Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. will this bag fit a 600mm prime lens?

A: While you do not list the specific brand/model of 600mm lens you own, I do not think it would fit in the above case. While the case itself is large enough to hold the lens, you would need to purchase one of the Core Units to protect and pad the lens inside the case. The largest DLSR Core Unit compatible with this case would be the Shimoda Designs Large DSLR Core Unit (Parisian Nights), B&H # SHCULDSLRPN, whose interior dimensions are 10.6 x 15.0 x 6.3". As most of the 600mm lenses we carry are around 18 inches in length, they would be too long to fit the Large DSLR Core Unit.

Q: 2. What size ICU is included?

A: The dimensions of the Shimoda Designs Small Core Unit for Mirrorless Camera included in the Shimoda Designs Urban Explore Backpack are 11.4 x 9.4 x 5.1".

Q: 3. What is torso size/range in inches for 60 backpack?

A: The Shimoda Designs Explore 60 Backpack (Blue Nights) is 24" long, so it will be appropriate for almost anyone, although it may not be as comfortable for those who are under 63" tall.

Q: 4. Is the camera insert swappable for other insert sizes?

A: The core unit in the Shimoda Designs Urban Explore Backpack (Boa, 30L) can be swapped with any of the existing Mirrorless Core Units (Small, Medium and Large). You can find the core unit compatibility chart here: https://bhpho.to/3XLRPdH

Q: 5. Is the core unit of the Urban Explore 30 deep enough to fit a gripped Sony A1 or a 50 1.2 GM standing up?

A: The Shimoda Designs Urban Explore Backpack (Anthracite, 30L) core unit is 5.1 inches deep. The Sony 50 1.2 GM lens measures 4.3 inches so it should fit standing up. Unfortunately, it won't fit a camera with battery grip.

Q: 6. The listed specs for interior dimensions indicate the volume is only 30 liters, which is too small for any backpacking with DSLR and more than 1 lens. Are the specs wrong or is this bag not for backpacking (overnight on trail)?

A: The interior dimensions for the Shimoda Designs Explore 60 Backpack is listed as 11.42 x 22.44 x 7.09" This backpack can easily carry two DSLR's and at least four lenses. This bag is ideal for backpacking because it weighs only 3.3 lbs.

Q: 7. What core unit inserts are compatible with this backpack?

A: All core units for DSLR are compatible with the Shimoda Designs Explore 60 Backpack (Sea Pine). There are three options either 3 small DSLR core units, 1 small and 1 medium DSLR core unit stacked, or 1 large DLSR core unit.

Q: 8. Is this Airline carryon friendly if I collapse the top portion?

A: No, for American Domestic carryon luggage a general rule for carryon size is 22 x 14 x 9 inches.

Q: 9. How does the 25L handle the Nikon Z9 along with the 24-70mm and 70-200mm 2.8's?

A: The Shimoda Designs Urban Explore Backpack (Anthracite, 25L) can fit the Z9, the 24-70mm lens, and the 70-200mm lens. Just keep in mind it will be a tight fit.

Q: 10. can this bag be used as a carryon backpack?

A: The Shimoda Designs Explore 60 Backpack (Sea Pine) is 24 x 11.4 x 11". Most airlines have a 22 x 14 x 9" for carry-on bags. So, this bag is too large for most airlines.

[Sea Pine Green] Although I have not had a lot of trail experience with the pack at the time of this review, what field time I have had with it has lead me to believe its an exceptional bag. Very well designed and very well put together. The materials are top notch. The design is very thoughtful. Its definitely rugged and has the ability to be customized for various torso lengths. It is a photo backpack so its not the most easily accessible bag while you are wearing it. If you have set up the internal units correctly the camera can be accessed from either side without taking the pack off. Seams quite weather resistant. Each internal unit comes with a zippable bagto provide another layer of dust and water resistance.

[5.15 lb] Shimoda is by far my favorite camera backpack maker, I use there Explorer V2 for all travel work and a lot of production work. The Urban Explore is perfect for my day to day work, alongside a personal travel pack for street photography. Great construction, super comfortable even with weight, simply the best!

[24 x 13 x 9.75"] This cover protects gear well from rain and is big enough to fit over my standard backpack and my camera backpack. It also folds up to a nice compact size.

[Universal] I have over six camera bags. My recent addition was the Shimoda Urban Explorer, 25L, in Boa. I used it for the first time today walking the Zinzinnati (Cincinnati) OctoberFest. I put my Nikon Z9, 135mm Plena, and my 50mm 1.2 in it comfortably. While I could not have got another lens in the pockets, I did have room enough for the spare battery, lens cloth, and a few small items. The top open space could have held more. It worked extremely well.

I watched many videos on YouTube prior to purchasing it. I listened to people say it won't stand up on its own, and one said it did not have a waist band. The word Urban says it all. It is for the Urban environment. That is what I used it for. It worked as advertised. I did not need a waistband. I would if I was hiking at the Arches (Moab), but I wasn't, I was walking Octoberfest. It was extremely comfortable. And it felt great on my back. And felt great when I hooked my Z9 with the Plena on it to the Peak Design Clip. Again, as advertised. It was perfect.

I'm 5'9 and 265 lbs. I adjusted the straps and made it extremely comfortable to wear. I mentioned my weight since heavier people are wider and the bag adjusted wonderfully. My bags are specific to their environment. I used my Shimoda Action X40 V2 (Yellow 40L) when I hiked Zion, Bryce, and Arches. I would not tell you to use the Urban Explorer for those hikes. I 100% recommend it for the Urban, hence the name, environment.

[Yes] I purchased this backpack on sale in a deal zone offer. Man is it comfortable. I have loaded it up with a field recorder, batteries, microphones, tripod, and assorted accessories to a considerable weight and yet it floats on my back. Love the harness and adjustments; it keeps the pack tight and steady on you back. Looking forward to taking this on long hikes in the field.

[Universal] If you are a landscape photographer and like to carry a healthy amount of equipment, this is your bag. The bag is lightweight. It holds a large amount of equipment and the shoulder straps are the most comfortable I've used (I've had Think Tank and f-stop bags, which are also quite good, but none is as comfortable as this one. Shimoda also has an excellent system of matching accessories. When traveling by air I put all my essential, photo equipment in the Shimoda roller, collapse the Explore 60 so it fits in my check bag and traipsing through airports is quite easy. The 60 will also leave you with plenty of extra room for jacket, food, and other photo accessories that don't need to be in the main compartment. It's also very sturdy. I've had mine since these were first shipped and it remains in great shape and is the first bag I go to for landscape photography that will involve some hiking.

[Empty] THis is the second Shimoda I have - I also have the older 40L. My Sony 200-600 barely fit into the 40L, but there's room to spare in this 60L. The crazy thing is, I can 't find a Shimoda insert that holds the tele with camera attached. I ended up getting a f-stop XL insert to use in this pack.

[Empty] One big thing that sets the Shimoda rain cover apart from competition it's the size.

The rain cover size is designed to be larger to accommodate accessories (tripod, water bottle etc)

This makes it really easy to put it on and off. You don't have to struggle with the perfect fit.

Works great on my Shimoda Action X 50

[Sea Pine Green] Was cross shopping against Peak Design, Nomatic, and Wandrd bags of similar size. This checked more boxes, was as functional/if not more than others. Is it expensive?! Yes. But it's highly functional, comfortable, and subtle/minimalistic enough (it does not scream, i'm a camera bag!, very important when traveling). Some of the other bags look bulkier and their shapes are not as pleasant. Plus, it fits on an airplane under the seat (25L).
