The Vanguard Alta BH-300 Ball Head for Tripodsfrom Vanguard Alta BH-300 Ball Head for Tripodsis a 1.3 lb Arca-type head that can support cameras that weigh up to 66.1 lb. Located inside the clamp is a safety pin that prevents the plate from sliding out if the clamp is partially opened. Moreover, the 4.6" tall head has three separate knobs to control it; the main locking knob governs the movement of the ball, the friction control knob adds or decreases drag on the ball per your comfort level, and the third knob enables the ball head to pan a full 360°.

A single-cut notch on the side allows a mounted camera to move in a 90° vertical angle. Mounting the ball head to a tripod is easily done via the 3/8"-16 thread, but a 1/4"-20 bushing adapter is included for those tripods with a smaller thread. Additionally, a QS-60 V2 Quick Shoe is also included with the ball head.

[Yes] I did some research in the area of ball heads with higher-end weight capacity and an Arca-type QR clamp and decided on this Vanguard Alta BH-300. In the end it was a pretty easy decision, because this extremely well-made and sturdy ball head is available new for only $79.99 from B&H, a price that is hard to beat. The Arca-type clamp easily accommodates the L-brackets that I have on all my cameras, and the ball head itself readily attaches to my Oben Car Window Mount. I am now ready to take lightning photos from my car. 5

[Yes] This head holds all of my cameras very securely, including a 4x5 view camera, at any angle I choose to lock them. Heavy, but totally fine weight for a studio tripod. 5

[1x 1/4"-20 Male] This may not be the smoothest, but holds steady. Definitely worth the 76 dollars when it was on sale. No camera drifting with large lenses, Tamron 150-500. Really improved my moon shots. 5

[Yes] This is a great piece of kit, first day out of the box it was knocked about scrambling over river rocks and still worked perfectly. Time will tell whether this holds up to a 5 star rating. I bought this to replace my pan & tilt tripod head which struggled to stay level when I used my 70 - 200mm lens, but this one didn't seem to have any trouble at all. 5
