The EdgeRouter 4 offers Gigabit Ethernet ports and an SFP port for a fiber link. The EdgeRouter 4 is also capable of routing up to 3.4 million packets per second and has a line rate of 4 Gb/s.

Powered by a proprietary and intuitive graphical interface, EdgeOS, EdgeRouters can easily be configured for routing, security, and management features required to efficiently run your network. For advanced network professionals, an integrated CLI is

available for quick and direct access using familiar commands.

Even greater convenience and flexibility is provided by the UNMS app, which makes it possible to manage the EdgeRouter remotely from your mobile device.

DHCP Server

Set up multiple DHCP servers to assign IP ranges in different subnets on the different interfaces. Easily control dynamic and static IP addressing for your network devices.

Monitoring Tools

Conveniently track network activity and devices from tools such as Ping, Trace, Discover,

Packet Capture, and Log Monitor.

Firewall Policies

Organize the rules you apply in the order you specify.

Firewall Groups

Apply the policies to groups filtered by IP address, network address, or port number.

NAT Rules

The EdgeRouter changes packet addressing based on your customized source and destination NAT rules.

Interfaces

Each port functions as an independent interface. You can also configure Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) interfaces for network segmentation.

Routing

Configure static routes and dynamic routing protocols to effectively manage the routes used by

the EdgeRouter.

Intuitive User Interface

The EdgeRouter provides a graphical user interface designed for convenient setup and control. Accessed via a network port and web browser, the user-friendly interface provides intuitive management with a virtual view of the ports, displaying physical connectivity, speed, and status. The Dashboard screen displays detailed statistics: IP information, MTU, transmit and receive speeds, and status for each physical and virtual interface.

• VLAN interfaces for network segmentation

• Static routes and support of routing protocols: OSPF, RIP, BGP, and MPLS

• Firewall policies and NAT rules

• Application identification with Deep Packet Inspection (DPI)

• DHCP services

• Quality of Service (QoS)

• Network administration and monitoring tools

• Administrator and operator accounts

• Comprehensive IPv6 support

Configuration by CLI

The CLI provides quick and flexible configuration by command line and features the following:

• For power users, configuration and monitoring of all advanced features

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. can you plug the included power adapter into SFP port?

A: No. The SFP port is a networking port. The included power adapter connects to the only port it can plug into on the rear of the housing.

Q: 2. Can Each port functions as an independent interface VLAN ?

A: The Ubiquiti Networks ER-X-SFP EdgeRouter X's VLAN-aware switch feature allows the EdgeRouter to tag and untag VLANs on different switch-ports. This is done by grouping the Ethernet ports under the switch0 interface and adding the VLAN values to the switch-ports. More information can be found here: https://bit.ly/4bj0BFT

Q: 3. Does this device have built-in Wifi? Some of the reviews suggest yes, others suggest a separate AP is required.

A: No it does not have wifi, a separate AP would be required.

Q: 4. can you plug the included power adapter into the SFP port?

A: No, only Ethernet.

Q: 5. Can this device support PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)?

A: Yes, this switch supports Passive PoE passthrough

Q: 6. Will this power the UAP-AC-PRO-E access point?

A: No. The UAP-AC-Pro (and the essentially identical UAP-AC-Pro-E) operate from 48 V POE. The ER-X operates from 24 V. The ER-X can supply POE power to one access point, but not one of the PRO series. However, you might find that the power supply provided with the ER-X is not beefy enough to provide power to both the ER-X and the access point. There is a more powerful power adapter available that allows the ER-X to provide POE power to an access point (but only a 24 V one).

Q: 7. Is this the US versions ER-4-US or the international version ER-4 with the orange sticker?

A: We are a US authorized dealer.

Q: 8. Can this router provide DHCP for an internal GB LAN not connected to internet?

A: It can be setup for a LAN that is not internet connected.

Q: 9. Can I connect this router to a modem (using the SFP port) and five other Ethernet cables?

A: When setting up the Ubiquiti Networks ER-X-SFP EdgeRouter X with NAT you will be able to select any of the 6 ports for the WAN interface, including the SFP port.

Q: 10. Does it have a built-in firewall?

A: Yes, the Ubiquiti Networks 12-Port EdgeRouter 12 Advanced Network Router does have a built in firewall. You are able to configure settings via EdgeOS.

[60.00 W] Router has a very complete feature set. The GUI is relatively easy to use. There are many YouTube videos from a number of sources explaining typical setup. Advanced features may require using the embedded Linux CLI interface.

Probably overkill for a non-technical user or casual gamer.

A good match for 100+ Mb internet connections.

[64 B] I wanted this unit for the quad core CPU at 1GHz. I would say this is a good refresh or upgrade from the Edgerouter X and Lite. The CPU doesn't spike under normal home use. I do not use any of the advanced features like DPI that could load this down.Right now I use SQM to help with bufferbloat and get my desired speeds from my cable provider (350Mb down and 20Mb up) . The only other reason for this kind of router is VLAN support for LAN segmentation at home, which I plan to use for my IP cameras and NVR, and IoT devices.

[External] it is located between cable modem and rest of network, openvpn form ios and andorid seems to work on my 1st attempt. however, one need to read a lot of forum post to not make pilot mistakes, GUI interface does not expose all the features, CLI interface need to be used for openvpn setup.

[Yes] This was inserted right after my comcast cable modem to split my home network into two separate lans without incurring a performance hit. Which my tests say it does. Happy Holidays in about 30 minutes! One lan is for testing, the other lan is for the home office. Being able to do stupid/fun things on one side and not impact my responsible work on the other lan was the goal. This unit fits. Surprisingly, the GUI is usable on my phone, my table, and PC. Lots of options, a lot of configuration control. Plus has console access (CLI, if ever needed). Online active support forum for questions. Uses a wide variety of affordable SFP interfaces (optical and copper) Hasnt hiccuped. Fun stuff IMO. Looking forward to learning more about/using the built-in sophisticated firewall capability. Based on my experience with this initial purchase, feel confident/inclined to purchasing managed switch(es) for some VLAN experimentation. Appreciate that B&H packaged it well.

[Metal] We utilize these for tower site deployments and like the easy UI setup as well as a deeper CLI configuration experience. The resources are enough for any small to medium application.

[60.00 W] I bought this router to load balance the internet from two ISPs in my home. The configuration and set up was easy and there are plenty of tutorials on the internet to help you. In the end, I was able to configure the router and my internet speed has increased quite a bit with this new setup. Very happy with this purchase.

[64 B] I had the ER lite and the ER-4 upgrade was a no brainer. The settings save and performance is definitely faster in the GUI and changing firewall rules. No complaints here!

[Yes] I purchased this router because I have 2 WAN providers and 13 distance learning children and cannot have down time.
Easy setup and great performance so far so good!

[3.39 lb] I upgraded to the ER-4 from a UniFi USG. The USG was good with an ease of use thanks to the UniFi Controller software, but was limited by that same software. The ER-4 is MUCH more capable provided you are willing to delve into its more technical interface. Fortunately, there are loads of YouTube videos on configuring Edge Routers, so you loose your intimidation quickly. The things that the USG just does in the background (like setting up port forwards) are not as intuitive with the ER-4, but the ER-4 gives you options when you do set them up, while some things, like load balancing 2 WANs, are much better with the ER-4. One last difference is the running temperature. The USG was always HOT, while the ER-4 is barely warm.
