Exhibiting improved clarity, flatness, and reduced reflectivity, the 100 x 150mm Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Soft Edge ND Filter 100x150mm 1-Stopfrom Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Soft Edge ND Filter 100x150mm 1-Stophelps to balance the overall exposure within a high-contrast scene. Ideal for situations involving both bright and dark areas, such as an open sky and shadowed foreground, half of the filter has 0.3 neutral density and the other half is clear, with a soft-edged transition between the two that is ideally suited for use with medium and wide-angle lenses or when there is an uneven, undulating horizon. By reducing the exposure in selective areas, you are able to balance the overall exposure of the scene in order to gain detail in both bright and dark areas.

Designed using inspiration from their cine Firecrest filters, these Ultra filters receive an additional lapping and polishing process during production to ensure lower reflectivity and improved clarity and sharpness. This filter has also been optimized for use with digital sensors and promotes nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multi-coating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order to maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. It measures 100 x 150mm and is 2mm thick, making it compatible with the Formatt-Hitech 100mm Filter Holder.

The Ultra Firecrest series filters exhibit greater clarity and have lower reflectivity than the original Firecrest filters. Borrowing from the range of Firecrest cine filters, the Ultra series filters undergo a secondary lapping and polishing process after the initial polishing and bonding stage. This additional step helps to ensure flatness and consistency for improved image quality.

Graduated ND 0.3 filter for darkening skies and other bright areas of the image.

Provides a 1-stop reduction in light in selective areas.

Soft-edge transition is ideal for circumstances there is not a distinct line of separation between the bright and dark zones of the image.

Vertical orientation filter's line of transition runs parallel to the short side of the filter.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistant for greater overall durability.

Schott Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and its 2mm-thick design is compatible with the Formatt-Hitech 100mm Filter Holder.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this fit my Leica Q? I saw someone say that it wouldnt fit the leica 28mm lens.

A: Yes, the Leica Q takes a 49mm filter, so this will fit.

Q: 2. What is the thread pitch for this product 60 X .75? Are these external threads? Thanks

A: The B+W 60mm 0.6 ND MRC 102M Filter has a 0.75mm pitch which is standard for many filters.

Q: 3. Can I stack another 58mm filter on top of this one?

A: The Bower 58mm Variable Neutral Density Filter has a 62mm front threading. If you want to stack another filter in the front it would need to be a 62mm filter. Alternatively you can put the other 58mm filter in bottom and this one on top. Always be careful to avoid vignetting when stacking filters.

Q: 4. Am I right to assume that a 58mm lens cap would fit over this filter?

A: Yes, technically a 58mm lens cap should fit. But filters like these can be wider. They essentially are made up of two polarizing filters sandwiched together. So they can be a bit wider because of that.

Q: 5. Hello. I am looking to reduce my f-stop during panning shots. I do Motorsport photography and typically pan anywhere from 1/30th to 1/320. In that range, I’ve been up to f-18. I use the 300 f2.8 with both TC’s with exceptional results. My concern/question is, will this negatively affect or impact the AF system? Even though I already get a nice motion blur with panning techniques, I’d like to reduce the f-stop further to add some additional blurring in the out of focus areas. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks.

A: This should not effect the focusing system much. If you were using anything 6-stop or more, the you may see varying results, but because it is only a 3-stop, you would be more than fine.

Q: 6. Does this filter fit the Sony 24-70mm G-Master lens?

A: No, this is too small. You would need the Hoya 82mm ND (NDX8) 0.9 Filter (3-Stop) (http://bhpho.to/2aYyUXX) for the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM.

Q: 7. mounted on metal or plastic?

A: Metal

Q: 8. What lens caps fit?

A: this should work , ZEISS 86mm Front Lens Cap B&H # ZEFLC86

Q: 9. Will this vignette with 7.5mm ultrawide Laowa lens?

A: You will get some vignetting when using this filter on the 7.5 but can be corrected in post.

Q: 10. Does this filter have hard stops?

A: Not for the intermediary stops.

[7.4 x 5.7 x 1"] I put these firecrest NDs head to head with PolarPros NDs and these are slightly more sharp and higher quality than polar pros. Just holding these in your hand you can feel the quality of the build. Theyre a breeze taking them on and off of the lens as well. Worth the top dollar they are.

[Glass] I've been using NDs and specifically Firecrest for about 6 months now including 15 days solid of landscape work in Ireland. Very high quality, easy to work with. I use grads and also combine in computer. I find using grads still helps even with my high dynamic range Nikon D810 and Pentax 645Z. I bought the 5 stop soft grad because i regularly found myself using a 3 stop soft and a 2 stop hard. I wanted flexibility to have it all on one filter, be soft and add the 2 stop hard if I wanted. And in my 2 slot holder also use a Full ND or polarizer. Has worked great so far

[0.5 lb] I love this filter. Last week in Big Sur I used it every day for landscape / seascape shots. The sun was shining brightly the entire week, and without this (and another 0.6 filter attached) I never could've got the shots I did - would've had to shoot twice and blend in post. One suggestion - go with this or a 0.9, whether Hard Edge or Soft. I find the 0.6 (1/3 stop) insufficient for bright sunlight. Many shots I used both together. Another suggestion: try using Live View if your cam has it. It can make positioning the filter much easier, provided you're working off a tripod. You are using your tripod aren't you?!

[7.4 x 5.7 x 1"] I use this in a Cokin P series holder on a Canon 16-35 f4 L and occasionally on a 100-400 II L and it works great. I modified the holder by gluing a soft gasket made out of a black microfiber lens cleaning cloth along the top and bottom rims to prevent light leaks and it works great. Also, since the Cokin holder can hold 2 filters and this makes it a little too thick, I used heavy duty wire cutters to remove the outer filter slot. All works great and images shot through this filter are snappy with no appreciable loss of contrast or sharpness. My only gripe is that the case is on the big side. Overall, a good price for a great filter.

[0.5 lb] For this review of my ND 3.0 filter, 10 stop, I used a tripod, the Nikon MC- 36A remote and the ND Expert Pro app. This was my very first imaging with this filter. What I was looking to see the effect of the filter and what, if any was there a shift in color. As you can see, the color shift was minor. This is a pricey filter, however, it performed as expected.

[0.5 lb] I use this product in the hazy skies of Washington, DC which are often. The fine quality of the filter and the 4 stops of darkness are great for dakening the skies and maintianing good optics. Best for use when clouds are visible. Definitely worth the money.

[7.4 x 5.7 x 1"] I bought this filter (95mm) to shoot the August 2017 eclipse. It worked perfectly. This filter, when shot in AWB (let camera choose white balance) does not add any color cast to the image. The images will be white, with no noticeable orange cast. you can always add an orange cast in post processing if desired.

I was very happy with my images in 2017 and plan to use this filter again for the upcoming April 2024 eclipse.

[Glass] This filter is a great use in landscape photography to help controlling situations with a high contrast latitude. Hitech filters are as good as other expensive filters and i didnt notice at this point any colour cast.

[7.4 x 5.7 x 1"] The quality of these filters is outstanding. While they are somewhat expensive, they are worth the price point. The one thing I fail to understand is with the attention to quality and detail the weak link is the installation of the light leak gasket that is included with the filter. It is a challenge to affix it to the filter and have had difficulty with every filter I have from them. I don't know why Formatt-Hitech does not place it on the filter as part of the manufacturing process.
