1-based Apple computers and could surely serve as the audio source for various interface applications. The easiest way to connect to USB-C type inputs would be to adapt its standard USB-A cable connection with BH #APMJ1M2AMA Apple USB Type-C to USB Type-A Adapter: https://bhpho.to/3sWyl6J

[48 to 320 kb/s] The Zoom H5 is a quality instrument, with many advanced capacities above the the 4n. We put it through the motions in the field at a horse farm; with boom feed in, and output right into the camera for back up. Then studio under controlled audio conditions. The Zoom H5 performed magnificently.

[4] The Pre-amps on this are amazing. Better than the H4N especially for the price.

[140 dB SPL] I found this very user-friendly. Only used for one shoot thus far, with the Zoom EXH-6 Dual XLR/TRS unit (using 3 lapel and one shotgun) and worked a charm. Love the dual record at 20db less for when the levels topped out. Excellent little machine that will get a lot of use for broadcast TV and lesser productions.

[48 to 320 kb/s] I love the Zoom H5. I'm using it as an audio interface to record my voice with a dynamic mic (Sennheiser e835). I run the Zoom H5 directly into my computer on USB bus power (no batteries or SD card needed) and record to Camtasia. The H5 preamps are strong enough for the Sennheiser, even though it's a dynamic mic, and the results sound very good to my ear. Much lower noise than my Tascam DR-40 (which can't be used as an audio interface anyway, unlike the Zoom H5) and my voice sounds clearer and more natural with the Zoom H5.

[48 to 320 kb/s] I sold my zoom H4N to get this, and ever since it has made life so much easier! The battery indicator still gives inaccurate battery life, but at the end of its 2-ish hours of battery life, it will save the file it's currently recording before shutting down. Other things such as a dedicated line out port, ability to set either just one or both xlr ports to have phantom power, and physical dials for changing levels just makes recording that much less stressful. The ONLY thing that I find worse on this unit is the jog wheel on the side (for navigating the menu) which is a bit harder to press than the one on the h4n. The preamp is still not the best (it's a tad better than the h4n), but the zoom products have never been about getting the absolute best audio, but more so just getting an all in one recorder that's simple and versatile. I am so so happy with this unit.

[Multi-Track] Works well, easy to use and a lot quitter than a previously purchased digital Recoder made by another manufacturer.

[Yes, 2.5 V] Very easy to use. Records L and R with mics on top, and then channel 1 and 2 separate via XLR on bottom. Cannot record L and R independently with the included head attachment. Different head allows for 4 separate channel recording. Transferred wav files to computer - very easy. This was recommended to me by B&H employee when I called. So glad he suggested it. Was going to get another brand, but he did not recommend it.

[≤-120 dBu ] If you're a musician or a videographer in any way, shape or form, you should get this product without hesitation. A great video needs great audio and this is the tool to get that great audio at a cheep price. A video review would do the H5 far more justice than a few words but put simply, the quality of this product side by side with the Rode doesn't compare. The Rode video mic is great for run and gun but the zoom is pretty damn compact. Once you take the detachable mic off the top, it's about the size of the iPod one. The navigation of the system'a sophware is strait forward and user friendly. I haven't found anything about the product so far that I don't like other than the free memory card that comes with it only being 3 gigs. Perfect for recording live shows and almost any type of video production. You won't be let down by this one.
