Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this Made in Thailand??

A: According to the information we have, our current inventory's Country of Origin is Thailand. Please be aware this can change over the product's production life without notice.

Q: 2. Can I use it on Sony A7R?

A: Yes it works very good

Q: 3. I just got my new lens 35mm 1.4 and I'm trying to shoot a video with lock AF: flexible spot M is not available ?? will you please help ?

A: B&H this is a great idea. I, unfortunately, have the same concern. Can you please include me in answering this question. Thanks, Bonnie

Q: 4. It is true this lens was updated (2018)with a new SSM? also decentering was solved? thanks

A: Yes there was an update to this lens in 2018, it solved a few issues, one of which being the decentering issue.

Q: 5. What are it's advantages over the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM bound with a Metabones IV (witch I do 'already have, with latest firmware) - if we do the abstraction of price and that it's more elegant to not have to do with adapters..)? :Is the Bokhe and softer f1.4 til f2.8 a real advantage for portraits, has it better 3D effect over the latest Canon ?

A: The main advantage of using this lens over a Canon with an adapter is simply that this is a native Sony E-Mount lens. Adapters are very nice and have come a long way, but they still are not flawless. You will get a perfect performance as far as control of the lens and auto focus when using a native lens. This also happens to be a Zeiss Distagon T* lens, which is a very beautiful and high quality lens.

Q: 6. How hard is it to balance on a Ronin S?

A: Ronin S will stabilize a camera with this lens without any problems

Q: 7. Would this work on an a6300? And is it ideal for astrophotography?

A: This will work on the a6300 and will bring everything possible out of that APS-C sensor. It is of exceptional quality so the big bug-a-boo of astrophotography, coma, should not be an issue. The f/1.4 will give you the light you need without undue loss of sharpness. I would caution that on the a6300 APS-C a 35mm creates approximately a 40° field of view coverage which is some what narrow for astrophotography. If you have a 18mm and need something tighter than this will be a terrific choice.

Q: 8. Can you use this lens on the a6300?

A: Yes, but the a6300 doesn't have image stabilization and this lens doesn't either. I use this lens on an a6500 which does have image stabilization and it works great.

Q: 9. Is the lens barrel metal or plastic?

A: The lens barrel is metal and the focus ring and aperture ring are made of plastic (very substantial stuff). The mechanical quality and build of the lens is only surpassed IMO by Leica summicrons and summiluxes, which means it is very well made. I need more time with this lens to write intelligently about its performance.

Q: 10. What are your thoughts between the Sony Distagon T* FE 35MM f/1.4 [SEL35F14Z] versus Sony - 35mm f/1.8 FE [SEL35F18F]. Money is not an issue but I still can't decide?

A: There is only 2/3 of a stop difference in the maximum apertures of these lenses and they would both be very sharp. One might choose the Sony Distagon T* FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA Lens if they are shooting more video being that the lens offers a de-clicked aperture ring, while someone looking to spend less but needs the low light performance might choose the FE 35mm f/1.8 instead.

[f/1.4] This is the best prime lens that I own. Almost zero distortion, amazing falloff and lovely bokeh. I was attracted to this lens for it's 1.4 aperture and the need for an excellent 50mm focal length portrait lens. I also plan on using this lens for astrophotography for stitching photos. I hear a lot of concerns about the size and weight, but feel that it's sooo worth it for the image quality. Compare the weight with a Sigma 50mm Art lens and you'll realize that good glass will have some heft!

[11, Rounded] 50mm is my favorite focal length. It's very versatile and great for travel, street photography and portraits. The images I get from this lens is truly amazing with very good sharpness throughout the frame, especially the center, even when shot wide open. CA is controlled well, distortion is almost non-existent and while there is obvious vignetting at f/1.4, it doesn't bother because it's correctable in Lightroom.

The build quality is amazing. I love the aperture control ring that Sony has been adding with their current lenses and the focusing ring is super smooth. The AF/MF switch is such a welcomed addition as well.

Overall, if money is no object, and you're looking for a bokehlicious lens with excellent light-gathering capability, this is the way to go. Albeit it's more expensive and larger than both the 50mm f1.8 and 55mm f1.8, it's really the best native 50mm lens for the FE mount I have used to date. It's permanently affixed on to my A7II.

[47°] It's big, the biggest prime in my FE lineup (ok 90mm macro is longer...) It's heavy... I think it's the heaviest 50mm across any mirrorless system (though I suspect the Leica SL will be heavier), and I believe only lighter then the DSLR Sigma Art. Thought it's distributed well. Its AF is slow-er then the next best choice, the 55mm F1.8. $1,500 for a 50... ouch Yet, it's... Sharp. Amazingly sharp wide open. The mic has been dropped here, nothing more to de debate. Handling... I already really like the 35mm 1.4... this ones pretty much identical and even better with the addition of the focus mode switch on the lens and an even fatter barrel. FBW implementation in MF (dampening, response, accuracy) is on a whole other usability level vs. 55mm. Those aspherical elements are absolutely fantastic - NO ONION RINGS! NADA! So yeah, bokeh lovers rejoice! Boooooooooookeeeeehhhhhhh... After using it extensively for 2 months it's my fav prime at the moment.

[0.15x] Let me start out by saying that this lens is quite large and for that reason alone may not be the right fit for many people. But if you are looking to get the most out of your Sony a7rii, this lens has to be the definitive statement in that area. If there is a better option for this camera, it would be difficult for it to be better. I just couldn't imagine how my camera could give me more pleasure than I already had, but I have been shooting Leica lenses that are phenomenal with this camera but they are all manual lenses. Dying to try the auto focus adapter that is now available for these lenses but maybe not, because I have a winner with this planar t lens. The first thing I noticed right away is that it couples so well with the Sony that things I didn't realize I was giving up , I noticed right away. The color balance changes immediately to this rich palette of subtle colors that seems to be just right. It gets that balance correct. Coupled with the stabilizer system and the eye focus feature which I am now using with this lens, my street shots are clear, focused like a bell, and magnificently balanced in color. I love this lens and aside from its size, I'm not absolutely convinced it is perfect for the streets but I am really enjoying it. And I am happy with the results. Hats off to the marriage of Zeiss and Sony with this magnificent marriage. They got it right, and you'll be happy with this choice to get the most out of your Sony camera. Buy this lens first. I suspect you'll be buying more fixed length versions in the end as I surely will.

[47°] This is one of the most perfect, if not THE most perfect lens I've ever used. By any metric, it's just amazing. So sharp that my photos look like they came from a medium format camera. Wonderful contrast, color and 'pop.' Beautiful roll-off from the in focus areas to the out of focus ones. Virtually total lack of any chromatic aberration. And in terms of the industrial design, although it's a hefty lens, it feels nice in the hand and exudes quality.

[Autofocus] Ever since my purchase (January this year), it has become the Best companion in every photo sessions. Portrait/studio, as well as outside and street shots are just stunning!! Light intake is phenomenal, extremely sharp and well balanced. Feels good (with exception of its a bit heavy weight) and looks lovely. I use it with A7II body, ..and it enhances the camera body/look(!). (Do get lots of compliments!) Premium quality. ..and yes, 11 blade makes stunning bokeh.

[f/1.4] 50mm is my favorite focal length and just like the 35mm, it's great for travel, street photography and portraits, but with better subject separation. The images I get from this lens is truly amazing with very good sharpness throughout the frame even when shot wide-open. CA is controlled well, distortion is almost non-existent and while there is obvious vignetting at f/1.4, it doesn't bother me at all and it's correctable in Lightroom. The build quality is amazing. I love the aperture control ring that Sony has been adding with their current lenses and the focusing ring is super smooth. Overall, if money is no object, and you're looking for a bokehlicious lens with excellent light-gathering capability, this is the way to go.
