With an exceptional field of view and long eye relief, the Baader Hyperion 31mm 72° Eyepiece 1.25"/2" Asphericproduces relatively low magnifications on most telescopes, making it ideal for detailed lunar and planetary viewing or wide-field deep sky observations, plus astrophotography. Its 72° field of view offers a viewing angle that is wider than the human eye, but not so wide that contrast and image brightness are compromised.

The eyepiece lens is made with a unique 6-element/4-group aspheric configuration to virtually eliminate spherical aberration, astigmatism, "kidney beaning," and other optical distortions. Phantom Coating Group multi-coatings, blackened lens edges, and internal baffling deliver bright and high-contrast views that are free of scattered and diffracted light. It comes with two barrel sleeves that allow it to fit into 1.25" and 2" drawtubes and accessories. When using the 1.25" barrel, the field of view is reduced to 55 degrees. To limit distraction and improve brightness and contrast, a winged eyecup is included that can fold down for those who require eyeglasses during viewing. To perform all types of astrophotography, including afocal and projection, two sets of T-mount threads are provided—43mm and 54mm—that accept standard camera-specific T-rings to directly attach CCD imaging cameras or DSLRs.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this bayonet mount compatible with any of M, R or L mount?

A: No. It's only for the eyepiece. You would use the B&H # LEDOLENS35MM (Leica's # 42308) 35mm digiscoping objective lens adapter over the 25-50x eyepiece that's attached to the Televid spotting scope and add the appropriate T2 mount onto the back of the Leica # 42308 to connect your camera to it.

Q: 2. With the Barlow attached, this effectively goes between 3.5mm - 10mm, right?

A: With a 2X barlow correct

Q: 3. What is the outer housing diameter of this piece?? I need it to fit inside the 1.25" Orion Variable Universal Camera Adapter. So this eyepiece needs to have an outside diameter of less than 38.3mm.

A: The outer housing diameter of this eyepiece is listed at 101.5 mm so it would not fit.

Q: 4. Do these filters come with a case?

A: Each filter comes in a plastic case

Q: 5. Can I use the T-mount adapter shown in "Recimmended Accessories" to shoot through this eyepiece with my D-SLR? I already have one, and a Nikon F-mount adapter. Can I just screw it to the threads on the viewing end of the eyepiece, then attach my D-SLR via my Nikon adapter, or do I need to get a special connector?

A: You need this adapter to attach a T mount adapter, Alpine Astronomical Baader Hyperion M43/T-2 T-Adapter BH #ALHTA43T2 • MFR #HTA43/T2 https://bhpho.to/30q8Ltq

Q: 6. Will this work with the apo televid 77 straight body scope?

A: NO, this eyepiece couples to the newer model Leica Televid 82 only... It will NOT couple to the older model Leica Televid 77, straight OR angled.

Q: 7. Is this eyepiece waterproof?

A: The Alpine Astronomical Baader Hyperion 8-24mm Mark IV Zoom Eyepiece (1.25"/2") BH #ALHYPZOOM • MFR #HYP-ZOOM is not waterproof.

Q: 8. Can I use the Baader 76 degree Morpheus 4.5 mm eyepiece in the Celestron Regal M2 100ED spotting scope I have ordered from B&H?

A: It probably wont work properly because its too magnified. The Spotting scope is too short a focal length, I would recommend a 12 mm & higher.

Q: 9. I have a Fuji X-Pro3 and T-Adaptor (for Fuji). Do I need this B&H #ALHTA43T2 in order to connect to the Mark 4 zoom?

A: That is correct, the B&H #ALHTA43T2 adapter is necessary to attach to T Mounts.

Q: 10. This zoom eyepiece is 3 times the price of Celestron's zoom. Is it worth that difference in cost?

A: It has much higher optical quality due to the -Phantom Coating Group Multi-Coatings and 7-Element/4-Group Flat-Field Lens Design

[31mm] The 24mm hyperion works very well with my f6.5 achromatic telescope. Its 68 degree FOV translates to 2.4 degree true field of view on that scope, a definite step up from the eyepieces that came with the scope from Celestron. Very little chromatic aberation noticed even looking at the bright moon. The slight green halo at the top edge of the full moon was only noticed when I remembered to look for it - not a problem for me as a visual observer. Jupiter gave good views, only a little soft at the very edge of the field. The only problem I experienced is that it's on the heavy side. I can't achieve balance on my mount the way it's set up.

[1.25", 2"] I have a Celestron Astro Fi 130 telescope. It came with 10mm and 25mm lenses. The 10mm field of view is so narrow that finding objects was often very difficult, even when I used the lower magnification 25mm lens to center the object.
This Alpin Astronomical Baader lens has a wider field of view than the 25 mm lens my telescope came with. When I realized that, I stopped using the 25mm lens to align my mount.

The rubberized grip is nice. This is a large lens. It weighs significantly more than the factory lenses.

I have also used this lens with a 2x barlow lens. I was able to see rings on Saturn and even some hints of banding on Jupiter. Not bad for a 130mm aperture. The wide field of view meant I could point to those planets without aligning my telescope (because they were setting and I didn't have enough visible stars or time to align) and family members had enough time to take turns viewing the planets without having the objects drift out of view.

This was one of the most expensive accessories I purchased for my telescope, but it has enhanced my enjoyment significantly.

[1.25", 2"] This wide angle low power eyepiece provides a clear view with stars appearing as pin points to the edge of the field. A real valuable tool in your eyepiece collection.

[1.035 lb] This eyepiece is absolutely perfect. It has plenty of eye relief, and a good field of view. Optically your view is real clear and crisp. I was so impressed by the performance of this eyepiece that I bought more of them in different magnifications so I could cover all aspects of enjoying the night sky. A great price range for this level of performance. In short, these are a must have!

[17.0 mm] Bought this with the 14mm and 28mm fine tuning rings (ftr) that are sold separately. The 1.25 nosepiece has a Barlow lens because if you take off the 1.25 and put it in a 2 diagonal it is 22.9mm still with the 68 afov.
With the 14 & 28mm ftr together it is 8.1mm focal length. So with one eyepiece I can get 13mm,10.8mm, 9.2mm, 8.1mm and basically 23mm focal lengths all in one eyepiece. I mainly use the 13mm and 23mm and save the 8mm for closeup views of small globular clusters and other DSOs.
It has an excellent flat field view to the edges and especially considering the price it is as good or near as good as EPs that cost three times as much. Baader hit it out of the ballpark with this one.
