Exhibiting improved clarity, flatness, and reduced reflectivity, this 67mm Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND Filter 67mm 2-Stopfrom Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND Filter 67mm 2-Stopis a neutral density filter providing a 2-stop reduction in exposure. This 0.6 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Designed using inspiration from their cine Firecrest filters, these Ultra filters receive an additional lapping and polishing process during production to ensure lower reflectivity and improved clarity and sharpness.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the SCHOTT Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order to maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

The Firecrest Ultra series filters exhibit greater clarity and have lower reflectivity than the original Firecrest filters. Borrowing from the range of Firecrest cine filters, the Ultra series filters undergo a secondary lapping and polishing process after the initial polishing and bonding stage. This additional step helps to ensure flatness and consistency for improved image quality.

ND 0.6 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 2-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistance for greater overall durability.

SCHOTT Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will the filter fit into the leather pouch with the 7282 step up ring attached to it? It is hard to tell from the photos.

A: Yes the filter fits in the leather pouch with the 7282 step up ring attached or detached to it. I think you can even fit both step up rings into the leather pouch along with the filter. You could use a small microfiber cloth to separate them from the filter.

Q: 2. Is this filter adequate for solar photography?

A: The PolarPro 82mm ND100K QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 5 Filter (16.5 Stops) does not block UV and IR light. UV light is what will cause the most damage to your eyes. Instead, get the MrStarGuy 82mm Thread-in White-Light Solar Filter, BH #STSG82MMSOL. This filter cuts both UV and IR light.

Q: 3. What size Push-On lens cap do I need for this filter? The frame of the filter seems to be larger than 82mm

A: If you are planning on keeping the step ring on while you shooting yes you will have to buy an 82mm cap

Q: 4. Can anyone confirmed which version this is? B&H photos show the stop indicators on the side as being lines, but reviews show the indicators being actual numbers.

A: that is an older photo, yes it has numbers.

Q: 5. Is this compatible with the Tamron 35mm 1.8? Thanks!

A: Yes.

Q: 6. Is this a solar ND filter?

A: For solar photography, you should use, at the minimum, a 16-stop ND filter. This PolarPro 77mm ND100K QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 5 Filter (16.5 Stops) would be suitable. Q: 7. I am wondering- if you had two of these filters stacked, would you be able to safely shoot the coming eclipse?? Stop wise it would seem so. I already own one and love this filter.

A: Everything that I have read on Canon's website and the Eclipse 2017 website says NO! Regular ND filters will not work. The filter needs to be photographic filters for solar photography. The danger is damaging the camera sensor, your eyes, and the camera electronics. You want to get a White Light Solar Filter, such as made by StarGuy.

Q: 8. What size is the front filter thread?

A: 7artisans Photoelectric 82mm 8-Stop Variable ND Filter does not have front threads. You can not stack another filter or cap on top of this ND.

Q: 9. Will this fit over a 67 mm B&W ND filter on my lens or do I need to remove the ND filter first. Also, will a 67mm lens cap fit on this Syrp ND filter?

A: If your existing filter has 67mm front filter threads, you can attach a Syrp 67mm Variable Neutral Density Filter to it. It isn't recommended to use more than one ND filter at a time, however. You can attach a 67mm lens cap to this filter.

Q: 10. Is the front of this threaded to stack a diffusion filter with?

A: The front threading is mainly for use with a standard pinch type lens cap but it can also accept another filter.

[0.17 lb] I put these firecrest NDs head to head with PolarPros NDs and these are slightly more sharp and higher quality than polar pros. Just holding these in your hand you can feel the quality of the build. Theyre a breeze taking them on and off of the lens as well. Worth the top dollar they are.

[67 mm] The quality of these filters is outstanding. While they are somewhat expensive, they are worth the price point. The one thing I fail to understand is with the attention to quality and detail the weak link is the installation of the light leak gasket that is included with the filter. It is a challenge to affix it to the filter and have had difficulty with every filter I have from them. I don't know why Formatt-Hitech does not place it on the filter as part of the manufacturing process.

[67 mm] For this review of my ND 3.0 filter, 10 stop, I used a tripod, the Nikon MC- 36A remote and the ND Expert Pro app. This was my very first imaging with this filter. What I was looking to see the effect of the filter and what, if any was there a shift in color. As you can see, the color shift was minor. This is a pricey filter, however, it performed as expected.

[0.17 lb] suppose you want to shoot wide open f/ 1.4 or f/1.2.. counting down from the "sunny 16 rules" from a bright sunny day, you would need a 2-3 stop worth of ND filter for the camera to be able to shoot at that open aperature, this can do it!! The mild color cast is easily adjusted post.

[0.17 lb] I bought this filter (95mm) to shoot the August 2017 eclipse. It worked perfectly. This filter, when shot in AWB (let camera choose white balance) does not add any color cast to the image. The images will be white, with no noticeable orange cast. you can always add an orange cast in post processing if desired.

I was very happy with my images in 2017 and plan to use this filter again for the upcoming April 2024 eclipse.

[0.17 lb] I am a newbie to ND photography and while researching ND filters so many photographers I respected recommended the Firecrest Ultra...and I am very glad I listened to them. I plan on buying the less dense ones too.

[67 mm] Another ND filter in my tool kit. Different brands can produce somewhat different effects. Some people like it, other's don't. I prefer to look at it as another option when making my picture. It is nice to have options. Optical quality is awesome, and that is what matters.

[0.17 lb] Highly recommended.

I purchased a 4-stop ND filter (1.2). It never comes off my Sigma 105mm f/1.4.

Practically all my headshots and portraits (250 clients) since the purchase were taken with this filter. I can keep the shutter speed in a reasonable range with strobes (1/30 -- 1/200) without relying on high-speed sync. I can also keep the strobes at a reasonable range (1/4 -- 1/128), which wouldn't be possible without a 4-stop loss of light transmission.

Other ND filters have funky colors - maybe I was lucky but this one has not created any noticeable color shift. Thank you Formatt!!
