Comprising both length and flexibility, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR Lensfrom Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR Lensis a medium to super telephoto zoom characterized by its advanced optical design, internal teleconverter, and host of handling assets to suit photographing fast-moving subjects. Distinguishing itself among most zooms, this 180-400mm features a built-in 1.4x teleconverter to allow for on-the-fly switching to an effective 252-560mm f/5.6 lens for greater reach. A constant f/4 maximum aperture is also a key feature for realizing consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and for producing shallow depth of field and selective focusing imagery. Complementing these traits is a sophisticated optical design that utilizes eight extra-low dispersion glass elements and one fluorite element to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity. Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to individual elements to reduce flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Balancing the optical merits, this 180-400mm is also characterized by its inclusion of a Vibration Reduction image stabilization system that compensates for four stops of camera shake to enable sharper handheld shooting. A Silent Wave Motor also benefits producing sharp imagery, and affords quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. As a lens intended for use in trying conditions, it is weather-sealed and features a fluorine coating on the front element to resist fingerprints and smudging. Additionally, a removable, rotating tripod collar is included to assist working with a support system and this lens utilizes an electromagnetic diaphragm to ensure consistent exposure stability when shooting at fast continuous speeds.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this 180-400mm lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 270-600mm equivalent focal length range.

The built-in 1.4x teleconverter allows you to instantly extend your reach to 252-560mm (or 378-840mm equivalent with DX cameras) simply by flipping the right-hand switch. Since the teleconverter is integrated within the lens housing, it is optically matched to the lens for improved imaging performance and also fully maintains the lens's weather sealing.

Constant f/4 maximum aperture, without the teleconverter in position, offers consistent illumination throughout the zoom range. When the 1.4x teleconverter is engaged, the maximum aperture is effectively f/5.6.

One fluorite element and eight extra-low dispersion glass elements are incorporated into the optical design to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve notable clarity and color accuracy.

A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for up to four shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens' use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions and a Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Focus range limiter allows you to constrict the focus system to a 19.7' to infinity range for faster focusing performance.

Assignable Function buttons can be used for lens-based activation of AF/AE Lock modes or for switching between different AF Area Modes.

Dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium alloy lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Fluorine-coated front element affords protection to the optical system, resists smudging and fingerprints, and is easier to clean.

A removable tripod collar is included with the lens for well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod. The collar ring also incorporates ball bearings for smooth transitions between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does Nikon make a hard case for this lens? I find it hard to believe that a 12k+ lens comes only with a bag for a case!!!

A: Unfortunately, Nikon does not have a hard case designed for use with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR Lens, B&H # NI1804004E. If you are looking for a hard case for your usage needs, I would recommend the Pelican 1460 Case with Foam (Black), B&H # PE1460FB, as a good option for your usage needs.

Q: 2. Is this a swiss arca mount?

A: It does not have an arca-swiss compatible foot, you would need a separate plate or a new foot like the http://bhpho.to/2bzAM86

Q: 3. Is this a true addition or an expensive replacement to the Nikon 200-400 F4?If I slapped a 1.4x TC on the end Id have a similar piece of glass for about half the price.

A: The 180-400 is a VERY significant improvement over the 200-400 f4. I've owned 3 copies of the 200-400. The 180-400 is much better. You will understand the joy of the built-in converter if you've tried putting on and taking off a regular TC. I've even used my 180-400 with internal TC engaged AND added an external 1.4 x TC as well. If you can afford this lens, it's worth it.

Q: 4. Is there a variable ND drop in filter for this lens?

A: Nikon 40.5mm Drop-in Circular Polarizing Filter is the only one I know of. This takes the same filters as the Nikon 400mm f2.8E lens

Q: 5. Are the minimum focusing distance and maximum magnification for the lens with or without the built in teleconverter?

A: The minimum focus distance is the same with or without the TC being on. With the TC it's .36 and without it's .24.

Q: 6. IS THIS LENS IS MADE IN JAPAN?

A: Yes

Q: 7. What is the main reason to own this lens instead of a Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E?

A: The main reason for getting the NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR Lens is that you would get world-class, best possible image quality. The NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens is very good but is not in the same league. With the NIKKOR 180-400mm, you also get the best possible build quality with one full stop faster f/stop. If your desire is to get the best possible imaging quality for birding or sports or landscape, the NIKKOR 180-400mm is for you.

Q: 8. will this lens suffer performance when attached to the Z9 via the FTZ II lens adapter?

A: The performance of this Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR Lens would not suffer when attaching it to the Nikon Z9 via the FTZ II Lens Adapter.

Q: 9. Is the lens foot removable?

A: Absolutely. I replaced mine after I tried 5 different feet and found I like this one best: Kirk LP-46 Replacement Arca-Type Quick Release Lens Plate/Foot. It brings the foot much closer to the lens, and lowers the balance point of the lens and easily allows the use of this 1.5 lb gimbal head: Jobu Design Jobu Jr.3 Deluxe Gimbal Kit with Swing-Arm HM-J3D (This GREAT gimbal is HALF the weight of most other decent gimbals.)You will also find the following foot works very well, and gives added space between the lens and the foot to give your fingers more room carrying the lens with winter gloves: Jobu Design Low Profile Replacement Foot--200-400mm f4 (I have this foot on my 200-400 f4)

Q: 10. Is a plain glass protection filter available for this lens? I usually put them on my lenses just to keep the front glass clean.

A: No. There are no threads to accept a filter, and even if there were the weight of that much glass would throw off the very good balance of the lens. The front element of the lens is, essentially, plain glass and designed to protect the optical elements and be replaced at reasonable cost if it is damage. It has a coating that repels dust and fingerprints very well. In other words, this lens has a plain glass protection filter built in.

[f/4] I'm very pleased with this lens. The TC flips in instantly without even taking your finger off the shutter button (unlike the Canon version of this lens), and this lens is indistinguishable in sharpness in comparison to the best of the big primes.

And I thought some of you might benefit to know that the lens cap that I was using on my 200-400 f4 lens fits VERY WELL on this lens. That lens cap is the AquaTechASCN-3 Soft Cap for Select Nikon AF-S NIKKOR Lenses. This cap can be found here on B&H.

[Full-Frame] Let’s start with the amazing service from B&H Photo, Hershey, the sales person has been helping me out for quite a long time now. I was going to buy the Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S Lens. I ended up buying a Nikon 180 to 400 F4 TC , This lens is razor sharp!! And also taken into account I did get it on sale and it was almost half the price. Yes I do have to use the adapter with my Nikon Z9 but it actually focuses faster than my Nikon D6. If you could find a used one like in mint condition like a 9 or 9 Buy it or get a new one like I did because to find a used one is almost impossible, use this for professional MLB baseball Formula 1 football hands-down one of the best lenses I own. Yes, I highly recommend this lens…

[0.25x] I had been using the Nikkor 200-500 and was disappointed in its iq at distance. Up close it is not bad, but 500mm at distance it falls apart. This lens is prime lens quality from 180-400 and almost prime with the teleconverter engaged at 560mm. It has become my go to handheld wildlife lens. The 600mm fl ed is still a bit better at long range if you can set up a tripod, but handheld and moving this lens is the best I have used.

[0.25x] I have had this lens for a couple of months now and have used it on my D850 and D500 and have found the sharpness and clarity of the images to be excellent. I think it as as good as my 400mm f/2.8 with the versatility of the zoom. It is lighter and focuses just as fast. The built-in 1.4 teleconverter adds to its flexibility. For handheld wildlife photography this is my go-to lens.

[f/32] Got my lens recently, and first thing I did a focus check with one of the micro focus adjustment software. I got +2, with and without the teleconverter. Used the lens on my new D5. Never had a lens so stable on the results. Went to take pics of birds in flight and nesting egrets. Again the lens preformed beautifully. At 560 mm it was incredible sharp. I had an old 200-400, and there is no comparison. Also flipping the tele is no sweat.Very happy I made the purchase despite the price.

[21 x 12 x 12"] This is the best lens for Safari , it's very very sharp lens , the only thing wich i don't like is the weight comparing to sony 600mm or canon 600mm iii

[0.25x] This lens is unreal in how sharp, fast focusing, and versatile it is. All the reviews that I had read prior to purchasing, raved about the quality of the image. I totally agree that it is as sharp as a prime 400 mm, and starting at 180 mm rather than 200 mm is really a significant difference. Lastly, and literally with the flip of switch your range goes from 252 to 560. Find a way to get this lens.

[180 to 400mm] I traded in my Nikon 200-400 VR II for this lens. While expensive, it is a fantastic lens and I am happy I made the upgrade.

[Yes] I know it is a chunk of change but this is an amazing lens. I am using the D6 with this lens and I couldn't be happier. Fast, sharp and in-focus. I have been shooting baseball and it has been doing an incredible job. You will need to eat your Wheaties or put it on a tripod but it's worth it.
