If you do use it for solar eclipse, you MUST, to keep your vision, add add a CERTIFIED solar eclipse filter to stop the very damaging UV light. A: Yes, technically a 58mm lens cap should fit. But filters like these can be wider. They essentially are made up of two polarizing filters sandwiched together. So they can be a bit wider because of that.
