Part of the company's SL line of controllers, the StudioLogic SL73 Studio is a portable, 73-key, hammer-action USB/MIDI keyboard controller, which delivers a piano-like playing experience in a compact package. It combines Fatar TP/100LR fully weighted keybed technology with a triple-switch detection system on each key and aftertouch information, offering pianists an expressive instrument with versatile touch and playability, for stage or studio applications.

The SL73 Studio is ideal for the gigging musician. Lightweight (at 25.3 lb), it is equipped with a rugged, full-metal casing and sculptured endcaps that help shield the keybed, while providing a safe grip when handling and transporting. Located at the center of the front panel, the simple and intuitive UI features a large TFT LCD color display that is easy to read in low-light environments. The friendly layout comes with an encoder knob to quickly navigate through all functions. Three programmable stick controllers give you direct control and manipulation of any desired sound parameter during live performances.

To get the most from your instrument, the SL Editor software (free download available separately) enables you to edit all available SL73 Studio parameters from a Mac/Windows computer, via USB. The software lets you program the keyboard feel with soft, medium, hard, or custom velocity curves. It also provides a database and a backup system to maintain and organize your projects.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. The description says the item is non-cancelable, and non-returnable. I am thinking seriously of buying one, but am confused about how a non-returnable item has a limited 1yr warranty. Is this not a contradiction, somehow?

A: Most electronics nowadays carry a limited 1 year warranty. The non-cancelable, non-returnable restriction is because the StudioLogic SL88 Studio is not a regularly stocked product, and because it would be ordered for a specific customer, and not the general public, it can not be returned.

Q: 2. Where to get repaired in the U.S or where to get a new motherboard?

A: Please contact NOVATION directly for authorized/qualified repair services for their products:a href= http://us.novationmusic.com/answerbase/contact/ target= _blank http://us.novationmusic.com/answerbase/contact//a

Q: 3. do i need an external tone generator for this keyboard to make a sound?

A: The StudioLogic SL88 is a MIDI controller with no built in sounds. An external sound modue or audio program will be needed.

Q: 4. CAN I USE HEADPHONES WITH IT?

A: No, this is a controller only and there are no sounds in it to hear. You will monitor audio via your device's headphone output (computer/iPad).

Q: 5. does it come with a sustain pedal?

A: This unit does not include a sustain pedal. Here's a recommendation for a sustain pedal B&H # AUFPP1L.

Q: 6. Are the rotary controls on this continuous encoders, or pots that stop at each end?

A: The rotary controls on the Nektar Technology Impact LX49+ 49-Key USB MIDI Controller Keyboard have pots that stop at each end. They are not continuous.

Q: 7. Can this be used to replace an Auturia controller (like a Minilab) in Auturia software?

A: Arturia Software Instruments are compatible with all midi controllers, so the Nektar Technology Impact LX49+ 49-Key USB MIDI Controller Keyboard will work.

Q: 8. Is the device plug and play or requires me to download drivers upon first use of the controller?

A: As per the manual and their website, there does not seem to be any required drivers for this controller.

Q: 9. does this keyboard have its own tone generator? Or will I need a seperate synth for it to play through?

A: The StudioLogic SL88 is a MIDI controller with no built in sounds. An external sound generator or music creation software is needed.

Q: 10. Will this work with Ableton Live 9 Lite?

A: It will, and nicely...Great controller for the price. Knobs work great for your various effect and mod sends. Go to website for specific DAW platforms, (including Ableton). Nektar products are quite functional with many capabilities for the price. Enjoy!

[32.45 lb] Honestly this controller is perfect for learning and practicing piano. Solid and perfect construction. The aftertouch is great. In other words is perfect for the price.

[46 x 17.5 x 9"] The Hammer 88 is a no frills MIDI controller with a nice weighted action. Construction seems solid. A pretty good buy for the price.

[32.45 lb] Have been using SL keyboards since 2001. They've come a long way. The Fatar keyboards are as reliable as ever. Super key action and travel. Very solid construction throughout. I thought the XY controllers/pitch bend mod sticks would be too small for my hands but they're quite intuitive and convenient. Very easy keyboard to play. The footprint is ideal. Very slim but the 73 key range is very versatile if you're not wanting to get into a full 88 keyboard. Highly recommend any of the SL keyboards.

[32.45 lb] I replaced my Casio PX-160 digital piano for this StudioLogic SL88 Studio MIDI keyboard controller.
I really like the Casio PX-160 key action, however, this StudioLogic key bed with its touch action is a fine replacement to keep my fingers physically fit.
This keyboard in conjunction with the lighter action Novation Launchkey 88 Mk3 MIDI keyboard makes a fine pair for alternating between touch and light action.
This StudioLogic key bed is Fatar TP/100LR, a highly regarded and affordable key bed.
Also this keyboard controller is Made in Italy.
I am quite content with this purchase.

[32.45 lb] Studiologic did an excellent job designing this keyboard. The action emulates the touch of a high-end weighted action keybed, with great piano feel. The SL Editor software works great and gives you a lot of flexibility for creating patches which leverage all of the keyboards parameters such as key splits, up to four pedal assignments, Midi CC, program change, etc. It has great features for live performance such as 3 joysticks and an LCD screen to make navigation easy in low light environments. It is light weight and easy to take to a gig. The only small negative about it is that I wish SL would have put two or three midi-configurable control/push button knobs in the area where the joy sticks are located.

[46 x 17.5 x 9"] There aren't many weighted boards with less than 88 keys, but the SL73 is even compact enough to fit in most 61 key cases.

The action is heavy, but expressive and the 3 joysticks are more useful than they seem - as they can be programmed to change many different midi parameters eg. I use joystick 3 to mix three layered instruments, with piano, strings (vertical axis), and pad (horizontal axis). Very handy.

Powering via the USB also keeps the setup very clean. Highly recommended.

[Color LCD] I love the feel of the keys. Just like what I remember from my piano (still on the mainland, built in 1900, we have no room for it here).

I've only just started exploring its use with my Linux-based software, so I can only state that having the full 88 keys back is WONDERFUL after decades of only 61 keys. A big part of the joy of piano is it covers the entire scale.

Aftertouch works.

I haven't done anything with the three joystick controls.

When I first set it up, I didn't have a USB-A to USB-B cable, so I tried using my MIDI interface, but wasn't able to make that work. I have a history of being flummoxed by old-style MIDI cables, so I may simply have connected it up wrong.

Then I found an appropriate USB cable, plugged it in, and things just worked.

I like the keyboard. I like the fact that it's not loaded up with arranger software, instruments in ROM, or tied to proprietary Windows/MacOS-only applications.

I look forward to playing it a lot!

[Color LCD] This is an amazing keyboard with heavy keys. My only complain is with the SL Editor, that could automatically identify the keyboard (currently you have to configure the MIDI section all the times).

[Color LCD] A couple of months ago I bought my first ever keyboard (Yamaha PSR Series 61 key). Never wanted a keyboard before as I cant read sheet music and am not a musician or artist. A couple weeks with my beginner keyboard (using Acid Pro) and soon realized you really do need the full 88 keys. Shopped around a lot before getting the SL88.
The SL88 feels more like the actual Pianos at church (while I am confident our church will continue to use ACTUAL instruments, i.e. Pianos, Organs, etc.. for the remainder of time).
The keyboard feels and plays very nicely after getting used to it.
As a noobie to MIDI controllers I will say the included software is somewhat straight forward, but did have to watch a video on how to get it so sync with the keyboard (so easy really).
Love that it is fully configurable. The gifted synths are very cool if you get them.
Only thing is I would like to have had simple transport controls, as well as a simple button to allow turning off touch sensitivity for certain synths. For this you have to make a profile and switch to it, my old Yamaha just has a button right there to turn touch sensitivity on and off.
Overall love this controller and will be keeping it!
