The Tiffen Series 9 CC40Y Yellow Filter for Photographyis a color compensating (or color correction) filter for use when making color balance adjustments. It can be used to alter the color balance of a scene by placing in front of a light source or the lens of your camera. It can also be used to apply color corrections when used in the darkroom with an enlarger or to help pre-visualize color adjustments when viewing prints.

Yellow is the opposite of blue and can be used to reduce blue tones or casts within a scene or print. This yellow CC40 is more dense than a CC30 filter and less dense than a CC50 filter, and requires a 0.3 stop compensation for normal exposure results.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology; a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounting to precision metal rings. This filter is compatible with Series 9 filter holders.

Q: 8. Using flash outdoors (flash dialled 1 stop brighter than sun), id like to reduce the blue saturation of the ambient daylight (in a colour image, not B&W) will this filter reduce/mute/gray the blue saturation? If anyone has tried this, can you please direct me to an example image? Thanks everyone!

A: Colored filters are usually meant to be used to change the contrast in black and white photography. If you were to use a yellow filter while shooting color, the whole picture will have a yellow cast. The best way to reduce the blue saturation would be to either overexpose the sky, or ideally in post production you can under-saturate the blues.

[Aluminum] I use this when shooting color infrared film. I also use a #25 red filter and an orange filter. The yellow one gives me the typical blue/red/white hues of color infrared, the orange filter turns more to the magentas, whereas the red filter turns things towards the green hues.

[Aluminum] Converting color digital captures just does not lend itself to thinking in B&W while shooting. With the #12 minus blue filter, I can shoot as I used to do with film. Using SilverEfex or Exposure, I then convert the color digital capture directly into a B&W photo.
