The 86M with medium thread Tiffen 29 Dark Red Filter 86M Medium Threadfrom Tiffen 29 Dark Red Filter 86M Medium Threadis a filter designed to build contrast in black and white photography and separation between tones. In landscape photography, clear skies are darkened and when combined with a polarizer, a very extreme contrast is added to the image. Many forensic photographers use the #29 Red filter as it absorbs blues colors and enhances red. Therefore, the filter aids in finding evidence. Infrared images are also enhanced giving a stronger effect and look by making foliage look white. The red filter is ideal for copying blue prints, since it enhances the lines and is easier to view the image. It has a filter factor of 16.5, so you must increase your exposure by 4 1/3 of a stop to compensate.

Tiffen filters are not dyed, but are manufactured by using ColorCore technology. This process laminates the filter material between two pieces of optical glass and grinds down and polishes the glass. The glass is then mounted to the metal ring, which after that can be screwed onto the lens for the desired effect.

[Single Coated] As the previous reviewer mentioned, this piece of glass is 4mm thick instead of the more standard 2mm thick that filter systems accommodate. If you are using the original Lee 4x4 setup, you can order 4mm side guides (google it) for your kit that will allow to use the thicker glass. I hope this helps someone. 5

[6 x 6 x 1"] The filter, as with other Heliopan 95mm filters I have purchased are incredibly, well made and durable. As always the glass is incredible and performs to exacting specifications. The issue unfortunately is B&H, the several 95mm Heliopan are all special order which is not an issue with myself or with B&H. All those I have looked at fall into two categories two to four weeks anticipated estimatedarrival or four to six weeks estimated arrival. Neither line is true and unfortunately B&H customer service reacts with no knowledge or awareness of the issue or familiarity with company policies. Heliopan U.S.A. clearly states on there website the mentioned sizes are indeed special order items and shall take an estimated eight to ten weeks, far closer to true delivery practices and priced exactly the same. My business for these filters shall be switched to the filter manufacturer directly rather than have to deal with the B&H customer inexperience and nonsense. 5

[0.25 lb] I use this in place of the IR72 quite often and it delivers. It gives less contrast with some of those IR films and still renders beautiful clouds and foliage. 5

[6 x 6 x 1"] From Ilford FP4 to Rollei Infrared and 80S, this filter adds contrast and separates tones beautifully. Aim your lens at some clouds and prepare to be amazed. Good quality glass, good quality mount and threads. 5

[0.25 lb] Sometimes use this with IR film instead of the much darker IR72 filter. With the 29 filter, I can shoot handheld and not worry about blur or camera shake. It gives a gentler IR look, but a great look all the same. 5
