The HPE 30TB LTO-8 Ultrium RW Data Cartridgefrom HPE 30TB LTO-8 Ultrium RW Data Cartridgehas been tested to meet demands for high levels of reliability when restoring data. It offers a high storage density, ease of management, and scalable storage and backup performance with an archival life of up to 30 years. Uncompressed, it offers a storage capacity of 12TB and read speeds of up to 360 MB/s, but thanks to a 2.5:1 compression factor, it can deliver a storage capacity of 30TB and read speeds of up to 700 MB/s, or 2.7TB per hour. This media is rewritable, as compared to WORM (write once, read many), and to help keep your data secure, features FIPS 140-2 Level 1 and AES 256-bit encryption. HPE LTO-8 Ultrium can write or read data at up to 2.7TB per hour, storing,

encrypting, and protecting up to 30TB on a single cartridge, making it suitable for

large-scale, 24/7, mission-critical IT environments (assumes 2.5:1 compression).

An 85% increase in the number of tracks and an 8% increase in bit density has

permitted an increase in capacity from 15TB for LTO-7 to 30TB to LTO-8 and from

3584 tracks for LTO-6 to 6656 tracks for 30TB LTO-8 Ultrium cartridges (assuming 2.5:1 compression).

HPE LTO Ultrium cartridge memory chip delivers fast access time and enhanced media monitoring.

Helps to ensure that restores take place with fewer media failures and backups are less disrupted.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How Many Passes does it Hold?

A: The IBM LTO Ultrium Universal Cleaning Cartridge is good for 50 passes.

Q: 2. I have 2x11TB Pegasus Promise RAID hard drives. I want to back these up for off-site storage after this year's project is complete. I don't expect to use the tape directly, just need to archive. Is this the best solution? What Drive is needed to write/read.

A: Yes, this solution would be the best option. The cartridges can hold up to 15TB of compressed data. A good option to read/write to the cartridges is the mLogic mTape Thunderbolt 2 LTO-7 Ultrium External Tape Drive.

Q: 3. How do I know that the barcodes that are assigned to these tapes are not, through a quirk, the same as any of the tapes that I now have?

A: HP ships the tapes with a unique label. No two are the same. Providing you have always purchased this part number, you will not see any duplicates.

Q: 4. Does this work with my oracle sl150 lto tape library?

A: Yes, the LTO Cleaning Cartridge is compatible with the Oracle SL150 library

Q: 5. Does it come with a label?

A: No it does not.

Q: 6. Are these popular and reliable? There is only one review and very negative. Are people really using this for reliable data storage?

A: The Hewlett Packard Enterprises 30TB LTO-8 Ultrium RW Data Cartridge are used by many and would need an LTO recorder to be used. It is great for long term storage.

Q: 7. Does that data written to these tapes have to be compressed?

A: No, data that is written to the Hewlett Packard Enterprises 45TB LTO Ultrium 9 RW Data Cartridge does not require compression, unless you'd like to achieve the higher 45TB capacities the tapes are capable of. Without compression, these tapes have an 18TB capacity.

Q: 8. Is this compatible with my oracle sl150 tape library?

A: Yes, the LTO Cleaning Cartridge is compatible with the Oracle SL150 library

Q: 9. I used the above tape (LTO 4 800gb) for tape backup. [5.6 µm] I use this to archvie 4K digital cinema data, using a tape library to back up a RAID. The tapes are expensive and the process is slow and cumbersome, but it is probably the most stable format for archiving digital data. If you are developing a new system, you'll probably want LTO-6, but if you're already on LTO-5, this product is just fine. Keep in mind that eventually you will need custom labels, so buy a bunch of them in advance.
