The 55mm Tiffen 29 Dark Red Filter 55mmfrom Tiffen 29 Dark Red Filter 55mmis a filter designed to build contrast in black and white photography and separation between tones. In landscape photography, clear skies are darkened and when combined with a polarizer, a very extreme contrast is added to the image. Many forensic photographers use the #29 Red filter as it absorbs blues colors and enhances red. Therefore, the filter aids in finding evidence. Infrared images are also enhanced giving a stronger effect and look by making foliage look white. The red filter is ideal for copying blue prints, since it enhances the lines and is easier to view the image. It has a filter factor of 16.5, so you must increase your exposure by 4 1/3 of a stop to compensate.

Tiffen filters are not dyed, but are manufactured by using ColorCore technology. This process laminates the filter material between two pieces of optical glass and grinds down and polishes the glass. The glass is then mounted to the metal ring, which after that can be screwed onto the lens for the desired effect.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this work with the Wooden Camera Zip Box Pro 4.5in Round Filter Stage?

A: Yes.

Q: 2. So I was just curious does this come with any sort of case?

A: This filter comes in a hard plastic case.

Q: 3. Since you are out of stock on the Tiffen 49mm Cir. Pol., can I use a linear polarizer instead on a mirrorless camera? My recollection is that Cir. Polarizer was developed to compensate for the effect of the mirror on light measurement in the camera, and if so, then shouldn’t be necessary for mirrorless camera.

A: Yes, a linear polarizer will have no effect on metering or autofocus (PDAF or CAF) in a mirrorless camera, which historically would cause metering and autofocus issues in cameras with mirrors or single-translucent lenses (SLTs).

Q: 4. Would this work for my canon EF-M 15-45 mm lens?

A: Yes. The Tiffen #25 Red Filter (49mm) will fit that lens.

Q: 5. What Nm is this filter? 720? 950? thanks!

A: This filter allows zero light to be passed below 580nm, at 700nm is allows 86.5% to pass.

Q: 6. Hello,What is the difference between this product and the Tiffen 82mm Circular Polarizing Filter?Thank you,Nansen

A: A linear polarizer only differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not contain a quarter wave plane that enables use of auto focus and exposure features. It is generally advised to not use linear polarizers with digital cameras, as digital SLRs are dependent on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering.

Q: 7. How does this filter effect skin tones would an orange 23a be better?

A: This filter is designed to effect contrast in B&W photography, it is not recommended for color photography as the entire image would be red.

Q: 8. Does the filter have inner threads so that I can stack filters?

A: Yes, Tiffen #25 Red Filter (40.5mm) has inner and outer threads allowing you to stack filters.

Q: 9. Will a linear polarizer affect the AF system of my Sony a7iii?

A: We recommend a Circular Polarizing filter for autofocus cameras

Q: 10. Will it fit Hasselblad 60B CF 80mm lens thread?

A: Yes, this is a 60 Bay (for bayonet) mount similar to the original Hasselblad filters. The only difference is in the lower quality of materials that make up the filter; other than that, it mounts and functions just the same.

[Aluminum] As the previous reviewer mentioned, this piece of glass is 4mm thick instead of the more standard 2mm thick that filter systems accommodate. If you are using the original Lee 4x4 setup, you can order 4mm side guides (google it) for your kit that will allow to use the thicker glass. I hope this helps someone.

[0.1 lb] Sometimes use this with IR film instead of the much darker IR72 filter. With the 29 filter, I can shoot handheld and not worry about blur or camera shake.
It gives a gentler IR look, but a great look all the same.

[Single Coated] Well you can't beat a Tiffen filter for everyday photography; they're made in the USA, well-built and only disappoint if you buy the wrong type (say a #29 Dark Red like this one, where a #23 Light Red would have served you better).

I've used Tiffen wherever possible for 40 year and have no complaint with them. Unless you are doing super-critical analytical work and must have a super multi-coated, accurate to 1/4-wavelength, type of unit, you can't go wrong with a Tiffen.

[Aluminum] From Ilford FP4 to Rollei Infrared and 80S, this filter adds contrast and separates tones beautifully. Aim your lens at some clouds and prepare to be amazed.
Good quality glass, good quality mount and threads.

[0.1 lb] I have used this filter on a variety of B/W films, to include HIE and 2475. Any Ilford product is a perfect match, as well.

[0.1 lb] Used this on two 35mm films so far: Rollei IR and Ilford FP4+. On the Rollei, it's a subtle IR effect, it brings out the clouds very nicely and provides a great look to the film.
On the FP4, it made an excellent film even better. Nice tonal separations, great clouds.
Best part is I was using Zeiss glass, and this filter is in the same league quality-wise as Zeiss. No loss of image quality, and the filter performs flawlessly.
