Exhibiting improved clarity, flatness, and reduced reflectivity, the 100 x 100mm Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND Filter for Solar Photographyfrom Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND Filter for Solar Photographyis a neutral density filter providing a 6-stop reduction in exposure. This 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you can control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Designed using inspiration from their cine Firecrest filters, this Ultra line of filters receives an additional lapping and polishing process during production to ensure lower reflectivity and improved clarity and sharpness.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promotes nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the SCHOTT Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order to maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. It measures 3.9 x 3.9" / 100 x 100mm and is 2mm thick, making it compatible with the Formatt Hitech 100mm Filter Holder.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

The Ultra series of Firecrest filters exhibit greater clarity and have lower reflectivity than the original Firecrest filters. Borrowing from the range of Firecrest cine filters, the Ultra series undergo a secondary lapping and polishing process after the initial polishing and bonding stage. This additional step helps to ensure flatness and consistency for improved image quality.

ND 1.8 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 6-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

It attenuates infrared light as well as visible and UV wavelengths to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistant for greater overall durability.

SCHOTT Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and its 2mm-thick design is compatible with the Formatt Hitech 100mm Filter Holder.

Q: 1. Does it fit Sony 200-600mm lens?

A: The sony 200-600 does take a 95mm filter the Hoya 95mm ProND-100000 Neutral Density 5.0 Solar Filter (16.6 Stops) BH #HOND10000095 • MFR #XPD-95ND100000 will work on the lens

Q: 2. My lens has a 77 mm thread. I'm not sure what the "magnetic adapter ring" is for?

A: Ice 77mm Solar Mc Nd100000 is not a screw in filter. The adapter ring screws into the 77 mm thread and the ND filter will magnetically attach to the ring.

Q: 3. Will it fit Sony 200-600mm lens? Thx

A: Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens has a 95mm front thread wich will fit perfectly with Ice Magco Solar ND100000 ND Filter with Magnetic Adapter Ring (95mm, 16.5 Stop).

Q: 4. does this work for the tokina 16-28mm pro system?

A: This filter will not work with a Tokina 16-28mm pro. We do have special filter holders for that lens. https://bhpho.to/2WkRXmt

Q: 5. Can one place the 77 mm Hoya CPD-77ND100000 ND filter over a 77mm Hoya UV filter, and in so doing protect the sensor further from UV? There may be slight vignetting, but if shooting an eclipse that will not matter.

A: Yes you could do this. That way you protect the Sensor more. That shouldn't be an issue. You just might have a slight Vignette.

Q: 6. Will this filter work with the NiSi 150mm holder?

A: Yes the LEE Filters 150 x 150mm SW150 Solar Stopper will fit in a Nisi 150mm holder.

Q: 7. Does The Hoya XPD-77ND100000 ND Filter also filter UV and IR, or does it act only on visible light?

A: It is not a UV or IR filter. It is just neutral density.

Q: 8. What color will the sun appear through this filter?

A: The last Image in the Photo's of this Filter show's what the Sun looks like through this Filter.

Q: 9. Will you need to remove this filter during the total eclipse to see & photograph anything?

A: Yes, solar filters are designed for shooting the entire sun and partial eclipse phases. You will need to remove the filter during totality to photograph the corona. If you also want to photograph Bailey's beads and the diamond ring effect, you will want to remove the filter about 20-30 seconds before totality begins and replace it about 20-30 seconds after totality ends. This will not damage your camera equipment. Another answer implied that it is safe to view the eclipse through your camera's optical viewfinder with this filter in place, but that is NOT the case. This filter is NOT certified for visual observation. Place a viewfinder cover or a piece of tape over your optical viewfinder as a precaution, and only use live view to focus and compose your frames.

Q: 10. Is this filter ISO certfied?

A: If by ISO certified, you mean is it certified for visual (eyeball) use - not to my knowledge. This filter is intended for photo use only. For visual observation, use a filter intended for direct visual observation of the sun. I'm using the Hoya filter on a Canon PowerShot SX50 for taking photos of the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun using the LCD viewfinder. Don't use the optical viewfinder! Safe visual solar filters are readily available and cheap.
