Exhibiting improved clarity, flatness, and reduced reflectivity, the 100 x 150mm Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Soft Edge ND Filter 100x150mm 5-Stopfrom Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Soft Edge ND Filter 100x150mm 5-Stophelps to balance the overall exposure within a high-contrast scene. Ideal for situations involving both bright and dark areas, such as an open sky and shadowed foreground, half of the filter has 1.5 neutral density and the other half is clear, with a soft-edged transition between the two that is ideally suited for use with medium and wide-angle lenses or when there is an uneven, undulating horizon. By reducing the exposure in selective areas, you are able to balance the overall exposure of the scene in order to gain detail in both bright and dark areas.

Designed using inspiration from their cine Firecrest filters, these Ultra filters receive an additional lapping and polishing process during production to ensure lower reflectivity and improved clarity and sharpness. This filter has also been optimized for use with digital sensors and promotes nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multi-coating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order to maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. It measures 100 x 150mm and is 2mm thick, making it compatible with the Formatt-Hitech 100mm Filter Holder.

The Ultra Firecrest series filters exhibit greater clarity and have lower reflectivity than the original Firecrest filters. Borrowing from the range of Firecrest cine filters, the Ultra series filters undergo a secondary lapping and polishing process after the initial polishing and bonding stage. This additional step helps to ensure flatness and consistency for improved image quality.

Graduated ND 1.5 filter for darkening skies and other bright areas of the image.

Provides a 5-stop reduction in light in selective areas.

Soft-edge transition is ideal for circumstances there is not a distinct line of separation between the bright and dark zones of the image.

Vertical orientation filter's line of transition runs parallel to the short side of the filter.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistant for greater overall durability.

Schott Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and its 2mm-thick design is compatible with the Formatt-Hitech 100mm Filter Holder.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. is this compatible with a 50mm sony lens?

A: Yes it is.

Q: 2. Does this filter fit the Sony 24-70mm G-Master lens?

A: No, this is too small. You would need the Hoya 82mm ND (NDX8) 0.9 Filter (3-Stop) (http://bhpho.to/2aYyUXX) for the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM.

Q: 3. What's the weight of the filter Could it be used instead of the balancing ring needed for the X5S?(drone proposes).

A: Unfortunately we are not able to weigh products here, and it is not a provided specification from the manufacturer. It is recommended you contact the manufacturer for any more in-depth specifications such as this. But it is our guess that it would work very similarly to a balancing ring, though it is not an exact measurement.

Q: 4. Anyone know if this would vignette on a 16mm on full frame? I primarily shoot a Nikon 16-35 on a D850.

A: This will not vignette on 16-35mm if you do not stack it over UV filter

Q: 5. Hi Do you have the B+W series 7 0.9 ND filter?

A: The nearest option would this 2 stop version: https://bhpho.to/3x5JhyN Series size filters are only made for older lenses so the filter selection will be rather limited.

Q: 6. I have a vivitar 0.43x wide angle filter that accepts 62mm filter threads. I'm considering getting this Bower 62mm Variable ND filter and a 58-62 step up ring so I can use it on both the wide angle filter and my Canon G40's lens. My question is; would there be any amount of vignetting that would render the use of the ND filter on the wide angle filter pointless? How much of a vignette should I expect?

A: I can confirm what Roland said, this filter becomes unusable at its maximum/darkest setting. Roll it back just a bit and it's fine, but do keep that in mind.

Q: 7. How does this attach to the phone? I have a clip on ND I'm not happy with since it has light leaking in.

A: The Kase ND64 6-Stop ND Filter for Smartphones BH #KA1117130001 would come with a stick on L-Shaped Magnetic Adapter that is semi-permanent adhesive.

Q: 8. How much does the filter weigh?

A: I don't have the means to weigh the filter directly. I does not weigh more than any other of the B&W filters in this particular mount. You can go to the manufacturer website for this exact product and ask the weight question. B&W Photo does not permit inserting outside links, so do a Google Search on Schneider Optics, once on the website, copy and paste the manufacturer's part number that B&H Photo includes, that will give you the specifics on this product. Then you will have links to ask the weight question of an associate. I hope this helps.

Q: 9. I already bought 3 stop filter of this. Can you help me where I can get 6 stop filter?

A: Here is the link for a high quality 77mm 6 stop filter by Hoya. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1012350-REG/hoya_xpd_77nd64_77mm_pro_nd_64x.html

Q: 10. mounted on metal or plastic?

A: Metal

[0.5 lb] I am a newbie to ND photography and while researching ND filters so many photographers I respected recommended the Firecrest Ultra...and I am very glad I listened to them. I plan on buying the less dense ones too.

[7.5 x 5.5 x 1"] For this review of my ND 3.0 filter, 10 stop, I used a tripod, the Nikon MC- 36A remote and the ND Expert Pro app. This was my very first imaging with this filter. What I was looking to see the effect of the filter and what, if any was there a shift in color. As you can see, the color shift was minor. This is a pricey filter, however, it performed as expected.

[0.5 lb] I bought this filter (95mm) to shoot the August 2017 eclipse. It worked perfectly. This filter, when shot in AWB (let camera choose white balance) does not add any color cast to the image. The images will be white, with no noticeable orange cast. you can always add an orange cast in post processing if desired.

I was very happy with my images in 2017 and plan to use this filter again for the upcoming April 2024 eclipse.

[0.5 lb] I use this in a Cokin P series holder on a Canon 16-35 f4 L and occasionally on a 100-400 II L and it works great. I modified the holder by gluing a soft gasket made out of a black microfiber lens cleaning cloth along the top and bottom rims to prevent light leaks and it works great. Also, since the Cokin holder can hold 2 filters and this makes it a little too thick, I used heavy duty wire cutters to remove the outer filter slot. All works great and images shot through this filter are snappy with no appreciable loss of contrast or sharpness. My only gripe is that the case is on the big side. Overall, a good price for a great filter.

[7.5 x 5.5 x 1"] I was really pleased with the images that I have been able to create with this filter. As soon as I got it I took it to the coast and tried a bunch of long exposure shots at sunset. When I got the images onto my PC I was very happy to see that I could not tell which images I had used the filter on by looking at the colors. The colors were identical with and without the filter!
