The 4-stop, 100 x 150mm H&Y K-Series Reverse-Graduated ND Filter 100x150mm 4-Stopfrom H&Y K-Series Reverse-Graduated ND Filter 100x150mm 4-Stopcan be used to darken bright skies, specifically during a sunrise or sunset, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image.

This filter achieves its effect with a 1.2 band of density above its center region that provides up to a 4-stop reduction in light from entering a lens. This band extends in both vertical directions which tapers to approximately a 0.6 density and a 2-stop reduction in light at the edge above it. Directly below the 1.2 band of density, it tapers to clear, with a soft-edged line of transition before the clear area.

The placement of a 1.2 band of density with a clear area directly below allows the 100 x 150mm K-Series Reverse-Graduated Neutral Density 1.2 Filter to match the positioning of the sun when it is at, or immediately above, the horizon. In such instances, the sun can appear closer to the center of an image as opposed to the upper edge, and an increase in brightness is created which is more prominent on both sides of the sun than above it. This pattern of brightness corresponds to the density pattern on the 100 x 150mm K-Series Reverse-Graduated Neutral Density 1.2 Filter. The soft-edged line of transition in this reverse-graduated neutral density filter is useful for images that do not have a strongly defined transition between the sky and the foreground, while the 4-stop to approximately 2-stop gradation is applicable to multiple regions of brightness within the sky.

The 100 x 150mm K-Series Reverse-Graduated Neutral Density 1.2 Filter is pre-installed with an H&Y K-Series Reverse-Graduated ND Filter 100x150mm 4-Stopfor use with an H&Y Filters 100mm K-Series Filter Holder. When combined with a 100mm K-Series Filter Holder that is configured with a pair of magnetic filter slots, filters each with a Quick Release Magnetic Filter Frame can be magnetically stacked in front of a camera lens instead of inserted only within a specific number of filter holder slots, allowing the user to determine the number of filters to be applied, all of which can be quickly installed, repositioned, or switched with a different filter needed for other subjects or changing lighting conditions.

While in use, front-facing center finder rulers on the side sections of this Quick Release Magnetic Filter Frame help enable precise positioning of the 100 x 150mm reverse-graduated neutral density filter, relative to another filter it is stacked on. This can further complement the use of the 100 x 150mm reverse-graduated neutral density filter whose effect can be adjusted to better suit changing lighting conditions or creative demands by moving it up or down. The Quick Release Magnetic Filter Frame also serves to reinforce the edges of the 100 x 150mm reverse-graduated neutral density filter, enhancing that filter's rigidity and promoting sharp results by helping to ensure that the filter remains flat. A filter pouch for storage and transport and a microfiber cleaning cloth for filter maintenance, are also provided.

  • Creates a neutral density pattern that matches the positioning of the sun when it is at, or immediately above the horizon
  • Density pattern corresponds to the brightness pattern of the sun when it appears at or is closer to the horizon as opposed to a higher angle, which creates an increase in brightness that is more prominent on both sides of the sun than above it
  • Soft-edged line of transition between the 4-stop band of density and the clear area below it is useful for images that do not have a strongly defined transition between the sky and the foreground
  • 4-stop to approximately a 2-stop gradation is applicable to multiple regions of brightness within the sky
  • Filter does not affect the overall coloration of the image
  • Each glass surface includes eight layers of anti-reflection coatings to prevent internal ghosting and reflections as well as an anti-smear, nano coating for an improved beading effect when in contact with water or oil for greater cleaning efficiency
  • Constructed from Gorilla glass for enhanced scratch-resistance

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I screw this along with a 77mm circular polarizer?

A: It depends on your polarizer. Some thin profile polarizers don't include threads to put more filters. In any case, this filter is already super dark, add a polarizer and it would be incredibly dark. The quality might also suffer, and with this filter it's not very good to begin with.

Q: 2. 77mm lens caps don't work. Can you advise a specific lens cap that will work with these filters?

A: The K&F Concept Nano-X Pro Series CPL+ND2-32 Filter (67mm, 1 to 5-Stop) has 86mm front filter threads. The Sensei 86mm Clip-On Lens Cap, B&H # SELCC86, is compatible.

Q: 3. Does this have a hard stop on it or does it rotate a full 360+?

A: The stops are indicated on the filter, however there is no pushback or hard stop as you rotate the ring.

Q: 4. The problem is that the Ice ND1000 filter does not come in 50mm size. So what do I do?

A: A stepdown ring is the easy and cheap answer. One end will screw into your 50mm lens & the other will be able to screw the filter into. If you have, or are considering buying other lens you should look at buying the filter for the biggest lens and step down rings for the your other lens - that way you only need one filter.

Q: 5. Can the orange lens handles be removed? Thanks

A: The orange handles of the K&F Concept Nano-X Pro Series CPL+ND2-32 Filter (77mm, 1 to 5-Stop) are not made to be easily removed, but they can be removed with a screw driver (purchased separately).

Q: 6. Does the orange tab is removable? im afraid it is going to bump my matte box

A: The orange tab on the K&F Concept Nano X-Pro HD Variable ND2-400 Filter (82mm) is not made to come off.

Q: 7. We know the rear filter threads, can we get an official filter thread sizes for the front?

A: The front filter thread on the K&F Concept Nano-X Pro Series CPL+ND2-32 Filter (77mm, 1 to 5-Stop) is also 77mm.

Q: 8. Is there a 6-9 stops VND filter ?

A: The 6-9 stop version of the Freewell True Color Variable ND 1-5 Stop Filter for Sherpa Series Cases would be the Freewell True Color Variable ND 6-9 Stop Filter for Sherpa Series Cases (BH #FRFWSHVND69).

Q: 9. What is the front filter thread size? For the purpose of buying a lens cap.

A: The K&F Concept Nano-X Pro Series CPL+ND2-32 Filter (67mm, 1 to 5-Stop) accepts 77mm lens caps.

Q: 10. Does this have front threads? So I could mount a lens hood? Or stack a filter?

A: No, the K&F Concept Nano X-Pro HD Variable ND2-400 Filter (62mm) does not have any front threads for mounting a filter or hood.

[0.4 lb] These Firecrest gradient filters are just so much better than resin versions. Crystal clear, no color cast, I just love them.

[0.4 lb] The Cokin NUANCES Extreme Z-Pro Series Soft-Edge Reverse-Graduated Neutral Density 1.2 to 0.9 Filter (4 to 3-Stop) is well made and should last for years. Easy to use filter system that will not fall off the lens. Color is good.

[Glass] This was the first time I have used a RVRS GRAD and like the results. In did a great job of allowing more light in the foreground area, Bring down the Sunset light , and bring the sky light from a white to the blue/gray. I did bring the filter up to high and was able to get that light blue look on the bottom of the clouds. As I use the filter more, I will try and update the review. See attached photos.

[Multi Coated] This filter is great. I use it with Nikon D850 and the images are awesome. I have used those plastic filters and was always scratching them. I have not drop it yet so I'm not sure how it will hold up on rocky terrain. I believe it will hold up on Sand or grass just fine. With higher mega pixels bodies you need to put good filters on your lenses or don't use one at all because it will show in your images.
