The NiSi 6.6x6.6" Natural-Night Cinema Filteris designed to reduce the appearance of light pollution in video or images that include the night sky and illumination from artificial light sources. This effect can be obtained when this filter is used on a film camera system with daylight film installed, or on a digital camera system with its daylight white balance setting selected.

Light pollution occurs in areas of the night sky that are above or near concentrated and intense sources of artificial light such as cities. These light sources can include exterior and interior lamps for commercial or residential buildings, brightly lit advertisements such as billboards, streetlamps, as well as sports and entertainment venues. Together, they can result in a type of light pollution known as skyglow, where individual stars, the Milky Way, and other astronomical features in the night sky are obscured. Additionally, artificial lights clustered together can become difficult to individually discern. Light pollution from these "cluttered" sources can become a source of distraction within an image and can resemble overexposed areas of glare.

When used, the NiSi 6.6 x 6.6" Natural-Night Cinema Filter can improve the results of nighttime images by blocking the yellow light from sodium-vapor lamps, mercury-vapor lamps, or low Color Rendering Index LED's, common light sources within urban areas. By preventing the dominant wavelengths of light associated with the color of those lamps from being recorded, the visibility of astronomical objects is enhanced, and where they appear, artificial light sources are more clearly defined with less glare and improved contrast.

This filter is compatible with filter holders that can accommodate 4mm-thick, 6.6 x 6.6" rectangular filters and is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity. Each glass surface includes one layer of nano coating. The nano coating associated with this filter results in an improved beading effect when in contact with water or oil for greater cleaning efficiency.

A leatherette pouch is included with this filter for storage and transport.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. does this filter pass 5577 angstroms? I wish to pass 5577 for auroral photography, but otherwise block Na 5890 & other street lamp emissions. Maybe i can get a transmission spectrum for this filter? Otherwise, can you recommend an ideal auroral/light pollution filter? thank you.

A: Unfortunately, for whatever reason NiSI does not list the angstroms for this filter. However, I would take their word that it is: Reduces Light Pollution in Night Sky, Blocks Yellow Sodium-Vapor Light, Blocks Yellow Mercury-Vapor Light, and Blocks Yellow Light from Low CRI LEDs. If it does not, they will lose customers.

Q: 9. is this filter necessary for nighttime videography? And is it worth buying this filter for video or you can do all of the color adjustments in post where you could remove the light pollution and grade to a natural night color?

A: If are shooting on locations at night with light pollution it is best to use a filter like the NiSi 67mm Natural Night Filter. editing in post will not be as good.

Q: 10. how do I know what to choose? 100x100 or 150mmx150 or 180x180mm? I don't have a holder yet either, so want to get everything to fit my 62mm ring lens and my 67mm lens ring

A: Hi--many filters will fit in a standard 100x100mm filter holder (probably the most common filter size); you need to choose among the filter holders (you will also need a compatible adapter ring for the lens you're using): https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q=filter%20holders&filters=fct_category%3Afilter_holders_3837%2Cfct_filter-system_2715%3A4in-100mm-wide-filters

[0.9 lb] The NiSi 72mm Natural Night Filter improves the night photography greatly. My night photos are now sharp, clean, and free of nasty light pollution. The colors are vibrant and the deep blue sky really shows in the background. You can not get these effects through post-processing, so this filter is necessary for taking high quality raw photos. The price is expensive and I was only able to afford it when the 72mm size filter was on sale during the DealZone special when the price was 60% off the regular price. I then bought several step-up rings so all my lens with filter size of 72mm or less can take advantage of this wonderful filter.

[Single Coated] Received in good condition. In my area of the Pacific Northwest it is difficult to get away from the glow of city lights on the horizon. This filter does an excellent job of minimizing the effect. I am very happy with the results.

[Single Coated] It's a great lens especially for areas with a bit of noise pollution. Greatly reduced the yellowish-green cast which I'm not a fan of and left nothing but blue gorgeous skies with brilliant stars.
