Exhibiting improved clarity, flatness, and reduced reflectivity, this 67mm Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND Filter 67mm 1-Stopfrom Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND Filter 67mm 1-Stopis a neutral density filter providing a 1-stop reduction in exposure. This 0.3 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Designed using inspiration from their cine Firecrest filters, these Ultra filters receive an additional lapping and polishing process during production to ensure lower reflectivity and improved clarity and sharpness.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the SCHOTT Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order to maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

The Firecrest Ultra series filters exhibit greater clarity and have lower reflectivity than the original Firecrest filters. Borrowing from the range of Firecrest cine filters, the Ultra series filters undergo a secondary lapping and polishing process after the initial polishing and bonding stage. This additional step helps to ensure flatness and consistency for improved image quality.

ND 0.3 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 1-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistance for greater overall durability.

SCHOTT Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will the filter fit into the leather pouch with the 7282 step up ring attached to it? It is hard to tell from the photos.

A: Yes the filter fits in the leather pouch with the 7282 step up ring attached or detached to it. I think you can even fit both step up rings into the leather pouch along with the filter. You could use a small microfiber cloth to separate them from the filter.

Q: 2. Can anyone confirmed which version this is? B&H photos show the stop indicators on the side as being lines, but reviews show the indicators being actual numbers.

A: that is an older photo, yes it has numbers.

Q: 3. Is this a solar ND filter?

A: For solar photography, you should use, at the minimum, a 16-stop ND filter. This PolarPro 77mm ND100K QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 5 Filter (16.5 Stops) would be suitable. You may also refer to our Explora page to find more tips on Solar Eclipse photography https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/buying-guide/lens-filters-for-solar-photography#:~:text=For%20solar%20photography%2C%20you%20should,a%2016%2Dstop%20ND%20filter.&text=Characteristics%20of%20an%20ND%20filter,expensive%20than%20Mylar%C2%AE%20filters.

Q: 4. I see the filter does not protrude from the sides like most NDs. Can you use the original lens hood with this filter?

A: Most likely, yes, but it depends on the lens and the hood.

Q: 5. I've read and heard online that this filter effectively cuts some measure of IR. How true is this?

A: Syrp does not list any specifications on IR transmittance. Without a listed specification, this is subject to product variance. It is impossible to guarantee a specific IR attenuation.

Q: 6. Is This Filter Really A 62mm Filter? Why In The Photo It Says 77mm?

A: Yes, Hoya ProND EX 1000 Filter (62mm, 10-Stop) is 62mm not 77mm.

Q: 7. Is the knob detachable?

A: Yes the knobs on the Hoya Variable Density II Filter are removable.

Q: 8. Does this filter have a hard stop at both ends or does it continuously turn?

A: Continuously turn

Q: 9. What size is the front filter thread?

A: 7artisans Photoelectric 82mm 8-Stop Variable ND Filter does not have front threads. You can not stack another filter or cap on top of this ND.

Q: 10. Is the front of this threaded to stack a diffusion filter with?

A: The front threading is mainly for use with a standard pinch type lens cap but it can also accept another filter.

[0.2 lb] I am a newbie to ND photography and while researching ND filters so many photographers I respected recommended the Firecrest Ultra...and I am very glad I listened to them. I plan on buying the less dense ones too.

[0.2 lb] The quality of these filters is outstanding. While they are somewhat expensive, they are worth the price point. The one thing I fail to understand is with the attention to quality and detail the weak link is the installation of the light leak gasket that is included with the filter. It is a challenge to affix it to the filter and have had difficulty with every filter I have from them. I don't know why Formatt-Hitech does not place it on the filter as part of the manufacturing process.
