The 58mm Circular Polarizer Filter for Photographyhelps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges and filters this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity and features an aluminum-alloy filter ring that can be rotated in order to adjust the intensity of the polarization effect. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes eight layers of anti-reflection coating. These coatings also offer greater protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters.

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.

Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.

Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.

Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.

2x filter factor reduces exposure by 1 stop.

Multicoated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections.

Aluminum-alloy filter ring for durability while remaining lightweight.

Filter ring can be rotated to adjust the intensity of the polarization effect.

58mm front filter threads allow for use with other filters.

Top knurling to provide a more textured grip when mounting or removing it from a lens.

Constructed from optical glass for clarity and color fidelity.

Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this filter work with the normal lens caps, or does it require a slip-on cap?

A: As the Hoya 77mm HD3 Circular Polarizer Filter has 77mm front filter threads, yes, you may use a standard snap-on 77mm lens cap on the front of the filter.

Q: 2. Is the Kase wolverine glass substrate the same as their other filters (Schott B270) except chemically strengthen?

A: we do not have this level of information. It is made of optical glass.

Q: 3. How thick is the frame?

A: The HD3 Cir/Pol filter is 5mm thick.

Q: 4. Is this a better polarizing filter than the B+W 77mm XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano Filter at half the price?

A: What you are paying for is quality. Hoya is one of the best companies making filters. With this one you getting all the best features Hoya can produce. The quality of the ring, the glass, the foils that make up the Polarizer, the works. The B+W, on the other hand is the finest they make in this size. Honestly, without comparing side by side, it is hard to make a determination. I suspect both will have outstanding performance and build quality and the in the long run, you will not lose with either.

Q: 5. Does this come with a magnetic lens cap?

A: No, it does not. Filers typically don't come with caps.

Q: 6. Is the base magnetic hollow ring included? Is the magnetic cap included?

A: Th Freewell 82mm Magnetic Quick-Swap Circular Polarizer Filter includes the magnetic cap.

Q: 7. I've purchased this but when I rotate it I see no difference in the image. I bought this to remove reflections from windows but they remain just as strong as when I don't have the filter on. Am I doing something wrong?

A: The light needs to be at least partially polarized for a polarizer like this to work. If you are looking straight at the window and trying to remove reflections from behind you will see the least effect. You can experiment by putting yourself and the reflection you want to remove at an angle to the glass and you should start seeing more of an effect. You should find it is quite sensitive to the angle of reflection.

Q: 8. Will the Wolverine Circular Polarizer work on a Kase Skyeye magnetic adapter?

A: No, Kase Skyeye Magnetic Adapter (82mm) are not compatible with kase wolverine magnetic filters series. The Kase Wolverine Magnetic Circular Polarizer Filter already comes with its magnetic ring. If you need a step up ring you will need Kase Magnetic Step-Up Ring for Wolverine Magnetic Filters.

Q: 9. Is it compatible with the fujifilm x30?

A: The FUJIFILM X-T30 will work with any circular polarizer. The issue is filter size for the lens you are using. The typical lens for the camera is the XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Lens and that takes a 58mm filter. Here is a good one for that lens. Hoya 58mm alpha Circular Polarizer Filter B&H # HOCPA58.

Q: 10. What is the thickness of the filter?

A: The Ice Slim Multicoated Circular Polarizer Filter (100 x 100mm) is 0.08" / 2 mm, thick.

[Aluminum] Ive not done any controlled resolution testing on these, nor felt I needed to , regarding the quality of the filters. They appear well machined and I anticipate will provide me good results and adequate protection for my lens.which is the main reason I use a UV filter. The polarizer does what its designed to do as well. Nothing negative to comment at this point. These accessories were offered as a bonus with my lens purchase.

[Glass] A very high quality magnetic mount polarizer with a magnetic lens cap. A great setup that I am now preferring over using the Sony clip on lens cap. This polarizer only removes unwanted glare and doesn't add any other unwanted image changes. Best used outdoors on sunny or partly cloudy days to remove glare and also add definition to clouds and also slightly darken the sky to add a bit more color and richness to blue skies. Highly recommend.

[Aluminum] I have various Freewell magnetic filters on 5 Canon and Sigma lenses. Great quality and superb optics!

[Aluminum] The filter works very well and due to the magnetic ring can be installed very easily. The ring even has a thread so you can use existing screw-on filter without having to remove the magnetic ring. I particularly like the magnetic lens cap. The magnets so far have been strong enough to hold everything in place.

[58 mm] I received these as part of a kit that BH included with a Nikon 70-200mm VR lens, Consequently I wasn't expecting much in terms of quality, but I have to say that the UV filter works great, no ghosting or flare, etc, which I have experienced with other budget brand filters. I would definitely buy another one.
