This 1.3 to 8.7-stop, 77mm Hoya Solas Variable ND Filter 77mm 1.3-8.7 Stopis a solid variable neutral density filter that provides an exposure reduction of 1.3 to 8.7 stops. The 0.4 to 2.6 optical density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed without overexposing your image. By slowing your exposure time, you can create motion blur for special effects or to convey a sense of movement. Opening your iris allows you to create shallow depth of field, which can help isolate your subject.

The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is also visually demarcated with lines that represent different density values.

This Hoya variable neutral density filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity and color fidelity. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes 10-layers of anti-reflection coating. These coatings also provide further protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The design of this filter has also been optimized for use with digital sensors and to promote nearly flat attenuation of visible light and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to dial in differing amounts of density from scene to scene.

0.4 to 2.6 density filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a reduction of 1.3 to 8.7 stops, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

Offers increased flexibility to use specific ISO settings or ISO films under bright ambient light.

Provides increased exposure flexibility while using cinema or video cameras within a designated film frame rate.

Multicoated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections.

Constructed from optical glass for clarity and color fidelity.

Durable and lightweight aluminum-alloy filter ring.

Front filter ring with 77mm filter threads allows for use with other filters.

Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What can I use as a front cap for this item (dont tell me Schneider 86mm Push-On Cap because it does NOT fit)?

A: This Sigma LCF-86 III 86mm Lens Cap is compatible with the Genustech 82mm Variable Neutral Density and Circular Polarizer Filter. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1168370-REG

Q: 2. Does this filter show IR pollution color shift on BMPCC4K?

A: We have not been able to test this filter. But it is a high quality filter that should not shift in color.

Q: 3. Can the adjustment knobs be removed?

A: The knobs on the Neewer 2-in-1 Variable ND2-ND32 & CPL Filter (77mm, 1 to 5-Stop) are non-removable.

Q: 4. Which stack caps or covers fit this filter for protection when not in use?

A: There are several caps for the SmallRig 77mm MRC Variable ND Filter on the product page, under the "Accessories" tab: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1681507-REG/smallrig_3590_77mm_mrc_variable_nd.html/accessories

Q: 5. What does the MRC in the name mean?

A: The letters MRC in a filter refer to the multi resistant coatings. The SmallRig 77mm MRC Variable ND Filter has 18 layers of coatings on each side for optimal quality and for water- and oil-resistant performance.

Q: 6. Apart from the lack of the self-locking mechanism, are there other disadvantages of this model comparing to the self-locking one?

A: Aside from the density range and the locking feature, there is no other difference.

Q: 7. What can I use for a front cap for this? I've tried 86mm lens caps and they do not work.

A: You could use an 86mm push-on lens cap that doesn't have threads for the Genustech 82mm Variable Neutral Density and Circular Polarizer Filter: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/157564-REG/Schneider_91_030386_86mm_Push_On_Lens_Cap.html

Q: 8. So it appears you can't use a lens hood with this? It looks like the set thumb screw would stick out to far.

A: You can remove the thumb screw to allow the use of a lens hood.

Q: 9. Does this produce an X-Pattern at max ND?

A: It does at just beyond max, I just back it off a tiny bit and it's fine. The ND range is large enough that if you need to go beyond max, it's a sign that adjusting the ISO a touch might be a good idea.

Q: 10. Does it have hard stops?

A: It is smooth. Most variable ND filters are smooth so make the transition smoother in video.

[77 mm] How much can you say about a neutral density filter. Quality seems good, and it does what I need. I bought 72 mm, but should have gone with 77 to use with my new lens. Oh well, hind sight. I bought a bunch of adapter rings to use the filter with all of my smaller lenses.

[0.2 lb] This is a good filter for the money which is important as no landscape photographer should go outside without a neutral density filter or two. The .6 is a good choice if you want to carry just one. Great for general daylight use and perfect for waterfalls; allows you to use a slower shutter speed for that silky water look.

[77 mm] I bought this lens for my Minolta XL-401 Super 8 mm camera. The lens mounts firmly, is affordable and has clear optics.

[4 x 4 x 1"] this filter is great for shooting in bright light. I shoot a lot of waterfalls and it helps balance the light between the white water and the dark rocks in the creek.

[Aluminum] Use for waterfall photography where I need to use a long exposure in daylight. Works great, especially when you have an assortment of different ND filter strengths to work with. However, I have noticed on my 77mm Hoya NDs that the mounting clip inside the ring is beginning to separate and the glass is now loose. That might have happened during exposure to hot sunlight in the summer months. Also, be aware that you cannot use your normal lens cleaner to clean these filters (as stated on the filter case, but I inadvertently used the cleaner and it streaks the filters really badly!). Still, used properly, these are a must-have in your camera bag!

[Glass] The Hoya 67mm ND 0.6 filter is a must have filter for anyone shooting landscape photography. When the sun in shining bright, the filter will limit the amount of light passing through the aperture by about 2 stops, without any loss of clarity or color. It will also allow you to stop down without sacrificing shutter speed. A terrific lens with a very resonable price tag, I would strongly recommend it to my friends.
