A Tiffen 86mm Deep Blue #47B Filterfrom Tiffen is a deep blue filter that accentuates haze and fog. It is also used in dye transfer printing, for contrast effects and color separation and tricolor work (lightens blue tones).

Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced through a process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in precision aluminum rings.

Q: 1. What size battery does this take

A: The model takes 2 x LR43 1.5V Batteries, which should have been included in the Box. It is for the Compass/Rangefinder.

Q: 6. The product looks and feels great. But I have no idea how to work everything because the generic manual is useless. For example, there IS no center focus wheel, there IS no zoom lever, there ARE no fold down/twist up/pull up eyecups, just standard rubber cups, non-adjustable. So I have no info on how to connect the strap, how to put in the batteries, how to know if there is a zoom, etc. I'll mess with it until I figure it out, but the correct manual would be great. Is there a more comprehensive one on line?

A: I haven't seen any better instructions on line. Just adjust the 2 individual eye cups to your liking and they seem to focus automatically from there. Battery is near right ring finger as you hold the binoculars. Strap holes are near each thumb as you hold the binoculars. Hope this helps.

A: RANGEFINDER IS IN PLACE BUT NOT A PROBLEM, COMPASS IS VERY LOW IN RIGHT SIDE, BEST UNDER $300.00 CLASS

Q: 8. Is there a version of this filter without the knurling around the outside? The knurling prevents me from installing a screw on lens hood on my summilux 35mm. I have an older B+W F PRO that is smooth on the outside edge that the lens hood can fit over but I can't seem to find that model anymore.

[6 x 5.5 x 1"] Back when I shot nothing but film I used Tiffen filters and I'm happy that the quality is still here. There doesn't appear to be any strange diffraction in my shots even way out in the corners like I have found before in economically priced filters. 5

[6 x 5.5 x 1"] Like the odd 1-iron a golfer might bring, a 47a is not the everyday go-to of filters. That said, it emulates ortho film amazingly well, and for certain types of architectural photography, dramatically lightens, if not whitens skies while deeply defining most everything else. For instance, ironwork like the Eiffel Tower, a Ferris wheel, or an old, complicated bridge would become a nearly abstract study in lines with a filter like this. Or, if one wanted images evoking a late 19th Century feel, the ortho rendition would be prefect, especially with a soft focus, Lomographic, or pinhole lens. Shades of Matthew Brady! As for the Tiffen brand, there’s really none better. Never in 40 years of film photography have I heard of quality issues, except for a one-off problem once 20 years ago. They work and cost less, yet made in the USA! While the deep-pocketed Leica or Linhof user may sniff at them, this Mamiya RB photographeur, merely exclaims, “Tsk!”, or even, “Tchah!”, and continues merrily. Buy with great confidence! 5
