The 82mm Tiffen 29 Dark Red Filter 82mmfrom Tiffen 29 Dark Red Filter 82mmis a filter designed to build contrast in black and white photography and separation between tones. In landscape photography, clear skies are darkened and when combined with a polarizer, a very extreme contrast is added to the image. Many forensic photographers use the #29 Red filter as it absorbs blues colors and enhances red. Therefore, the filter aids in finding evidence. Infrared images are also enhanced giving a stronger effect and look by making foliage look white. The red filter is ideal for copying blue prints, since it enhances the lines and is easier to view the image. It has a filter factor of 16.5, so you must increase your exposure by 4 1/3 of a stop to compensate.

Tiffen filters are not dyed, but are manufactured by using ColorCore technology. This process laminates the filter material between two pieces of optical glass and grinds down and polishes the glass. The glass is then mounted to the metal ring, which after that can be screwed onto the lens for the desired effect.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Filter Factor 2x (1 Stop)?! According to Ansel a #61 Green has a Filter Factor of 12. As also listed on the Kodak specs for same type of filtre. Is this a typo?

A: This filter is 2.5 stops

Q: 2. What is the cut off wavelength of this filter?

A: The 87 begins transmitting just past 700nm .3% and reaches 50% at 800nm and hits a maximum transmission of around 85% at 1200nm

Q: 3. Can you add another 82 filter in front of it? Does it have thread in the front?

A: Yes, this filter has front filter threads and you can add another filter to the front. The only issue would be the potential for vignetting if you are shooting wide angle on a full frame sensor camera when stacking filters.

Q: 4. Is there a difference between this & ones being called "black pro mist"?

A: Black Pro Mist filters have a more subtle effect compared to a regular Pro Mist filter.

Q: 5. Can this be use in combination with the Tiffen Digital Diffusion FX?

A: Being that this filter has front threads measuring 82mm, you can stack a Tiffen Digital Diffusion FX Filter on top. However, vignetting may occur if the lens has a wide angle focal length.

Q: 6. Just gotten the 72mm Tiffin ND filters. Was not able to use my 72mm Nikon Lens cap & also wasn't able to attached the 72mm Sensei wide angle lens hood. Kindly please advice what size Nikon Lens cap & sensei lens hood should be use instead.

A: The Tiffen VND filters have limited front filter threads to avoid vignetting. You will not be able to use a traditional lens cap on this filter, we recommend sourcing a 3rd party slip on lens cap or removing the filter and placing it back in its protective pouch when not in use. The filter rings are larger and wider than a traditional filter (necessary in the construction of a VND), this prevents most lens hoods from being used as well.

Q: 7. Can this also be used to reduce light pollution in astrophotography, like it's done with the Hoya?

A: Sorry for the delay, found a hint of your question in the Spam-folder of GMX online today, 2016-06-27.Yes it can be used for reducing light pollution, too, if your environment lights are in the same range asthe filter.Regards, Chris

Q: 8. Does it has IR cut?

A: Unfortunately, this filter does not offer IR cut.

Q: 9. Hi. Can this filter be used in combination with IR sensitive film (like Rollei Infrared or Ilford sfx)? I see that some filters are described as particularly useful for infrared photography, but not this one. It seems to be the only 30.5 mm dark red filter in stock though, so thought I might as well ask. Thanks in advance!

A: Infrared film, if shot without filters, looks like normal black & white film. That is because regular light overpowers the IR. So you need filters that are IR friendly. In this instance, you could use this Heliopan 30.5mm #29 Dark Red Filter with Ilford. According to Ilford, When used with a deep red filter, SFX 200 renders blue skies almost black and green vegetation almost white to create a stunning infra-red look to your shots. However, according to Rollei: Please Note: To achieve strong Infrared (IR) effects we recommend exposing the film at a maximum of ISO 25 and using an R72 dark red infrared filter or deeper infrared filter. Standard Red 25A filters are not recommended. Individualized exposure testing is necessary to realize optimal results. Here is the R72 IR by LEE Filters 4 x 4 Infrared (87C) Polyester Filter B&H # LE87C44 which is a gel, not glass or resin. You cut and tape it to the lens. Here is a list of all 30.5mm IR filters we have. https://bhpho.to/2mo9aYU. Here is a site that lists other possible filters for IR film. https://bit.ly/2LjLwYb

Q: 10. How can i buy it

A: You can place an order for this filter online at the product page--it's a special order that takes 2-4 weeks for delivery.

[Glass] From Ilford FP4 to Rollei Infrared and 80S, this filter adds contrast and separates tones beautifully. Aim your lens at some clouds and prepare to be amazed.
Good quality glass, good quality mount and threads.

[Aluminum] I love the 23A Red Filter from Tiffen. It has allowed me to be more creative with my B&W Photography with the ability to incorporate the effects of a typical Red Filter in a minimised way to have a subtle change in tonality but more pro ounces than an Orange Filter. I highly recommend the product.

[Aluminum] I have a LeicaQ2 and I use this lens on any outdoor shooting. The red filter provides a great tint overall.

[Aluminum] Sometimes use this with IR film instead of the much darker IR72 filter. With the 29 filter, I can shoot handheld and not worry about blur or camera shake.
It gives a gentler IR look, but a great look all the same.

[Glass] I have used this filter on a variety of B/W films, to include HIE and 2475. Any Ilford product is a perfect match, as well.

[0.195 lb] Well you can't beat a Tiffen filter for everyday photography; they're made in the USA, well-built and only disappoint if you buy the wrong type (say a #29 Dark Red like this one, where a #23 Light Red would have served you better).

I've used Tiffen wherever possible for 40 year and have no complaint with them. Unless you are doing super-critical analytical work and must have a super multi-coated, accurate to 1/4-wavelength, type of unit, you can't go wrong with a Tiffen.
