The RRS BPC-16 Microball Panning Basefrom RRS BPC-16 Microball Panning Baseis a 4.4 oz compact and portable ball head that has a 5 lb weight capacity, which makes it suitable for small DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, or other small accessories used for photographic or video use. Moreover, the integrated screw knob locks the Arca-type compatible clamp down while the second locking wheel, which surrounds the first knob, enables the head to rotate a full 360°. Meanwhile, at the top of the stem, the quick release lever disengages to allow movement on the ball, and the cut notch at the bottom of the head allows it to be placed at a 90° angle.

The 2" tall Microball is constructed using 6061-T6 aluminum with steel components. Both metals have a durable finish. Namely, the aluminum has a type II black anodized finish while the steel components are ferritic nitrocarburized, which protect the surfaces from scuffs and oxidation. At the bottom of the stem, a 1/4"-20 female threaded mount is available.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this compatible and can It be mounted on a RRS BH-30 ballhead?

A: Yes, the Really Right Stuff ARC-LR Lever-Release Clamp with Adjustable RRS-Lock will work with the RRS BH-30 ballhead.

Q: 2. Is there any way of attaching this to a tripod to take landscape shots for stitching together as a panorama?

A: We're afraid not. The underside of this unit does not offer threadings to attach it to a tripod. This is meant to be put on surface only.

Q: 3. Is this compatible with the Sirui W-2204 tripod, and Manfrotto MVH500AH video fluid head?

A: While the Manfrotto MVH500AH head can fit on the top of the Kirk TLB-1, the base would be too wide to sit flush with the base on the Sirui W-2204.

Q: 4. Is this leveling base compatible with the Manfrotto 608 Fluid head?

A: Yes the Manfrotto 608 Fluid Head is compatible with this leveling base.

Q: 5. Are the four holes in the top plate suitable for grub screws or some other item to hold the tripod head in place (to keep it from rotating)?

A: No, those holes are for the downward screws that attach the black part to the silver base.

Q: 6. I was tossing up between this and the BC-18. I find the BPC-16 more appealing due to the ability to pan and rotate it 90 degrees. But I read a review that said in practice the 90 degree rotation does not work on larger cameras as the small size of the ballhead does not leave enough room for the camera to rotate. The tripod body get in the road. He recommends the BC-18 as a much better ballhead. I was interested whether others have had difficulty in rotating the head 90 degrees to portrait mode?

A: The BPC-16 can only hold up to 5 lbs, so using it with a larger camera may cause some issues with rotating the head to portrait mode. This would make the BC-18 a better head if you don't need the panning function and are using a heavier camera.

Q: 7. What is the top threaded connection where the head or camera would be attached?

A: This unit has a 3/8"-16 for attaching a tripod head. It would not be directly compatible with most cameras.

Q: 8. One reviewer noted that pins were NOT included, why are the pins not included?

A: You can change the position of the clamp 90 degrees by simply unscrewing the center bolt and repositioning the lock pins. Extremely easy to use, no instructions needed.

Q: 9. Can the quick release clamp be replaced by the Sunwayfoto DDC-60L Screw-Knob Dovetail Clamp? Is the DDC-60L longer than the clamp included here?

A: Yes . The length will be approximately the same

Q: 10. Visual Echoes panning plate is of which country

A: The Visual Echoes Panning Plate is produced in the United States.

[Ball Head] I use it for backpacking. It works with my Sony A6000 camera. High quality product and super light.

[+90° to 0°] I had originally ordered a RRS multi-clamp kit with the BH-25, knowing that I could use that head on both a table-top tripod and the multi-clamp, however, I should have not purchased the BH-25. Not that there is anything wrong with the BH-25, I'll probably find a use for it down the road, but I realized that there was no real panning on it. The BPC-16, however, has a built in panning mechanism and is much smaller and lighter. I think it may even hold more weight. It's smooth and easy to operate and is a perfect compliment to my RRS table-top tripod, multi-clamp, and cell-phone L bracket.

[+90° to 0°] This has become my favorite hiking and backpacking ballhead.  The lightest and most functional one I have ever used.  RRS makes incredibly durable and well-engineered gear, and this is no exception.  Most of my RRS gear is built for durability, but not designed to be lightweight.  The BPC-16 is that rare confluence of RRS-toughness and engineered perfection, coupled with a form factor that enables me to easily carry it on week long trips in the mountains.  The dual function knurled knob that clamps and allows panning is very clever and easy to use.  I highly recommend this to those that need something of this weight and function.  I am using with an A7Riii.

[Ball Head] This one is perfect for a mirrorless travel set-up. This one can hold my A9 and Sigma 105/1.4 (my heaviest set-up) steady even off axis. For travel, anything else should be good. The ability to pan should not be underestimated for a quick pano or to correct the framing side-to-side when the set-up is already leveled. I have an FML light ball head that panning and clamping use the same knob, and its not as easy to use. I have used lever clamp before and I dont like the fact that I need to put in a lot more force to close it down. This lever is smooth throughout and easy to find the right clamping force to move the camera and lens with one hand. I didnt notice any drooping like a regular ball head on this one. The one thing I wish is that it has a 3/8 hole instead.

[Ball Head] If you find one, grab it. Great gear.

[Ball Head] i needed a panning base to replace the leveling head on my tripod. i'm a beginning astrophotographer (maybe) and needed to replace the leveling head on my tripod. i purchased a goto mount from B&H and was warned by the mount mfg not to use leveling heads (too easy to grab the wrong lever in the dark of night and have the entire top heavy assembly (mount/camera/astrograph) end up on the ground. this panning base is exactly the right accessory to allow me to level my tripod but still make coarse azimuth adjustments prior to polar alignment without having to reposition the tripod legs. the product is well made and seems very durable.

[+90° to 0°] I needed a panning base that can withstand heavy weights. This met my criteria. The right size diameter and can withstand heavy weights. Using it with my iOptron Skyguider Pro.

[Ball Head] I have been looking for a rugged and lightweight ball head for a long time. One that is simple to use, with and without gloves. One that has simple and intuitive controls. One that is really well machined from high-quality metals. My search is over. This little guy is so well designed and easy to use that it just gets out of your way. The lever lock for the ball head provides varying degrees of tension on the ball depending on its placement. Swing the lever all the way out, and the head moves freely. Push the lever in just a little, and head moves with the slightest amount of tension. Move the lever in more, and adjusting the head requires a fair amount of effort. When the lever is fully locked (there's a detent), the head has zero movement or drift. The 5 lb load capacity seems conservative. I have this head mounted on Sirui T-24x carbon fiber legs it has been great. Total weight of the legs and head is 1lb 14.5 oz and is a great set up for backpacking and travel.

[Ball Head] Well made and sturdy. When coupled with a PMG GT2 Tomahawk this provides 95% of gimbal function at a fraction of the weight. PMG should consider bundling similar or building the functionality in.

[Ball Head] I own many RRS larger heads which I love , but with the love comes carrying them. I'm a big fan of the clasp to easy change mounts so I do miss it I switch to iPhone run and gun shooting from pro stuff (please don't judge ). This is really perfect for this function. Tiny and light and gold tripods (gitzo carbon) without the legs smacking into so I can leave on and instantly shooting. It's a game changer for me and less weight better I use three with three phones
