Exhibiting improved clarity, flatness, and reduced reflectivity, this 95mm Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND Filter 95mm 2-Stopfrom Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND Filter 95mm 2-Stopis a neutral density filter providing a 2-stop reduction in exposure. This 0.6 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Designed using inspiration from their cine Firecrest filters, these Ultra filters receive an additional lapping and polishing process during production to ensure lower reflectivity and improved clarity and sharpness.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the SCHOTT Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order to maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

The Firecrest Ultra series filters exhibit greater clarity and have lower reflectivity than the original Firecrest filters. Borrowing from the range of Firecrest cine filters, the Ultra series filters undergo a secondary lapping and polishing process after the initial polishing and bonding stage. This additional step helps to ensure flatness and consistency for improved image quality.

ND 0.6 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 2-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistance for greater overall durability.

SCHOTT Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. My lens has a 77 mm thread. I'm not sure what the "magnetic adapter ring" is for?

A: Ice 77mm Solar Mc Nd100000 is not a screw in filter. The adapter ring screws into the 77 mm thread and the ND filter will magnetically attach to the ring.

Q: 2. has anyone out there used this on the nikor 14-24mm and how did they find it worked?

A: The Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 does not have filter threads, and this filter will not be compatible with that lens.

Q: 3. Is this good to shot the Solar Eclipse with an FE 200-600 f/6.3 and a 1.4 teleconverter. Is the image white or yellow?

A: Yes, the Kase Wolverine ND100000 Magnetic Filter with Adapter Ring (95mm, 16.5 Stop) will be able to go onto your Sony FE 200-600mm F/5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens to photograph the solar eclipse.

Q: 4. Are these ND filters good for shooting video as well as photos?

A: Yes, the Ice CO ND Filter Kit (67mm) can be used for both videos and photos. A more popular option would be a variable ND to make the workflow easier.

Q: 5. What is the difference between this and MFR #1089228? Seems like one has a knurled edge and one doesn't - is that it?

A: Both filters are thinner to prevent vignetting on wide angle lenses, but the B+W 67mm MRC Nano Master #806 ND1.8 Filter would offer the knurled edge on the ring as the only difference.

Q: 6. Would this filter be good for shooting the moon and planets? Cut down the moons brightness and glare.

A: The Haida 77mm NanoPro One Million X Edition ND Filter (20 Stop) is a solar filter and it would be too dark for lunar use. A 2 stop filter is recommended for lunar photos: https://bhpho.to/48R3cVJ

Q: 7. Does the 5-stop (Ultra slim) filter allow stacking?

A: Yes, the Specifications state the FotodioX Pro 145mm Ultra Slim ND 1.5 Filter (5-Stop) has 145mm front filter threads which should allow you to connect an additional filter that has 145mm filter threads to the front of the filter.

Q: 8. What is the difference between these "CO" filters and the regular ICE filters? Do the regular filters not have multi-coating as well?

A: The CO filters are mainly easier to clean due to their 8 Layer coating, which the standard Ice ND filters are lacking.

Q: 9. Will this filter create vignette on hasselblad xcd 21mm?

A: Unfortunately, I cannot state for certain as we do not test specific filters on specific lenses for vignetting (to ensure all items we sell are sold in the same condition as they were received by the manufacturer, we do not open new products for testing purposes). As the Singh-Ray 77mm Thin Mor-Slo Solid Neutral Density 3.0 Filter with Front Filter Threads (10 Stops) is a thin filter, it should be a good option for use on the Hasselblad XCD 21mm f/4 Lens and I would recommend it for your usage needs. However, do note that this filter can be returned within 30 days of purchase date for a refund or exchange if it does not work for your usage needs.

Q: 10. Is this compatible with Kase K9 100mm Filter Holder (BH #KAK9 MFR #K9)? If not, is there any similar filter compatible?

A: It won't fit. Kase K9 100mm Filter Holder (BH #KAK9) accepts 100mm wide 2mm thick filters like this one: Ice 100 x 100mm ND100000 Solid Neutral Density 5.0 Filter (16.5-Stop) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1423187-REG/ice_ice_100k_100_100x100mm_4x4_square_nd100000_filter.html

[0.45 lb] Hi,

Purchased in late 2020 for Sigma 105mm 1.4 (Nikon).

This ND filter is really good because it does not create any color cast. The ND allows me to use the lens at f1.4 without overexposing the shadows (while using my strobes). It is a great ND filter, more neutral than a few others I purchased for a 85mm 1.8.

High recommendations.

[0.45 lb] I bought this filter (95mm) to shoot the August 2017 eclipse. It worked perfectly. This filter, when shot in AWB (let camera choose white balance) does not add any color cast to the image. The images will be white, with no noticeable orange cast. you can always add an orange cast in post processing if desired.

I was very happy with my images in 2017 and plan to use this filter again for the upcoming April 2024 eclipse.

[0.45 lb] The quality of these filters is outstanding. While they are somewhat expensive, they are worth the price point. The one thing I fail to understand is with the attention to quality and detail the weak link is the installation of the light leak gasket that is included with the filter. It is a challenge to affix it to the filter and have had difficulty with every filter I have from them. I don't know why Formatt-Hitech does not place it on the filter as part of the manufacturing process.
