Dedicated to extreme close-up imaging, the Canon EF-mount Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro Lens Canon EFfrom Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro Lens Canon EFis a specialized macro lens for photographing subjects at magnifications greater than life-size. Operating within a 2.5:1 to 5:1 range, this lens has a minimum focus distance of just 6.8" at the 5:1 magnification along with a comfortable 1.6" working distance. This range is benefitted by the wide-angle focal length, too, in order to achieve greater depth of field compared to long focal length macro lenses. Complementing the close-up capabilities, the optical design incorporates one extra-low dispersion element to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for a high degree of clarity. Additionally, distinguishing itself from other macro lenses, this 25mm f/2.8 is characterized by its notably sleek and lightweight design for easier handling and more room to work with artificial lighting.

Prime 25mm f/2.8 is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLR cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 40mm equivalent focal length.

Specifically developed for macro photography, this lens is designed for use within a 2.5:1 to 5:1 magnification range for producing greater-than-life-size imagery. This lens does not offer infinity focus.

When at 5:1 magnification, the lens has a minimum focusing distance of 6.8" along with a working distance of 1.6", which affords sufficient room for illuminating your subject. At the 2.5:1 position, a minimum focusing distance of 9.2" is possible along with a working distance of 1.8".

Wide-angle design benefits the high magnification design by providing greater depth of field compared to telephoto or long lens designs.

Manual focus operation for precise control over focusing distance when working with close-up subjects.

One extra-low dispersion element greatly reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.

Eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality when using shallow depth of field.

Especially slim and lightweight physical design is easier to use handheld and offers more room for illuminating close-up subjects.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can a macro light be attached to the front of this lens? If so, what mm diameter ring fits?

A: As mentioned in another answer, Venus has advertised a ringlight for the lens, but I could not find one anywhere including China. Most people are putting a flash ballhead on their flash shoe, mounting the flash on the head, tilting it downward toward the front of the lens, and attaching a off-the-shelf or custom diffuser to the flash. Others are using the Venus KX-100 flash unit.

Q: 2. Is there a focus ring on this lens to manually focus? I'm seeing confusing statements about the requirement of moving the camera to focus.

A: Yes this lens has a manual focus ring.

Q: 3. Will it work with my Nikon d90

A: This FX lens will cover the DX sensor of the D90 without issue. It have 1.5 crop factor or magnification. Since it is a manual lens with no electronic communication, you will not have auto focus or auto aperture or metadata. Think small.

Q: 4. Other than internal clip filters, can one add filters to this lens?

A: No this lens does not have filter threads

Q: 5. Does it come with a tripod collar?

A: There is no tripod collar designed to work with this lens.

Q: 6. Will this lens work with the built in focus stacking feature of the D850?

A: No, this is a manual focus lens and so FS will not function from the D850.

Q: 7. Will this work with Nikon D7500 crop senor

A: This lens would provide a 37.5mm equivalent focal length when using it on the Nikon D7500.

Q: 8. Has anyone attached extension tubes to this lens?

A: Yes, there are reports of extension tubes being used with this lens. One is here at B&H in one of the lens's reviews.

Q: 9. Where is this lens made in?

A: This item's country of origin is China.

Q: 10. Will this lens focus if used on a Sony AR3 via a Nikon F to Sony e mount adapter?

A: This is a manual focus lens only and will only manual focus regardless of the adapter.

[Full-Frame] I bought this lens to use it with my Nikon Z6. The lens is fascinating, it produces unbelievable pictures. I ordered and B&H as always delivered on the next day (B&H is the best in this business!!). I am an amateur photographer and I love macro but, regular macro was not enough and I wanted this lens so I can see the minimal details and guess what, it produces amazing images and really takes you to a different world. It may take a few until you get use to it but once you get it the lens works great. The best aperture is 5.6 and if you don't have great light you needs a speed-light (I think to produce great pics you need this anyways). Anyway, I would but this lens again anytime.
100% recommended if you are a big macro fan.

[5:1] I've been using the Sony 90mm macro for a couple years, paired with a Sony A7riii and have loved every minute with it. But I wanted something for super macro photos. So I paired the Laowa 25mm with a Wemacro rail (for stacking) and the results are astounding. The lens is ridiculously sharp from center to edge.

The lack of manual focus is off-putting, and no IBIS makes it impossible for me to use when not on a tripod or rail. But those are minor gripes in my situation.
If you love macro and can work around the challenge of this lens, I would highly recommend it!

[1.75 lb] This is a solid little lens that give super clear images. The ability to change enlargement is also great and the amount of detail this thing can focus in on is incredibly. I use it with a stackshot and Helicon focus to shoot microchips and the results are fantastic. My clients love the results. I also purchased the 100mm lens for when you want to shoot something a little bigger, since the 25mm can only go so far away from the subject.

[Manual Focus] I had really gone back and forth on whether this was a completely ridiculous purchase to make, but I finally pulled the trigger and I was NOT disappointed.

This is such a fun way to look at the world, from bugs to bubbles and textures—great content for video as well. It's small and lightweight so I'm happy to throw this in my bag on any trip.

[Canon EF] I bought this for high magnification shots of pinned insect specimens and it performs amazingly. With some extension tubes, I can get close enough to image the head of gnat-sized wasps in great detail. I typically do stack shots with 2.8 fstop though. I can't say if this would be great for most macro photographers that shoot live subjects.

[1.75 lb] I have only used this since the 25th but the results have been stunning. This will definitely expand my photography. The only negative is that the magnification ring is a little stiff. Otherwise, the lens has been outstanding.

[1.75 lb] Not sure what some of the other reviewers were doing, but this lens is amazing! This is not a macro that does portraits, it's an extreme macro for extreme close ups. Do lots of research before you buy, make sure it's what you need.

Zero issues with build or image quality, F8 seems to be the sweet spot for dof. My next purchase is going to be a macro rail, but handheld it's just as good. I can't wait for the world to stop ending so I can go crazy with this lens! I got it in the mail a day after a state of emergency was declared here lol, I'm running out of in house ideas.

I'd like to say thank you to B&H for even having this lens in stock. I tried to buy within Canada, but Henry's has it as a 3-4 WEEK wait specialty order with no returns accepted, I'd still be waiting for it if I got it in Canada.

Love the lens, love the service, all around great experience!

[1.75 lb] I bought this to re-photograph microfiche which I have in three image sizes. It works great. Important to make sure the lens is perpendicular to the microfiche so I use a bubble level to level a light table then level the back of the camera. I also set a 1 second shutter delay so vibrations are ended when it takes the photo. Using Live View on a Nikon D850 eliminates shutter wear and also I can zoom the preview to make sure it is in focus. Then i simply touch the screen to take the photo. F8 on the lens seems to work best; a compromise between diffraction effects and a depth of field that's only a fraction of a millimeter!
The lens is quite a bit heavier and sturdier than it looks and the tapered front makes it fairly easy to get down to fine details such as crystals or insects. Field flatness is excellent and I see no barrel distortion or pincushion distortion.
