Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the focus ring on this lens throwable in the sense that it will give you some play from one focal point to the next? I have the Sony G 18-105 lens for my FS5 and the manual focus is terrible as it shifts from one focal plane to the next with very little movement. I'm going to be using this a a video lens so I need an old-school style of focus ring that isn't servo-based.

A: Not as well as what you would get from a lens that was designed for manual focusing. The 55/1.8 is really an outstanding lens, but designed for autofocusing. It's OK for manual focusing if you're using focus peaking, and plenty of time to make delicate little adjustments with the focus ring. But for your use case, which is video, I would suggest a lens like the Loxia 50mm f/2. There are also many excellent third party 50mm f/1.4 manual focus lenses that you could use with the Sony E-mount via adapters, if shallow DoF is important.

Q: 2. Is this a good lens to use for headshots?

A: My friend Matt Watkins is a pro, Hassalblad $40,000 Camera, his 50mm is $9,500. He is a devils advocate and won't let you win an argument for any reason. But when he used my A7 with the 55 1.5, he said, I cannot believe this, how much? Under a grand, almost fell down. Have been taking pics since 14 in 1982. never owned any lens that can do this. Just don't take pics of your wife unless she is comfortable with every imperfection in her face, this lens shows you everything. You simply have to buy it, that's all.

Q: 3. Do you notice any noise on the blades when focusing at f/8 (A mode, continuous) using it with A6000?

A: When the blades initially begin to move there is a little noise, but nothing pronounced. I experimented with additional modes and found that the blades produced varying levels of this noise as they moved to focus.

Q: 4. Why no OSS on this lens?

A: There is no stabilization in this lens because the stabilization would be in the camera like in the Sony A7.

Q: 5. Is this lens compatible with Sony 99

A: No. Need to use full-frame A-mount lenses.

Q: 6. When this lens is used on a6000, I saw the SteadyShot cannot be turned on. Is this normal?

A: No- something is not working or you are not setting the correct function. You have to set the focal length for stabilization first pressing the rear wheel button and then dialing in the focal length.

Q: 7. Is this lens compatible with Sony A6300?

A: Yes. The lens is compatible with full frame (Sony a7 series) and crop frame sensor (Sony A6000 & A6300). On the A6300, this lens is equivalent to 83mm. Sharp lens - one of the better lens for Sony mirrorless cameras.

Q: 8. Does the lens hood attach to the front in reverse?

A: Yes, you can connect the Sony ALC-SH131 Lens Hood included with the Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Lens on reverse.

Q: 9. is this lens image stabilized?

A: The Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Lens does not have image stabilization.

Q: 10. Is any difference that the lenses come with free filter but the same the price

A: The lenses are exactly the same. We offer one kit with a free filter so you get more for your money. Besides, who doesn't like free stuff?

[f/1.8] I have primarily used the lens for landscape work and some portraits. I bought this lens to compliment the 35 FE as well; I needed something longer and the 55mm fit perfect for my needs. I'm using the lens on the Sony A7R and the files are incredibly sharp especially stopped down. It has been coined the Otus lite by some and seeing specs for both I would agree. It's a very sharp lens. I don't worry about getting another stop out of it because I shoot at higher apertures mostly. The focus ring is very sensitive, it's easy to move it out of focus if you're not paying attention but that would be my only gripe. The 35mm is more stiff, which helps keep focus. It's built very well too. I really like the 35mm FE 2.8 because I enjoy the focal length but this lens exceeds another lens I have in terms of sharpness. If something happened to my 55, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

[f/22] I really love this lens. It is the lens that is always on my A7. I rarely use any other lens. It is extremely crisp.

[8 x 4.4 x 4.3"] This lens definitely lived up to its Zeiss name! Superbly sharp across all aperture and from center to edges. The bokeh is very nice and smooth as a 55mm lens and the colors look great.

I actually bought this lens instead of the 35mm and have not regretted it yet.

[8 x 4.4 x 4.3"] I'm an old school photojournalist guy that back in the 80's would never have been caught dead with a 50mm lens of any kind. As I learned to do environmental portraits, especially in tight spaces later on doing corporate work, I discovered the 50 as a great lens for medium portraits and even for sports coverage. I really struggled pulling the trigger on a $1000 50mm lens but I did it and have not regretted the purchase. The 55 Sonnar constantly produces breathtakingly sharp images that even my clients notice. Hitting the zoom button on my A7 and A6000 is a pleasure as it's always shocking to see what kind of resolution you get even at 400%, on a preview image. The lens is not only sharp but also has excellent contrast and makes it easier in post to get the snappy images I like to make. combined with Sony's recent sensors, which are really great, the 55 combo on my A7 is a really nice way to work. I find myself reaching for the 55 on jobs when maybe I shouldn't--finding excuses to use it when another lens might be more appropriate. In short, it's worth the cash and I have no regrets...

[f/1.8] Love the lens!

[f/1.8] I use this lens extensively indoors in low light and for portraits. Therefore it is mostly set to F1.8, where it is tack sharp in the centre and very sharp in the corners. Bokeh is dreamlike and buttery. The lens is light, though a bit larger than I anticipated. Build quality is good, and the focus ring turns smoothly. Auto focus is fast.
