Exhibiting improved clarity, flatness, and reduced reflectivity, this 37mm Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND Filter 37mm 13-Stopfrom Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND Filter 37mm 13-Stopis a neutral density filter providing a 13-stop reduction in exposure. This 3.9 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Designed using inspiration from their cine Firecrest filters, these Ultra filters receive an additional lapping and polishing process during production to ensure lower reflectivity and improved clarity and sharpness.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the SCHOTT Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order to maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

The Firecrest Ultra series filters exhibit greater clarity and have lower reflectivity than the original Firecrest filters. Borrowing from the range of Firecrest cine filters, the Ultra series filters undergo a secondary lapping and polishing process after the initial polishing and bonding stage. This additional step helps to ensure flatness and consistency for improved image quality.

ND 3.9 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 13-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistance for greater overall durability.

SCHOTT Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. does this work for the tokina 16-28mm pro system?

A: This filter will not work with a Tokina 16-28mm pro. We do have special filter holders for that lens. https://bhpho.to/2WkRXmt

Q: 2. Will this work with the Sony A7SIII?

A: This filter will work with any lens with a 67mm thread.

Q: 3. Will my lens cap fit on this filter? The lens is a Lumix 12-35 micro 4/3.

A: The front thread for this K&F Concept Variable Fader ND2-ND400 Filter (58mm) would actually be 62mm, so your current cap will not fit.

Q: 4. Is this filter suitable for solar eclipses?

A: No, the K&F Concept ND2-ND400 Blue Multi-Coated Variable ND Filter would not be suitable for solar eclipses. Using this filter for solar eclipses could result in damage to your camera, and if you are using a DSLR camera, could cause major damage to your eyes. If you are looking for a suitable option for eclipses, I would recommend this: https://bhpho.to/3VcNfph

Q: 5. I think I have seen some VND's have a total size larger than its threading part, which ends up blocking the ability to mount a lens hood. Does the size of this filter prevent the mounting of a lens hood?

A: You will be able to mount the lens hood with the K&F Concept Variable Fader ND2-ND400 Filter on the lens.

Q: 6. Can this be safely used for photographing a Solar Eclipse?

A: I would recommend 17 stops or more for solar eclipse, so I wouldn't recommend the K&F Concept Nano-X Series ND32000 ND Filter (100 x 100mm, 15-Stop) for solar eclipse.

Q: 7. has anyone out there used this on the nikor 14-24mm and how did they find it worked?

A: The Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 does not have filter threads, and this filter will not be compatible with that lens.

Q: 8. does it have a 67mm filter thread to stack another filter on top of it?

A: The K&F Concept ND2-ND400 Blue Multi-Coated Variable ND Filter (67mm) will be able hold another filter on top of it, the size of the filter to mount is 72MM.

Q: 9. Could I use a 62mm cap?

A: Yes. The K&F Concept Variable Fader ND2-ND400 Filter (58mm) had 62mm front threads which can be used with a standard 62mm snap on lens cap such as this: https://bhpho.to/3DjuEgF

Q: 10. I've never heard of magnalium. I always by brass rings because they don't bind like aluminum rings. How does magnalium compare?

A: Magnalium is an aluminum alloy with 10-5% magnesium and 90-95% aluminum. It is light, strong, and resists corrosion. In addition, the strength and hardness of aluminum increase when it is alloyed with such substances as magnesium, manganese, nickel, chromium, zinc, iron, copper, and silicon. Magnalium—lighter and more workable than aluminum—is used in making metal mirrors and scientific instruments. Since it is 90-90% aluminum, cross threading may still occur

[0.085 lb] Hi,

Purchased in late 2020 for Sigma 105mm 1.4 (Nikon).

This ND filter is really good because it does not create any color cast. The ND allows me to use the lens at f1.4 without overexposing the shadows (while using my strobes). It is a great ND filter, more neutral than a few others I purchased for a 85mm 1.8.

High recommendations.

[0.085 lb] I've been refining my ultra slow photography techniques for about a year now and figured it was time to graduate to 'the beast' - Firecrest's Nd1600. The results are amazing with the clarity I was hoping for, minimal barreling and silky smooth threading onto my lens.

Ultra slow photography is the most technically challenging in my photo skill set (I use a Pluto Trigger to do the math for me) and having a reliable 16 stop filter to rely on helps keep me focused on the art rather than the techno details.

[0.085 lb] Highly recommended.

I purchased a 4-stop ND filter (1.2). It never comes off my Sigma 105mm f/1.4.

Practically all my headshots and portraits (250 clients) since the purchase were taken with this filter. I can keep the shutter speed in a reasonable range with strobes (1/30 -- 1/200) without relying on high-speed sync. I can also keep the strobes at a reasonable range (1/4 -- 1/128), which wouldn't be possible without a 4-stop loss of light transmission.

Other ND filters have funky colors - maybe I was lucky but this one has not created any noticeable color shift. Thank you Formatt!!

[Aluminum] For this review of my ND 3.0 filter, 10 stop, I used a tripod, the Nikon MC- 36A remote and the ND Expert Pro app. This was my very first imaging with this filter. What I was looking to see the effect of the filter and what, if any was there a shift in color. As you can see, the color shift was minor. This is a pricey filter, however, it performed as expected.

[0.085 lb] I didn't see any reviews here, so I'd chime in:

I purchased this with the Sigma 105mm f/1.4, and surprised that it has no noticeably color cast (compared to some ND filters for my 85mm lens).

I'm quite satisfied. The glass is very thin and light, like 30-50% of the weight of a UV filter for the same diameter.

I use this to get wider apertures in the studio setting, given that my strobes can remain fairly strong, and the ambient lighting can either be cut at higher shutter speeds (1/200) or introduced at lower speeds (1/30-1/60). A joy to use.
