Exhibiting improved clarity, flatness, and reduced reflectivity, this 67mm Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND 67mm 22-Stop Solar Filterfrom Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND 67mm 22-Stop Solar Filteris a neutral density filter providing a 22-stop reduction in exposure. This 6.6 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Designed using inspiration from their cine Firecrest filters, these Ultra filters receive an additional lapping and polishing process during production to ensure lower reflectivity and improved clarity and sharpness.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the SCHOTT Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order to maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

The Firecrest Ultra series filters exhibit greater clarity and have lower reflectivity than the original Firecrest filters. Borrowing from the range of Firecrest cine filters, the Ultra series filters undergo a secondary lapping and polishing process after the initial polishing and bonding stage. This additional step helps to ensure flatness and consistency for improved image quality.

ND 6.6 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

This filter provides a 22-stop exposure reduction, allowing you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multi-coating is water- and scratch-resistance for greater overall durability.

SCHOTT Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this compatible with the Tamron 35mm 1.8? Thanks!

A: Yes.

Q: 2. Does this filter have a hard stop at both ends or does it continuously turn?

A: Continuously turn

Q: 3. I've read and heard online that this filter effectively cuts some measure of IR. How true is this?

A: Syrp does not list any specifications on IR transmittance. Without a listed specification, this is subject to product variance. It is impossible to guarantee a specific IR attenuation.

Q: 4. Is this a solar ND filter?

A: For solar photography, you should use, at the minimum, a 16-stop ND filter. This PolarPro 77mm ND100K QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 5 Filter (16.5 Stops) would be suitable. Q: 5. Does this filter have click stops for each ND stop? If so, do the click stops work even when the set screw/knob is removed?

A: No, the filter has no stopping when changing the filter strength. It is smooth throughout, with no hard stop.

Q: 6. Quartzline is also 99. What's the difference between this and that? Wouldn't a combo be better?

A: The PolarPro 82mm ND64 QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 1.8 and Circular Polarizer Filter (6-Stop) is a combination of neutral density and polarization in one filter. This provides 6-stops of exposure reduction, while the PolarPro 82mm QuartzLine Circular Polarizer Filter (B&H # POCP82Q) just provides polarization with 1.3 stops of exposure reduction. The ND and Circular Polarizer filter may makes sense for those that need an all-in-one solution. There are some that will only require a polarizer filter if they're working with a matte box or built-in ND filters.

Q: 7. Is the front of this threaded to stack a diffusion filter with?

A: The front threading is mainly for use with a standard pinch type lens cap but it can also accept another filter.

Q: 8. What size Push-On lens cap do I need for this filter? The frame of the filter seems to be larger than 82mm

A: If you are planning on keeping the step ring on while you shooting yes you will have to buy an 82mm cap

Q: 9. Will this filter fit the Nikon AF-S 200-500mm 1:5.6E ED lens?

A: Yes the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition)with fit the Nikon 200-500mm lens.

Q: 10. I see the filter does not protrude from the sides like most NDs. Can you use the original lens hood with this filter?

A: Most likely, yes, but it depends on the lens and the hood.
