Ideal for visual observation as well as prime focus, eyepiece projection, and afocal imaging astrophotography techniques, the Vixen Optics SD115S 115mm f/8 ED APO Refractor Telescopehas the largest aperture and longest focal length in the series, boosting its light-gathering ability and magnification potential up from the smaller models—making this an ideal optical tube for any astronomer or photographer who wants to view and photograph the moon, planets and deep sky objects.

Optically, Vixen outfitted the SD115S with FPL53 extra-low dispersion (ED) glass, in a fully multi-coated apochromatic lens system that corrects for both spherical and chromatic aberrations, astigmatism, and off-axis comas. This correction creates a wide flat field of view without distortion and removes the blue-tinted halo effect for true high-contrast color transmission. It can accept both 2" and 1.25" eyepieces and accessories for visual use, and threads on the drawtube allow direct connection of T-rings and other camera mounts.

Included with the the optical tube assembly (OTA) is a flip-mirror diagonal with dual 1.25" holders. The light path can be directed to the upper holder with the mirror in the Up position, and to the rear holder by flipping it down. For visual observation, the mirror can hold two eyepieces to allow easy changes from low to high magnification. When using it for imaging, the camera or imaging system is placed in the back, and an eyepiece can be attached at the top to check alignment and tracking between exposures.

Vixen offers the OTA without a mount and tripod for users who already have a reliable support system, but include a mounting ring assembly and a Vixen-style dovetail plate to make it compatible with a wide variety of mounts. An integrated carry handle makes set up and break down easier and safer.

[115mm] I was looking for a new apochromatic refractor that was as large as possible while still remaining airline carry-on portable. There are a lot of options out there, ranging from inexpensive Chinese scopes to highly rated Takahashi to unobtainable (and unaffordable) scopes from Astro-Physics. The TV-85 is premium priced, but it has a lot of advantages over other scopes.

First, it’s very rugged- more than just about any other scope. I’ve owned a TeleVue Pronto for over 30 years and carried it on lot of trips, and it still works like new. Second, it’s from a U.S. company who provide great warranty support and who have been great innovators in telescope and eyepiece design over the years. Over half the premium eyepieces on the market are copies of TeleVue designs.

The evening it arrived I took it outside for a test, and I wasn’t disappointed. Contrast is excellent, with tiny stars showing against a black background. There’s no discernible chromatic error- gone is the purple glow seen at high magnifications in my Pronto. I’m looking forward to taking it out to a truly dark sky site.

[890mm] I have many astronomical telescopes and this one has become one of my favorites,! Powerful and very handy to use, easy to balance on the mount, and having crisp clear optics is an important plus! Very fine optics from Vixen in Japan. Awesome product!

[Refractor] Excellent package--got as first scope for beginning astronomer. Wanted a large aperture scope at a reasonable price. Optics superb for the price of this combination mount/optical tube assembly. Altazmith mount is superb, with fine adjustments for tracking. The total combination is easily portable.

[44 x 11 x 9"] I love my telescope and the slow motion control on the tripod is awesome

[115mm] This scope offers excellent image quality and light gathering power with a relatively light weight. I can't see any color fringes on stars. Coma is well corrected by the included flattener, but it is visible in the corners of the frame. Mechanical quality is very good. The case is very sturdy and offers good protection, but it if also fairly heavy.

I've had the Esprit 120 for about a month now and I'm already considering getting the Esprit 80 as well.

[890mm] Exceptional optics and worth the price with low weight for entry level mounts.
Takes better images than 2-3 times pricier triplet apos.

[f/7.7] *Preliminary review*
Just received this OTA three days ago. Large focuser is robust, although I do no astrophotography, it appears as though it will support any imaging train with ease. Supplied rings and dovetail plate well-suited for this size scope, but I will get a longer dovetail plate for easier balancing. Sky conditions allowed a brief window to star test it on Polaris. Perfect pattern inside and outside of focus. Will add more in due course...

[None] I purchased a used copy of the TV-85 in January 2023 from B&H. It was listed as a 10 and sure enough the telescope met that very high standard. As noted in the other reviews, the TV-85 is a beautifully designed and constructed instrument.

One area not discussed in the reviews to any extent is the Tele Vue system. The TV-85 is one part of the system. The mounts, eyepieces, diagonals and other accessories are designed and constructed to the same high standards. The accessory kit for the TV-85 is expensive, but none of the pieces are starter gear or the bargain basement kit eyepiece. The pieces fit and work together in a manner that helps its user.

The point of this comment is state that the TV-85 is one part of a system and that the system as a whole is greater than the sum of its pieces. This is a wonderful scope but so is the entire package.

[None] Great scope, so far for watching only. I can imagine how good it is for photography.
