Exhibiting improved clarity, flatness, and reduced reflectivity, this 67mm Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND Filter 67mm 4-Stopfrom Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND Filter 67mm 4-Stopis a neutral density filter providing a 4-stop reduction in exposure. This 1.2 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Designed using inspiration from their cine Firecrest filters, these Ultra filters receive an additional lapping and polishing process during production to ensure lower reflectivity and improved clarity and sharpness.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the SCHOTT Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order to maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

The Firecrest Ultra series filters exhibit greater clarity and have lower reflectivity than the original Firecrest filters. Borrowing from the range of Firecrest cine filters, the Ultra series filters undergo a secondary lapping and polishing process after the initial polishing and bonding stage. This additional step helps to ensure flatness and consistency for improved image quality.

ND 1.2 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 4-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistance for greater overall durability.

SCHOTT Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hi, pls specify the make. Is it Japanese?

A: Currently it is made in Japan. Please note that this is subject to change at any time.

Q: 2. Is the front of this threaded to stack a diffusion filter with?

A: The front threading is mainly for use with a standard pinch type lens cap but it can also accept another filter.

Q: 3. I've read and heard online that this filter effectively cuts some measure of IR. How true is this?

A: Syrp does not list any specifications on IR transmittance. Without a listed specification, this is subject to product variance. It is impossible to guarantee a specific IR attenuation.

Q: 4. Can the OEM Lens hood be used while filter is on? I can still use the lens hood with the old Hoya variable ND.

A: Hoya 77mm Variable Density II Filter gets in the way of the original lens hood and it cannot be used.

Q: 5. What size is the front filter thread?

A: 7artisans Photoelectric 82mm 8-Stop Variable ND Filter does not have front threads. You can not stack another filter or cap on top of this ND.

Q: 6. Can you adjust how dark these filters get?

A: PolarPro 77mm ND1000 QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 3.0 Filter (10 Stops) is not a variable ND filter so the darkness can't be adjusted.

Q: 7. is the front filter thread larger than the main filter thread?

A: The front of the filter will corresponds with the thread size of the lens. The Urth 77mm ND64-1000 Variable ND Lens Filter Plus+ (6 to 10 Stop) has a front thread of 77mm.

Q: 8. Will the filter fit into the leather pouch with the 7282 step up ring attached to it? It is hard to tell from the photos.

A: Yes the filter fits in the leather pouch with the 7282 step up ring attached or detached to it. I think you can even fit both step up rings into the leather pouch along with the filter. You could use a small microfiber cloth to separate them from the filter.

Q: 9. Is this filter adequate for solar photography?

A: The PolarPro 82mm ND100K QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 5 Filter (16.5 Stops) does not block UV and IR light. UV light is what will cause the most damage to your eyes. Instead, get the MrStarGuy 82mm Thread-in White-Light Solar Filter, BH #STSG82MMSOL. This filter cuts both UV and IR light.

Q: 10. I am wondering- if you had two of these filters stacked, would you be able to safely shoot the coming eclipse?? Stop wise it would seem so. I already own one and love this filter.

A: Everything that I have read on Canon's website and the Eclipse 2017 website says NO! Regular ND filters will not work. The filter needs to be photographic filters for solar photography. The danger is damaging the camera sensor, your eyes, and the camera electronics. You want to get a White Light Solar Filter, such as made by StarGuy.

[4.5 x 4.5 x 1"] I didn't see any reviews here, so I'd chime in:

I purchased this with the Sigma 105mm f/1.4, and surprised that it has no noticeably color cast (compared to some ND filters for my 85mm lens).

I'm quite satisfied. The glass is very thin and light, like 30-50% of the weight of a UV filter for the same diameter.

I use this to get wider apertures in the studio setting, given that my strobes can remain fairly strong, and the ambient lighting can either be cut at higher shutter speeds (1/200) or introduced at lower speeds (1/30-1/60). A joy to use.

[0.2 lb] I bought this filter for the express purpose of a trip to the Gulf to get long exposure shots in the afternoon sun. It was amazingly good!
