With a wide angle of view and generous eye relief, the Baader Hyperion 68° 5mm Eyepiece (1.25"/2")delivers the performance that avid amateur astronomers demand for viewing and imaging. Engineered with an 8-element/5-group lens design, the eyepiece features Baader's proprietary 7-layer broadband multi-coatings to maximize light transmission across the entire visual spectrum with true color rendition and without the green tint and halos common in many astronomical eyepieces.

Baader made this eyepiece with a unique modular design that allows it to fit into standard 1.25" holders and accessories with the ability to remove the primary snout and have it fit into larger 2" holders. Since one of the lens groups is in the 1.25" snout, when it is removed it changes the focal length without changing the brightness or long 20mm eye relief. The focal length can also be changed through the use of compatible filters—allowing you to customize the magnification yield based on your optical tube assembly and need.

The eyepiece comes with a fold-down rubber eyecup for use with or without eyewear, and the eyecup can be completely removed to reveal a set of two threads. These M43 and M54 threads allow T-rings and other adapters to be mounted for direct connection of imaging systems for afocal and projection astrophotography techniques. This model is parfocal with all other Hyperion eyepieces except the 24mm version, which means there is little to no need to refocus when changing eyepieces within the Hyperion line.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. This zoom eyepiece is 3 times the price of Celestron's zoom. Is it worth that difference in cost?

A: It has much higher optical quality due to the -Phantom Coating Group Multi-Coatings and 7-Element/4-Group Flat-Field Lens Design

Q: 2. How do you fit this eyepiece to the diagonal that comes standard with Celestron Nexstar 8SE?

A: It fits the Celestron 8se directly as long as you are not using the 2" Schmidt-Cassegrain Adapter.

Q: 3. what does focal length of 21mm eyepiece become when the snout is removed?

A: The Alpine Astronomical Baader Hyperion 68° 21mm Astronomical Eyepiece (1.25"/2") would become 32.2mm with the snout removed.

Q: 4. HOW THIS EYEPIECE'S QUALITY COMPAIR TO THE 24 MM PANOPTIC EYEPIECE ?

A: The Panoptic is slightly better... it's nowhere near 2x better, which is usually the price difference. I tested out quite a few televue vs ES eyepieces in 68, 82, and 100 degrees and have always found the ES to be the best bang for the buck by a pretty noticeable margin.

Q: 5. Is this eyepiece barrel 1.25/2" or only 1.25" ?

A: The Alpine Astronomical Baader Hyperion 68° 10mm Astronomical Eyepiece (1.25"/2"), will work both with 1.25" and 2" holders." (We can see in the Overview it is explained-This eyepiece with a unique modular design that allows it to fit into standard 1.25" holders and accessories with the ability to remove the primary snout and have it fit into larger 2" holders as well.)

Q: 6. Is it advisable to use a barlow lense with Televue eyepieces?

A: This is a fairly high powered Eyepiece. I would only go with a Barlow if you had a Scope with a large Objective around 8", and up.

Q: 7. Would this lens Will this EP work effectively in a f/10 C5 scope?

A: Yes this Eyepiece would work with that Scope.

Q: 8. It says you can remove the smaller nosepiece to use the 2" barrel. But it changes the focal length. To what?

A: This is the only information being offered by Alpine Astronomical https://alpineastro.com/products/baader-13mm-hyperion-68-modular-eyepiece#description

Q: 9. I have this unit purchased, but it is on back order. Now I am looking at filters to go with it. Do filters need to be 1.25" or 2" in diameter to work in combination with this eyepiece?

A: You may use both 1.25" filters and 2" filters with the Alpine Astronomical Baader Hyperion 8-24mm Mark IV Zoom Eyepiece (1.25"/2"). According to the manufacturer, the Alpine Astronomical Baader Hyperion 8-24mm Mark IV Zoom Eyepiece (1.25"/2") includes both 1.25" and 2" barrels. The 1¼" Barrel is threaded for standard 1¼" filters, and the 2" Barrel for standard 2" filters.

Q: 10. will this work with a Nexstar 130 SLT?

A: Yes, it will

[5.9 mm] Bought this with the 14mm and 28mm fine tuning rings (ftr) that are sold separately. The 1.25 nosepiece has a Barlow lens because if you take off the 1.25 and put it in a 2 diagonal it is 22.9mm still with the 68 afov.
With the 14 & 28mm ftr together it is 8.1mm focal length. So with one eyepiece I can get 13mm,10.8mm, 9.2mm, 8.1mm and basically 23mm focal lengths all in one eyepiece. I mainly use the 13mm and 23mm and save the 8mm for closeup views of small globular clusters and other DSOs.
It has an excellent flat field view to the edges and especially considering the price it is as good or near as good as EPs that cost three times as much. Baader hit it out of the ballpark with this one.

[1.03 lb] This wide angle low power eyepiece provides a clear view with stars appearing as pin points to the edge of the field. A real valuable tool in your eyepiece collection.

[20.0 mm] I am new to high-end telescopes and accessories. I bought this with my Celestron Evolution 8 and love it. I have zero complaints. Makes for fantastic views of everything I have looked at and is so convenient.

I do wish I had bought it with the matching 2.25 barlow.

[68°] This eyepiece is absolutely perfect. It has plenty of eye relief, and a good field of view. Optically your view is real clear and crisp. I was so impressed by the performance of this eyepiece that I bought more of them in different magnifications so I could cover all aspects of enjoying the night sky. A great price range for this level of performance. In short, these are a must have!

[1.03 lb] The 24mm hyperion works very well with my f6.5 achromatic telescope. Its 68 degree FOV translates to 2.4 degree true field of view on that scope, a definite step up from the eyepieces that came with the scope from Celestron. Very little chromatic aberation noticed even looking at the bright moon. The slight green halo at the top edge of the full moon was only noticed when I remembered to look for it - not a problem for me as a visual observer. Jupiter gave good views, only a little soft at the very edge of the field. The only problem I experienced is that it's on the heavy side. I can't achieve balance on my mount the way it's set up.

[1.03 lb] This is a great eyepiece. Not having to switch eyepieces with very slight refocusing if any can be called no less than perfect. I'm loving it!

[5mm] I have a Celestron Astro Fi 130 telescope. It came with 10mm and 25mm lenses. The 10mm field of view is so narrow that finding objects was often very difficult, even when I used the lower magnification 25mm lens to center the object.
This Alpin Astronomical Baader lens has a wider field of view than the 25 mm lens my telescope came with. When I realized that, I stopped using the 25mm lens to align my mount.

The rubberized grip is nice. This is a large lens. It weighs significantly more than the factory lenses.

I have also used this lens with a 2x barlow lens. I was able to see rings on Saturn and even some hints of banding on Jupiter. Not bad for a 130mm aperture. The wide field of view meant I could point to those planets without aligning my telescope (because they were setting and I didn't have enough visible stars or time to align) and family members had enough time to take turns viewing the planets without having the objects drift out of view.

This was one of the most expensive accessories I purchased for my telescope, but it has enhanced my enjoyment significantly.
